OM SYSTEM OM-3 vs OM-5

The OM SYSTEM OM-3, launched in February 2025, is a Micro 4/3 hybrid camera that retains most of the features of the OM-1 Mark II while offering a more compact, streamlined camera. The 20.4 MP BSI Live MOS stacked sensor, TruePic X processor, 5-axis image stabilisation up to 6.5 stops and ultra-fast 120 fps electronic burst mode are all present. The steerable touchscreen is identical to that of its big brother, as is the BLX-1 battery, which guarantees a comfortable autonomy (the OM-3's autonomy is said to be better, with 590 shots). The main change is to the ergonomics: the body is smaller and lighter (496g), but the grip and autofocus joystick are gone, which may surprise some users used to a more pronounced grip.

In addition to these changes, the OM-3 offers some minor new features, particularly for videographers. The introduction of the OM Cinema profiles (Cine 1 and Cine 2) enriches the colour reproduction options, complementing the classic OM-Log400 and HLG. On the video side, the camera retains excellent recording quality up to C4K 60p, but is limited to a single SD UHS-II slot, a choice that may frustrate those who film or shoot in bursts (the buffer is also very weak, with only 85 RAW). On the other hand, those who prefer lightness and intuitiveness will appreciate the direct access to four customisable colour profiles, inspired by the famous PEN-F, for image rendering that can be adjusted on the fly.

Aimed at urban and travel photography enthusiasts, the OM-3 has a cool retro look, a 2.36 megapixel OLED viewfinder (less defined than the OM-1 Mark II) and a grip designed for responsiveness. While the mechanical burst rate is limited to 6 frames per second, the camera retains an IP53 tropicalisation, ideal for coping with harsh conditions. All in all, the OM SYSTEM OM-3 is a well-balanced hybrid designed for those looking for a high-performance, discreet and inspiring camera. However, its starting price seems a little high for what it has to offer.

Available in October 2022, the OM-5 is lightweight and versatile thanks to its stabilised and tropicalised 20.4 MP Micro 4/3 sensor. Its compact size and featherweight of just 414g make it easy to carry. Its TruePic IX processor is efficient for everyday use, even if it doesn't have the power of the latest OM-1/OM-1 II. What's more, the sensitivity range (ISO 200 to 25,600) offers a degree of flexibility for capturing a variety of scenes, while the camera only has one SD UHS-II slot.

As well as its compact size, the OM-5 also offers a refreshing burst mode with an electronic shutter speed of up to 30 fps, ideal for capturing fast-moving action. On the other hand, there are some limitations compared to the OM-1, notably an OLED viewfinder with 'only' 2.36 million dots and a touchscreen with 1.03 million dots. The autofocus is also decent, but not as good as on higher-end models. Fortunately, the built-in stabiliser works well in low light.

Designed for those who like to travel light, the OM-5 is equally at home shooting 4K videos at up to 30 fps. Battery life is average, at 310 shots with the BLS-50 battery, and we recommend an extra battery for longer shooting sessions. All in all, this camera wins us over with its price, now under €1,000, its ultra-compact size and its tropicalised construction. We see it as an excellent compromise for beginners or advanced Micro 4/3 users, without sacrificing image quality or handling.
