Laos is a Southeast Asian country that is wrongly way less travelled than its neighbours Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia. Nevertheless, the country is still very authentic and you will definitely have the opportunity to discover areas off the beaten track! Take advantage of your trip there to swim in the Mekong River and eat sticky rice! Visiting Laos remains a unique experience in Southeast Asia !
Visit Laos
- The temples of Angkor, Phnom Penh and Khmer history in Cambodia,
- Hanoi, Saigon, Halong Bay, rice fields and waterfalls in Vietnam,
- Bangkok or Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai in Thailand,
- The temples of Bagan in Burma (Myanmar).
Laos is still fairly unspoilt from the masses of tourists. Many backpackers decide to come and visit Laos. During my trip to Asia in the country, I had the opportunity to explore the country’s must-see sites: Vang Vieng (famous for its karst landscapes), Vientiane (capital of Laos), Pak Ou, Luang Prabang (famous for its night market, temples, stupa and pagoda of all kinds), the waterfalls of Tat Si Kuang (which can be discovered by a trip in Tuk tuk), the 4000 islands, the mountainous region of North Laos and its lush vegetation, the Mekong by boat, the visit of the Golden Triangle, or the plain of the jars.
I stayed a whole month in Laos and I must admit that I would have liked to stay longer. I remember leaving Laos by the North Vietnam, on the border that leads to the city of Dien Bien Phu, a Vietnamese city famous for the fall of the French during the Indochina war. I wish I could have stayed longer in its remote areas, discovered these small villages, slept in small guesthouses or stayed with the locals. The visa was too short for me. Maybe this will be an opportunity for me to go back on a family trip, who knows?
I especially remember the kindness of the Laotians. For those planning a trip to Thailand or a trip to Cambodia, you should seriously consider visiting Laos, which is still a highlight of my trip to South-East Asia.
