Choose the best cheap flight comparator!
Are you looking for the best cheap flight comparator for your next vacation or trip? Do you want to know the prices of the cheapest airline tickets? Looking for a plane ticket to fly to the Canaries? Peru? The Balearic Islands? Do you want to travel cheaper? This is obviously one of the most important steps for us travelers: finding a cheap ticket to our destination. In this article, I explain everything you need to book a flight with low-cost airlines. The objective is to compare prices via flight comparison websites.
One thing to know too: there is always a best time to book your flight and low-cost flight. Some rather do it a few months before the trip (as recommended), others only a few weeks before, or even at the last moment.
Are you looking for cheap flights and good deals around the world to travel cheap? You should take a look at the links below. I use them daily in my travel planning to book my flights, my rental cars, or to save on my online purchases! Good plans, for sure!
The best flight comparators: what you need to know!
A few points to clarify:
- The best flight comparison sites are in fact the real flight comparison sites! What? Let me explain… I already talked about it in an article explaining how to find cheaper flight tickets. Whether you are looking for direct flights between Paris and London or a long-haul flight from Paris to New York, the principle remains the same.
Indeed, a large majority of people look for their plane tickets on sites like Opodo, Go Voyages, Edreams, etc., which is a mistake! Let’s be clear… these are not flight comparison sites! In reality, most of them are travel agencies or tour operators…
Indeed, these sites actually belong to online travel agencies, travel sites or airline groups (e.g. Opodo, Bourse des vols, Ebookers) and therefore do not allow you to find the cheapest flight…
The best thing for you to do is to focus on comparison sites that are not affiliated with any travel agency, airline, etc. To put it simply: a comparison site does not sell anything, it only compares, as the name suggests!
You don’t believe me? You think I’m making it up? Well, I’ll give you the proof by A+B. Go to the comparison sites (the real ones) and do a search. You will quickly see that the flight comparator will actually search through the sites you thought were comparators. The proof is in the pictures.

Here is where Skyscanner searches, for example.
You can see that, for example, Skyscanner compares prices from Opodo, Go voyage, Bravofly, ect., the same ones that you first thought were flight comparators!
- To buy cheaper tickets, don’t hesitate to compare prices on different flight comparison websites. Prices sometimes vary and it is always interesting to see. This way, you will have a possibility to find the best flight comparator for your destination.
- Finally, don’t hesitate to check the price directly on the airline’s website, even if you think you have found the best price on a flight comparison website. Flights prices are sometimes cheaper.
- To find a cheap trip, make sure that the comparator you use takes into account as many low-cost airlines as possible. After all, they often offer the cheapest flights at very interesting rates (e.g. Ryanair, Easyjet, XL airways, Transavia, Vueling, etc.). Not all comparators are equal on this point!
- Finally, when you want to book a cheap flight, the flight comparators will redirect you in all cases to travel agencies or airlines (such as Opodo, Go Voyage, Edreams etc.). No need to complain to the comparator when you see that the airfare have changed, or if there are additional fees charged by the travel agency in question. The comparator only looks for the price of the flight! The travel agency/tour operator will then apply its rates for payment fees, insurance, etc. It goes the same way for all the flight comparators. It’s then up to you to see which travel agency will charge you the least amount of extra fees…
- Finally, beware of things we don’t see!? A small example: several travel agencies (Opodo, Edreams, Go Voyage) and comparators (Liligo) actually belong to the same Spanish group “Edreams Odigeo“. So, when you search on Liligo, you think you are looking for available prices on the whole market, while in reality, the comparator is looking for flights in its own companies. A bit of a mixed impression about this kind of false search…

Which one is the best cheap flight comparator?
I’m not sure if there is a perfect answer to this question, but in any case, I’ll give you a list of the best cheap flight comparison sites. Whether you are looking for flights to Bangkok, Lisbon or Palma de Mallorca, searching for cheap international flights is a must-do.
I’m thinking about it, but I think I’ll present you each of the comparators along with their associated features in detail, in dedicated articles. Sounds interesting?
So here is a (non-exhaustive) list of my favorite cheap flight comparators. I quickly present the advantages and disadvantages of each one (in my opinion)! If you are looking for flights, you can use these ones.
Skyscanner
This is my current favorite comparator and the one I use the most without a doubt! You can compare prices on different airlines, both regular (Air France, Luftansa, Corsair) and low-cost airlines. For me, it’s the perfect tool to search for last minute flights and to go on vacations. I gave my complete opinion on Skyscanner in a blog post!
Easy to use thanks to its fluid interface, possibility to search by month/cheapest month, by city or by country, multi-destination flight, results in several forms (graph, calendar), nearby airports, map showing all the prices from a given destination, a large number of low-cost flights, everywhere function (allows you to search for a destination when you don’t know where to go), and finally, the most important in most cases: the cheapest prices. Possibility to combine several one-way flights in multi-destination mode.
No possibility to display your payment method when searching for flights. Beware of surprises when you are redirected to travel agencies to purchase the ticket.
Another point that Skyscanner does not offer (and it’s a shame) is the possibility to search for a flight ticket to a predefined continent. For example, it is impossible to search for a cheap flight to Europe and see the results of the best priced tickets. This is very useful when you don’t know where to go.
If you already have an idea for a trip or a vacation soon, don’t hesitate to come and have a look here!
Jetcost
Very well-known comparator, especially in Europe and in France, its interface is a little too simplistic for my taste. It lacks some essential features to compare flights. However, the rates are often very interesting and very close to those offered by Skyscanner. So, don’t hesitate to compare!

Easy to use, comparison with a very large number of agencies and tour operators, possibility to display your payment method, very interesting prices!
No possibility to search by country, obligation to set precise travel dates, no possibility to search by month or by period (only a +/- 3 days possibility exists on the second page), no map to visualize the cheap destinations of the moment, no graphic visualization of prices over a period.
Momondo
This is a “new comparator” that few people actually know about, even if it’s becoming more and more popular now. The site is very sober with a simple design. It seems very easy to access from the start. On the price side, it’s also very interesting, so you can compare it with other flight comparators. Whether you are looking for a flight ticket to Thailand, Cuba or Bali, this is a comparator to consider when booking a ticket.

The “Take me anywhere” option that allows you to search for a random destination, the sober design, the very powerful Tripfinder function to search for flights without date, without destination and with a fixed budget, the inspiration section that allows you to see travel ideas, or the possibility to search from nearby airports!
No possibility at the beginning to search by month (obligation to fix dates), impossible to search a trip by country (like Skyscanner does, for example), ticket prices over a month only on the 2nd page (after having searched for fixed dates).
Kayak
Very well-known comparator among travelers. It has very good advantages and very interesting prices.

Possibility to search for a destination from several airports, the extremely powerful Explore function which allows to display on a map the possible destinations and the associated prices for a defined airport, month or season (e.g.: Christmas vacations) and a fixed budget. The “worldwide” function allows you to search for tickets throughout the world. Here you can display the means of payment (allowing you to see the fees charged by travel agencies).
Impossible to search from country to country (obligation to set airports at the start), no possibility to set a whole month for a destination or the cheapest month for example, no graphical display of price results, limited only to +/- 3 days for travel searches.
Liligo
Comparator mainly known in France and in Europe.

Prices seems to be interesting (to be checked in more detail), known to compare on a very large number of low-cost airlines, a function “where to go” allowing you to find a destination from a city, a fixed month and budget.
No possibility to set a country of departure, departure/arrival dates by month, neither +/- 3 days, no graphical display of the results, no possibility to see prices for the whole month after the search (only a possibility to see +/- 3 days after the first search).
Hipmunk
New comparator, not yet well known, but we do hear a little about it. Try it and compare it with the most famous ones!

Clean and simple design, original display on a “Timeline” of the prices of the searched destinations (only on one day).
Does not exist in French, impossible to search for the departure or arrival of a whole country, only the possibility to look +/- 3 days at the departure (not very practical system of sliding dates), no possibility to visualize the destinations on a map with a budget and a fixed month, no possibility to search by the cheapest month nor random destinations.
Easyvoyage
Older flight comparison service that has been around for a long time.

Travel comparator that allows you to display the means of payment right from the start (no surprise at the arrival with a more expensive flight…).
Design a bit old-fashioned (for my taste), no possibility to search by country (arrival or departure) or random destination, flexibility system on the 2nd page not very efficient, no map to visualize by destination, no graphical display of prices over several days or months.
I voluntarily wished to update this article since I first wrote it. Indeed, it is still possible to find the best offers, great deals, in short to book your flight without ruining yourself on other less-known comparators. No matter if you are planning a trip from Paris to Marrakech, to the Caribbean or Istanbul, there are always possibilities. I’ll tell you below about some of the comparators I’ve been able to test quickly, and what I think of them!
As you can see in the comments, several people have indeed pointed out that you can find a plane ticket by another way than the classic flight comparators: the transport comparators! Indeed, the search for tickets can sometimes be quite difficult and I think it’s a good idea to be able to compare with other means of transport to book your ticket! Among the websites that came back quite often: Combigo, From AtoZ, Combitrip or Zefly.
It is not necessarily adapted to everyone, but it is a very interesting way to vary your research…
Here is a quick overview of the best cheap flight comparators. Not all of them are present, but the main ones are. So, for your next trip, which one will you use to find the best prices? Which one do you think is the best cheap flight comparison site? Do you think you can book a plane ticket online for as little cost as possible?
If I had to give my personal ranking on the best airfare comparison website, I would say:
- Skyscanner
- Kayak
- Momondo
In any case, before buying your ticket, come and have a look at my article describing the best tips (in addition to using a comparator) to find cheap plane tickets and save money!
I’ll see you soon for new articles, and in particular a comparative test of several flights: round trip, one-way, multi-destination, etc.
See you soon and have a good trip,
Sylvain
