Sony A7 III vs FX3

The Sony Alpha 7 III, released in February 2018, is a 24.2-megapixel full-format mirrorless camera. In selecting this model for my switch to mirrorless cameras, I chose it as a benchmark due to its exceptional image quality in both photo and video. The camera features a back-illuminated sensor and BIONZ X processor, enabling 4K UHD recording at 30 fps (with slight cropping) and Full HD recording at 120 fps. The ISO sensitivity extends to 51,200, extendable to 204,800, offering outstanding low-light performance.

The Alpha 7 III features integrated 5-axis stabilization, protection against the effects of temperature and humidity, and an enhanced battery life, thanks to the NP-FZ100 battery. It also offers two SD card slots (one UHS-II and one UHS-I) and full connectivity, including a USB-C port. The camera's 10 fps burst rate and buffer capacity of up to 40 RAW images or 177 JPEG images ensures optimal responsiveness. The camera features a 693-point hybrid autofocus system that covers 93% of the sensor, along with an Eye-AF function for precise eye tracking, ideal for portrait photography. Furthermore, the silent burst shutter allows for discreet and efficient photography.

Designed for intermediate and expert photographers, this camera offers excellent ergonomics, with a 2.36 million-dot OLED viewfinder and tilting touchscreen. Although now superseded by the more recent and more expensive Alpha 7 IV, the a7 III remains a sound investment with unbeatable value for money. Overall, the Sony Alpha 7 III continues to be a popular choice due to its versatile performance and durability.

Available in March 2021, the Sony FX3 is a dedicated video camera that brings together Sony's Cinema and Alpha lines. With its 12.1 MP full frame sensor and BIONZ XR processor, it offers outstanding performance while remaining compact and lightweight (715g). Designed for discerning videographers, it offers advanced features such as 4K UHD recording at 120fps and 1080p recording at 240fps for smooth shooting and superb slow-motion capture.

The FX3 incorporates cutting-edge technology, including fast hybrid autofocus using AI-based algorithms to ensure precise tracking of moving subjects. The body also incorporates an image stabilisation system and offers the ability to adjust user LUTs for greater flexibility in post-production. Dual memory card slots accept one SD UHS-II card and one CFexpress type A card for efficient file management (including backup).
