The Sony Alpha A7R V, which came out in October 2022, is a big step up from its predecessor, the A7R IV. It remains a compact, weather-sealed full-frame mirrorless camera, built around the Sony FE mount with access to a wide range of lenses, a 3.68 M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and the NP-FZ100 battery, which continues to deliver very solid performance. Overall ergonomics also remain very similar, with a secure grip, well-placed controls, dual card slots (CFexpress Type A / SD UHS-II + SD UHS-II), and comprehensive connectivity including HDMI Type A as well as microphone and headphone jacks. At this stage, the A7 V clearly positions itself as a direct continuation of the Sony A7 IV, with no major changes for existing users.

The real evolution focuses on what many had been waiting for since 2021: speed and responsiveness. The sensor keeps its 33 MP resolution but now adopts a much faster semi-stacked architecture, paired with the new Bionz XR2 processor featuring AI-based functions. This combination changes the experience in the field: burst shooting now reaches 30 i/s in electronic shutter mode with AF tracking, rolling shutter is far better controlled, and image stabilization improves to a claimed 7.5 stops. Autofocus also gains in reliability and versatility thanks to enhanced recognition of humans, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles, with particularly strong subject tracking in action.

It is precisely this ability to bridge versatility and performance that makes the Sony A7 V appealing. It introduces features previously reserved for more advanced models—pre-capture, burst “boost,” a 4-axis articulating screen, Wi-Fi 6, and AI upscaling up to 130 MP—while maintaining an accessible and coherent philosophy. In video, Sony now offers 4K 120p, but with a heavy Super 35 crop of around 1.5x, making it competent yet somewhat limited for certain videographers. Ultimately, the A7 V does not reinvent the series, but it delivers a better camera overall, with meaningful improvements across the board.
