Sony FE lenses for full-frame cameras: the complete list

This page brings together all the lenses designed for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, in other words, lenses for the brand’s FE mount. You will find every Sony lens here, along with a large selection of third-party models compatible with Sony full-frame cameras. In October 2013, Sony introduced its first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the α7 and α7R, both of which have since been discontinued. Since then, the brand has continued to release new full-frame models. Here they are in order of release:

Many of these camera bodies are still available from Sony or through retailers. We take a closer look at the main models in a complete article dedicated to Sony mirrorless cameras, covering the essential specifications of the latest cameras in detail.

Of course, nothing prevents you from using Sony FE lenses on one of the brand’s APS-C cameras, such as the α6600. However, Sony also produces lenses designed specifically for Sony APS-C cameras, identified by the “E” designation. These lenses are generally lighter, more compact and less expensive.

Remember to take the 1.5x crop factor into account. For example, mounting the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 on an APS-C camera provides the same field of view as a 75mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Sony’s range of full-frame FE lenses is now highly comprehensive and considerably broader than its APS-C lens selection. I have divided the lenses into the following focal length categories:

1. Wide-angle (WA) and ultra-wide-angle (UWA) lenses: focal lengths below 20mm (UWA) and from 20mm to 35mm (WA),
2. Standard focal lengths: focal lengths from 35mm to 75mm,
3. Telephoto lenses: focal lengths above 75mm,
4. Macro lenses: designed for macro photography. Sony currently offers two native models

If you enjoy landscape or architectural photography and need a very wide field of view, Sony offers several ultra-wide-angle zooms and prime lenses. Bear in mind that the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 GM and Sony 12-24mm f/4 G do not accept standard screw-in filters. You will need a dedicated filter-holder system. Sony offers a broad selection of telephoto lenses for photographers who need longer focal lengths, whether for close-up portraits, isolating distant details, wildlife or sports photography. We have covered all the main options in our guide to choosing a Sony telephoto lens.

As far as I know, Sony currently offers only two native lenses designed specifically for macro photography, both listed in the table below. Anyone interested in macro work should also consider third-party manufacturers. Sigma offers the autofocus Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG MACRO Art and, more importantly, the newer Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO Art, which many reviewers consider even better than the highly regarded Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS. Sigma has produced an outstanding lens here. Tokina also offers a well-known autofocus model, the Firin 100mm f/2.8 Macro FE.

If your budget is more limited and you do not mind focusing manually, which is often perfectly manageable in macro photography, several third-party brands offer attractive options. These include the Samyang 100mm f/2.8 ED UMC Macro, Meike MK-85mm f/2.8 Macro, Zhong Yi 20mm f/2 4.5x Super Macro and 85mm f/2.8 1-5x Super Macro, as well as several popular Laowa and Voigtlander models. Sony has allowed third-party manufacturers to develop FE-mount lenses for many years, which has resulted in an exceptionally wide choice for Sony full-frame cameras. Below is a summary of the models and brands I have found so far. If you notice a lens or manufacturer that I have missed, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the article.

Sigma offers two main types of lenses for the Sony FE mount. Sigma DG HSM Art lenses were originally developed for DSLR cameras before being adapted to the FE mount. Sigma later began designing lenses specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras under the Sigma DG DN designation. These are generally lighter and more compact than the earlier DSLR-based models. All the Sigma lenses listed here include autofocus. As a reminder, “DG” indicates a lens designed for full-frame cameras, while “DC” refers to APS-C models.

Sigma has also introduced its “I Series”, identified by the “DG DN I” designation. These lenses are designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Below is the list of Sigma lenses originally designed for DSLRs and later adapted to the Sony FE mirrorless mount. Although several of these lenses deliver excellent results, I do not particularly recommend them because of their size and weight. Sigma now produces lenses designed specifically for mirrorless cameras under the DG DN designation. Examples include the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, which also exists in a DG HSM version. Both are considerably more compact and offer excellent image quality.

The lenses below were designed by Sigma specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras and the Sony FE mount. One particularly notable release is the 105mm Macro, which has made a major impact on Sony’s macro lens market while costing less than the former benchmark, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS.

Here are a few lenses that I consider particularly worth examining:

• The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art remains an excellent-quality alternative that is considerably more affordable than Sony’s 12-24mm and 16-35mm f/2.8 zooms. The main drawback for landscape photographers using polarising or ND filters is that it does not accept standard screw-in filters,
• The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art remains one of the best 24-70mm f/2.8 zooms available and generally outperforms the Sony version, which costs almost twice as much, apart from some differences at 24mm. If you need a professional standard f/2.8 zoom, this is one of the strongest options. Photographers with a tighter budget should also consider the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III, which is cheaper but offers slightly lower image quality,
• The Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art and the f/1.4 version are both excellent lenses. For photographers looking for a fast 35mm without spending quite as much, the f/1.4 model remains an outstanding option,
• For environmental portraits, or indoor portraits when you have enough working distance, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art remains one of the best 85mm lenses for Sony full-frame cameras,
• The same applies to macro photographers, who can enjoy the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO Art. It now outperforms the long-established Sony 90mm in several areas while costing less.

Sigma has also announced the 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for full-frame mirrorless cameras, available in E and L mounts. It is the logical successor to the DSLR-era Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM and is both lighter and more compact. Early reviews highlight its excellent construction, new HLA autofocus system and outstanding optical performance, with very good central sharpness from the widest aperture and further improvements by f/2.8. The Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AF II is lighter, slightly less expensive and also performs very well. Overall, this weather-sealed Sigma lens appears fairly priced at around €950.

Here are Sigma’s I Series lenses for the Sony FE mount. Based on the reviews I have read, the Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN I C still feels slightly expensive for the performance it offers compared with other 24mm options available for Sony FE. The Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN I C, on the other hand, is an excellent lens and has received very positive feedback. The Samyang 35mm f/1.8 FE AF may also be worth considering if you want a high-quality 35mm at a lower price. Feedback from portrait photographers on the Sigma 65mm f/2 DG DN | C has been excellent.

Here is the list of Tamron lenses available for the Sony FE mount. They all include autofocus and offer several highly appealing alternatives at considerably lower prices than comparable Sony lenses.

Here are the Tamron FE lenses I consider particularly worth highlighting:

• The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD remains one of the best affordable ultra-wide-angle zooms for Sony full-frame cameras. We tested it extensively on the blog, and you can read our complete Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 review,
• The Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 offers excellent value for money. If you do not need an especially wide aperture, it is a highly attractive wide-angle option, particularly because it also provides a useful 1:2 magnification ratio for close-up photography,
• The Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 performs extremely well and can almost compete with the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM in terms of image quality, despite costing around four times less. We have also published a complete review of this Tamron 24mm,
• The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III has received excellent feedback as a fast standard zoom and costs roughly a third of the price of the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM,
• The Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 is another strong and highly affordable 35mm option if you do not need an especially fast lens. It is also worth comparing with the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 FE AF, which offers a wider aperture and generally better image quality for a similar price,
• The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is another excellent alternative to Sony’s extremely expensive f/2.8 telephoto zoom, while remaining impressively compact and lightweight.

Zeiss offers a selection of lenses for the Sony FE mount, including both autofocus and manual focus models. The two tables below list all the available lenses.

Zeiss offers a small range of autofocus lenses, all featuring excellent build quality but generally carrying a high price. Two models are particularly worth mentioning. The Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 Distagon T* is an excellent, beautifully constructed and weather-sealed lens with very good image quality and a relatively compact design. Its main drawback is its high price, which I do not consider entirely justified. It is still less expensive than Sony’s current benchmark 24mm lens, the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM.

The Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Sonnar T* also enjoys an excellent reputation among portrait photographers, but once again, I find its price relatively high. For a similar amount, I would personally choose the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, which appears to offer better image quality according to the reviews I have read.

As far as I know, the table below includes all Zeiss manual focus lenses available for Sony full-frame cameras.

Tokina offers several autofocus and manual focus lenses, all listed below. Among the more noteworthy models is the Tokina Firin 20mm f/2 FE AF. However, given its image quality, size, weight and especially its price, I do not particularly recommend it over other 20mm options for Sony full-frame cameras. The Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2, for example, is lighter, considerably less expensive and offers better overall image quality.

The Tokina 85mm f/1.8 ATX-M FE faces similar competition, as several alternative lenses provide better image quality at a lower weight. The excellent Samyang 85mm f/1.4 FE AF costs roughly the same while offering better image quality and more attractive bokeh. The Samyang 75mm f/1.8 FE AF is another outstanding-value alternative.

The Tokina Firin 100mm f/2.8 Macro FE is more interesting. It has a fairly good reputation and costs considerably less than the well-known Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS, which is excellent but roughly twice as expensive. Macro photographers with around €200 more to spend should nevertheless consider one of the best current macro lenses for Sony FE: the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO Art.

Samyang offers a broad selection of lenses for Sony’s FE mount. Its autofocus models are much newer and generally deliver very good optical quality at significantly lower prices than comparable Sony lenses. If you are working with a tighter budget, this is clearly a brand worth considering.

Samyang offers a wide selection of autofocus prime lenses for the Sony FE mount. Whatever your preferred style of photography, you are likely to find a suitable option. Most Samyang autofocus lenses remain excellent value, and I share more detailed recommendations below the table.

Samyang offers a large number of manual focus lenses, although I no longer particularly recommend them now that the brand produces high-quality autofocus alternatives. In 2020, Samyang updated two manual focus models: the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 MK2 MF and Samyang 85mm f/1.4 MK2 MF.

The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 MK2 MF features improved construction and a revised optical design compared with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Asph. Unfortunately, image quality is not significantly better. Sharpness remains average at the widest aperture, and the lens needs to be stopped down to around f/4 before it becomes genuinely good. An autofocus version is also available, the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 FE AF, although it costs roughly twice as much without offering a dramatic improvement.

Samyang also released the 85mm f/1.4 MK2 MF, but its soft wide-open performance leaves a mixed impression. Within a similar budget, I would prefer the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 FE II, which performs better overall and costs around €350. With a larger budget, consider the excellent Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE or the more expensive Sigma DG DN 85mm f/1.4 Art, two of the strongest 85mm lenses currently available.
