Fujifilm X-T5 vs X-M5

The X-M5 marks Fujifilm's remarkable return to entry-level compact mirrorless photography, following on from the iconic X-E4 introduced over four years ago. Combining a 26.1 MP APS-C sensor with the latest X-Processor 5 processor, this model offers a balance between lightness and efficiency. Weighing in at just 355g, it has a portable design and a folding screen that's handy for a variety of shots. However, the lack of internal stabilisation and limited compatibility with UHS-I SD cards are reminders of the concessions made to keep the price affordable.

When it comes to photography, the X-M5 offers an electronic burst of up to 20 fps, although its buffer memory remains modest at 30 recordable RAWs. Thanks to its film simulation modes, the camera offers 20 different renditions inspired by Fujifilm's iconic films. Its native ISO range of 160 to 12,800, extendable to 51,200, means it can work in a wide range of lighting conditions. Despite these advantages, the camera is not tropicalised, which limits its use in damp or dusty environments.

In terms of video, the X-M5 stands out with the introduction of 6.2K at 30fps, a rare feature in this category. There are also options for 4K at up to 60 fps and Full HD at 240 fps for smooth slow-motion shots. Although there is no mechanical stabiliser, digital stabilisation corrects for camera shake at the cost of slight blurring. Inspired by the retro design of the X100 series, but with interchangeable lenses, this model will appeal to discerning photographers and videographers looking for a compact, versatile hybrid.
