Canon R5 Mark II vs R8

Canon shakes up the market in July 2024 with the EOS R5 Mark II, the successor to the star model launched four years earlier. While the resolution remains at 45 MP, the new semi-stacked sensor promises to be a real tour de force. The integration of AI at the heart of the DIGIC Accelerator processor, combined with DIGIC X, revolutionizes autofocus. Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is perfected with finer subject detection, including a dedicated Sports mode, and sensitivity boosted to -6.5 EV. Photographers will appreciate the 30 fps burst speed in electronic mode and the maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000s.

The new R5 builds on the strengths of the original: dual memory slots (SD/CF Express B), an optimized 5.76 Mpix OLED viewfinder and a 3.2-inch swivel screen. Videographers are also well catered for with 8K DCI RAW 60 fps without cropping and 4K 120p. The LP-E6P battery provides up to 630 shots. 5-axis stabilization reaches a new level with 8.5 stops of compensation.

This in-depth revision has been achieved without changing the dimensions of the body, which weighs only a few grams. The R5 Mark II represents a major evolution that improves performance in all areas. The Canon EOS R8, with a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor, was launched in April 2023. It is positioned as an economical alternative in Canon's full-frame range, combining lightness and efficiency. At 461g, it is the lightest full-frame model produced by Canon.

This model incorporates many of the features of the Canon R6 Mark II, including the sensor, 3-inch screen, 1.62 megapixel resolution and advanced autofocus algorithms. In terms of video, it can shoot in 4K UHD 60p without cropping and capture Full HD slow-motion at 180 fps. However, it does not benefit from 5-axis image stabilization.

The R8 offers an ISO range of 100 to 102400, similar to the R6 Mark II. The grip is comfortable despite the lack of a joystick, and it remains resistant to dust and moisture. The electronic viewfinder has a slightly lower resolution than the R6 Mk II, but provides a good viewing experience.

In terms of connectivity, the R8 is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It uses an older LP-E17 battery, which reduces its autonomy compared to Canon's other full-frame cameras. The Canon EOS R8 is ideal for enthusiasts looking for full-frame performance, or for professionals looking for a backup camera. It offers excellent value for money despite some compromises.
