Hello! It has clearly been a while since I last wrote an article about New Zealand, but here I am again. A couple of years have passed since I published my complete guide to the must-see places on the Coromandel Peninsula, and I thought a guide to where to stay on the Coromandel Peninsula could help you plan your trip. I was lucky enough to spend five days there, and I can assure you that it is well worth the detour. It was one of the highlights of one of my New Zealand road trips (see how-to article). With its beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and hidden corners, the area gave all of us a real change of scenery. Wild yet welcoming, the Coromandel Peninsula is full of surprises. Unfortunately, I did not have time to see everything, as is often the case when traveling slowly. Still, that simply gives me a reason to return, even though I now live all the way over in Guadeloupe. I would love to discover what I missed and revisit some of the peninsula’s most beautiful places, including the famous Hot Water Beach outside peak season, Cathedral Cove, New Chum Beach, and many more. The only real downside was the number of visitors who, like me, did not want to miss these incredible spots. Even so, it certainly did not stop me from enjoying the trip, although I may have grumbled once or twice.
The aim of this article is to give you a useful selection of places to stay near the peninsula’s main attractions. I recommend spending several days on the Coromandel Peninsula and staying in more than one area. With that said, I will let you discover the accommodation options I have selected for you.

Where to stay on the Coromandel Peninsula: the best towns and accommodations
Where to stay in Whitianga: the best hotels
There is a reason I am starting with Whitianga. It is often used as a base for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula, and it is easy to see why. It is one of the largest towns in the area and, even better, it is close to several must-see places, including Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, and the beaches around Cooks Beach.
Oceans Resort Whitianga
Oceans Resort is ideally located in Whitianga, close to Buffalo Beach and the town center. It offers a choice of spacious, fully equipped apartments that work well for families, groups of friends, or couples. Facilities include a heated swimming pool, a tennis court, and even a children’s playground. If you are looking for a convenient location and a relaxed atmosphere, Oceans Resort is a very good option.

The Oceanside Motel
As its name suggests, this motel is a great place to wake up to beautiful views over Mercury Bay. You can choose from several comfortable suites and studios, all equipped with the essentials, including a kitchenette and a terrace or balcony overlooking the water. The Oceanside Motel is a simple and comfortable base for enjoying Whitianga.
Jennie's In Whitianga
This welcoming guesthouse offers a comfortable stay in Whitianga. It is slightly farther from the town center than the previous property, but the neighborhood is quiet. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated, while the host serves a good breakfast and provides useful amenities such as private parking. Everything is designed to make your stay as straightforward as possible.
Recommended accommodation in Coromandel Town
Next, we head to Coromandel Town, a peaceful little corner of the peninsula. The atmosphere is relaxed, and I particularly like its authentic feel. Staying here also puts you close to the Driving Creek Railway, although I did not visit it myself because it felt a little too touristy at the time.

Coromandel Seaview Motel
Reviews of this motel are consistently positive, describing it as a peaceful retreat between the sea and the mountains. There are studios for two as well as a full apartment with a spa area and a hot tub overlooking the water. Long Bay Beach is only 300 meters away. If you want to treat yourself in a beautiful setting, this motel is an excellent choice.

You can choose between comfortable en-suite rooms and dormitories. All guests have access to well-equipped shared kitchens, spacious gardens, and barbecue areas. It is a good option for meeting other travelers during your stay.
Hush Boutique Accommodation
If you are looking for somewhere a little different, Hush Boutique Accommodation is worth considering. Set among the trees, it offers wooden bungalows with private terraces. The natural setting is a major part of the appeal, and this is exactly the kind of off-the-beaten-path accommodation I enjoy.
Long Bay Motor Camp
Long Bay Motor Camp is a great option for staying by the sea, with access to its own private beach. The campground offers several types of accommodations, from cabins to chalets, all designed for simple but practical comfort. Guests especially appreciate the panoramic ocean views and activities such as kayaking.
Stay in Hahei: Hotels near Cathedral Cove and Hahei Beach
Next comes Hahei, a pretty coastal town with a white-sand beach and turquoise water. From here, you will be close to both Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.

Hahei Beach Resort
As you might expect, Hahei Beach Resort fully lives up to its name. The property sits directly on the beach, with Cathedral Cove about an hour away on foot. That may sound like a long walk, but it is well worth the effort. You can choose from comfortable villas and bungalows accommodating up to seven guests, with either sea or garden views. In my opinion, it is an especially good choice for families or groups.
Hahei Pavillion Guest House
This charming guesthouse combines a friendly atmosphere with plenty of peace and quiet. It offers easy access to the surrounding beaches and Cathedral Cove. The rooms have recently been renovated and are tastefully decorated. Andrea and Mike, the hosts, are also very welcoming and happy to share their best tips for exploring the area, which is a real advantage.

Above all, the setting is peaceful and surrounded by nature, creating a real sense of being away from it all. Personally, that is exactly the kind of experience I enjoy, especially far from the crowds.
When is the best time to visit the Coromandel?
I would recommend visiting between December and March, when you are more likely to make the most of the beaches and water activities. Spring can also be a good option if you want to avoid the busiest period. I visited in October to stay away from peak season and enjoy relatively mild temperatures. The weather was ideal, although there were still more visitors than I would have liked. The final choice is yours. For more details about when to visit New Zealand, take a look at the article linked above. Hopefully, it will help you settle on your travel dates.
Why choose the Coromandel?
As you can probably tell, I highly recommend visiting the peninsula. Between the sandy beaches, lush forests, hot springs, and small coastal towns, the area offers a genuine change of scenery. Whether you enjoy hiking, outdoor activities, or local history, there is plenty to discover. The natural surroundings also make it an excellent place to slow down and relax. I could keep going, but I will stop here. Hopefully, I have inspired you to visit the Coromandel Peninsula.
