My first article about the island of Barbados and what to do there was last year, just after our two weeks there with the family! And here I am again with a new article about the island to answer the famous question I’ve been asked several times: where to stay in Barbados? Well, those of you who have been following my little series of articles on Barbados the island will already know that it’s a destination that has left me with somewhat mixed feelings. Let me explain: I found the island to be the perfect place to relax and unwind with the family, but for all that, it’s a highly developed area, sometimes too much so for my taste. In fact, there are some great beaches on the west coast (Paynes Beach, Sandy Lane Beach, Batts Rock Beach, Mullins Beach). Most travellers only go there for a few days (or even a single day), for a getaway or an excursion.
As for us, we wanted to spend a good two weeks there, to really take the time to visit and relax. This longer stay allowed us to explore the many facets of Barbados: sublime beaches, botanical gardens, beautiful caves and even Sargasso (much to my delight, ironically of course, ahah). As you can see, we made it! And even though Barbados wasn’t a destination that made my “coup de coeur” list in my eyes, I still have fond memories of it with Mélanie and the kids!
Anyway, I won’t go into too much detail. As you’ve probably guessed, this article is about the best places to stay in Barbados. If you are staying for more than a day, I suggest you read on! I’ve prepared several lists of accommodation for you: from luxury hotels to guest houses. Something to suit every taste and budget!
Why choose Barbados as your holiday destination?
I know that Barbados may not mean much to you. It’s true that it’s still little known to the French. To put it in perspective, it’s a small island in the Caribbean. For us, it was a flight of just over three hours from Guadeloupe! That’s still pretty quick, ahah! So, the real question is: why choose Barbados as a destination?
I’d say there are a number of reasons. First of all, Barbados is an island of contrasts and surprises. On the one hand, there are white sandy beaches with calm turquoise waters, perfect for relaxing. On the other, there are the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast. You get the idea, don’t you? Even though its 430 km² can easily be covered in a day, it’s still a destination with a lot to discover: botanical gardens (Hunte’s Garden and Andromeda Botanical Garden), caves, rum distilleries… In my opinion, there’s still a lot to do! Not to mention the friendliness of the locals! In my opinion, this always makes for a more enjoyable stay!
The best areas and places to stay in Barbados according to your type of stay
Still with the idea of helping you organise your stay in Barbados, I’d like to tell you about the different parts of the island depending on what you’re looking for. Let me explain: if you’re here for quiet beaches and a luxury getaway, head to the west coast, around Holetown or Speightstown! You’ll also find postcard scenery and beautiful hotels. If you’re looking for a more lively atmosphere (so you’re right in the middle of the action!), I’d recommend staying in the south, near Saint Lawrence Gap with its restaurants and bars! And that’s not all! If you are looking for total immersion in nature, the east of the island should appeal to you, near Bathsheba! In short, I’ve given you a quick tour of Barbados, but the choice is yours!
