I’ve explored Canada quite a bit now that I’ve been here for just over 5 years. I chose Quebec and settled in Montreal. If you want to know more about my adopted city, I invite you to read our article. It explains in detail what to do in Montreal and gives you a great overview of the city and what to see in each district. Today, we’re back in this article to talk about a new destination in Quebec: Charlevoix.
The Charlevoix region is known for its large natural parks with breathtaking scenery, its charming picturesque villages and its gastronomic and cultural activities. All of these elements combine to make it a prime tourist destination.
With so much to tell, here are the top ten things to do in Charlevoix! We’ve also written a complete guide to things to do in the Mont-Tremblant region!
Valérie and I went snowmobiling in the Laurentians, if you’re interested in other activities – excellent!
If you want to discover another area, the Saguenay region is the place to go. Valérie will take us there!
We also decided to rent all our winter clothes during our trip to Canada, and it was a very good decision!
What activities are available in Charlevoix?
Hiking in Charlevoix
One of my favourite activities and one of the most common in the region is to take advantage of the great outdoors and go hiking. There are 3 large nature parks:
- Parc National des Grands Jardin (SEPAQ Park)
- The Charlevoix Massif
- Parc National des Hautes-Gorges de la rivière Malbaie (SEPAQ Park)
Each of these parks offers a variety of hikes for all levels. The SEPAQ parks are Quebec’s national parks. There is an entrance fee of $9.55 CAD for daily entry. But it’s well worth it! The fact that you have to pay means that the park and its signs are well maintained, with clean and varied facilities such as shops, an environmental centre, museums, etc.
If I had to recommend one walk in the area, it would be l’acropole des draveurs in the Parc National des Hautes-Gorges de la rivière Malbaie. It’s a tough hike, with an 800m drop, reputedly the most difficult in the area, but the views from the top are breathtaking. It’s also one of the best views I’ve seen in Quebec.

There are two other hikes in the area that are, in my opinion, worth a look:
- Sentier du Mont-du-Lac-des-Cygnes: This is a challenging hike that rewards hikers with stunning views of the mountains and lake. It is a great nature experience.
- Sentier Les Caps: Hugging the coastline with breathtaking views of the St Lawrence and its rugged capes, this trail is perfect for sea and mountain lovers.
Speaking of outdoor activities, there is also a via ferrata near Saint Siméon. Sylvain and I have already told you about our partner Manawa, which allows you to book outdoor activities online, and well, you can find a super interesting online offer to explore the Parc des Palissades de Charlevoix in an adventurous but safe way. Thrill seekers will love it!
Visit Charlevoix's picturesque villages
You’ll feel like you’re on the set of a North American film in the villages of Baie Saint Paul, Les Éboulements or La Malbaie. Full of charm and cultural activities, these villages offer rejuvenating gourmet breaks and each has its own unique atmosphere.
For its artistic side and proximity to the river, we head to Baie Saint Paul. Take time to relax on the beach and in the village. Wander the cobbled streets, visit the village’s art galleries or explore the Baie Saint-Paul Museum of Contemporary Art.
Saint-Irénée and Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, along the river, are unpretentious but charm visitors with their coastal landscapes, picturesque little churches and local markets.

Each village reveals a unique part of Charlevoix’s history and culture, and what I loved was the authenticity of the people and the natural splendour of the landscapes.
The Charlevoix Flavour Trail
“La Route des Saveurs de Charlevoix” is another way for those with a sweet tooth (and I’m one of them) to explore the region. It’s a gastronomic adventure that takes visitors to the heart of the region’s rich culinary tradition. The route is lined with farms, cheese dairies, vineyards and bakeries. Stop for a gourmet break and discover the unique flavours of Charlevoix.
Travellers who venture here will discover the authenticity and passion that characterise the region’s agriculture and gastronomy, while tasting exceptional local products such as renowned cheeses, tasty meats and quality wines.
L’isle-aux-coudres
By bike or car, Isle-aux-Coudres is accessible by free ferry. Situated on the St. Lawrence River, the peaceful atmosphere of the island and the many farms and orchards invite travellers to sample the famous apple pie and other local delicacies.
No stress here. Go for a walk or a bike ride, take time to visit the many centuries-old churches, stroll along the beaches and take in the views. Learn about the history of the island by chatting with the “porpoises” (as the islanders are called). Finally, take a break at the village chocolate factory, the mill or the local cider house.

You can also fill up on sporting activities:
- In summer, it’s the ideal place to enjoy the river, to go kitesurfing or kayaking, or to cycle around the island with over 20 km of cycle paths.
- In winter, the scenery is white. It’s a giant playground for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice canoeing.
The Charlevoix Casino
For those who want to get a little lucky, a visit to the Casino de Charlevoix is highly recommended. With slot machines, gaming tables, shows, restaurants and hotels, the casino is located in the heart of the region. It’s sure to add a touch of glamour to your stay.
You can stay at the Manoir Richelieu, which sits majestically on the cliffs of Pointe-au-Pic. It offers spectacular views of the St Lawrence River. The casino regularly organises shows and events to entertain visitors. The atmosphere is lively and very festive. Whether you’re a gambling enthusiast or just looking for a lively night out, the Casino de Charlevoix is a great stop off the beaten track.
Whale watching in Tadoussac
We mentioned whale watching in the Tadoussac area in a previous article. Well, you can also watch them in the Charlevoix area.
Boat trips departing from the harbours of La Malbaie or Baie-Sainte-Catherine offer a unique opportunity to see various species of whales. These include beluga whales, fin whales and the impressive humpback whales. The nutrient-rich waters of the St. Lawrence River create an ideal ecosystem for these giants of the sea. Observing them is an unforgettable experience.

During these excursions, whether by Zodiac or by cruise boat, experienced guides will share their knowledge of marine biology and conservation, adding an educational dimension to what is an enriching experience.
The thrill of watching a whale emerge majestically from the depths of the ocean is an experience that will remain with you forever. Whale watching in Charlevoix is a must for nature lovers and marine life enthusiasts.
Charlevoix Railway
Through the charming landscapes of Quebec’s Charlevoix region, the Charlevoix Train offers a picturesque railway adventure. Departing from Baie-Saint-Paul station, the train travels 125 kilometres along the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and La Malbaie, offering breathtaking views of mountains, coastal villages and lush green fields.
The route passes through seven towns and villages along the shore. Passengers can enjoy the comfort of the panoramic cars while taking in the natural beauty of Charlevoix.
A unique experience in Quebec, the Train de Charlevoix is much more than just a means of transportation: it’s a real tourist excursion that lets you discover the authentic charm of the region.
With informative commentary on board, passengers learn more about the history, culture and geography of Charlevoix, adding an educational dimension to this rail escapade. Whether it’s a picturesque day out or a romantic getaway, the Train de Charlevoix offers a unique way to discover the splendour of this exceptional region.
Kayaking in La Malbaie
If you love nature and water, this is the activity for you: embark on an adventure and take a guided sea kayak trip on the St. Lawrence River from Saint-Siméon.
You’ll be able to admire the magnificent Charlevoix Mountains from an unusual vantage point and sail into the heart of the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, a nature reserve teeming with amazing aquatic wildlife.
Who knows, with a bit of luck you might spot harbour seals or even beluga whales. This adventure is open to all, with three different trips to suit everyone. Thanks to our experienced guides, this is an educational, safe and rewarding experience.
Dog sledding
If you come to the Charlevoix region during the winter season, I invite you to try dog sledding. As I’ve already told you in our article on where to go dog-sledding in Quebec, this activity is the most emblematic here!
It’s the one you imagine doing if you’re planning a winter holiday in Quebec. You’ll be immersed in breathtaking winter landscapes while getting back in touch with nature, and it’s a real must!

In the Charlevoix region, I invite you to book a dog sled trip in Saint-Siméon. The guides at Bosco Charlevoix will be happy to welcome you and share their passion for sled dogs with you.
You can choose to ride as a passenger in a sled driven by an experienced guide, or try your hand at driving the team! Quite a programme! Personally, I’d advise you to try driving – it’s a real thrill!
If you’re visiting Quebec in the summer, you can also visit the Bosco Charlevoix dog park near Saint-Siméon. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the dogs during their “day off” and share a moment of complicity with them. It’s a great family activity.
And there’s good news for winter and summer hikers: Bosco Charlevoix is offering a new activity, a dog trek! After a safety briefing, the guide will pair you up with an Alaskan Husky companion who’s adapted to your needs, and you’ll set off to explore the region.
Attached to your waist, the dog allows you to move forward without effort in the steepest areas and is a great opportunity to share a moment with the dog.
Snowmobiling
To round off this list, here’s the great winter thrill: snowmobiling. And what better way to do it than to explore the forests of the Charlevoix region on an electric snowmobile. Yes, electric snowmobiles are the new thing. A pleasure that’s no longer a guilty pleasure, set off from La Malbaie and enjoy nature in silence. For 1 hour and 45 minutes, you’ll be able to play safely with this technological jewel and discover Quebec nature in all its splendour.
Your guide will provide you with warm clothing suitable for the activity and will be at your side throughout.
The Charlevoix region is one of my favourites, and I’m sure you’ll love it too. I can only recommend that you take the time to discover it during your trip.
Indeed, here are all our top places to try snowmobiling around Quebec!
