Sony A7 III vs Nikon Z5

The Sony Alpha 7 III, released in February 2018, is a 24.2-megapixel full-format mirrorless camera. In selecting this model for my switch to mirrorless cameras, I chose it as a benchmark due to its exceptional image quality in both photo and video. The camera features a back-illuminated sensor and BIONZ X processor, enabling 4K UHD recording at 30 fps (with slight cropping) and Full HD recording at 120 fps. The ISO sensitivity extends to 51,200, extendable to 204,800, offering outstanding low-light performance.

The Alpha 7 III features integrated 5-axis stabilization, protection against the effects of temperature and humidity, and an enhanced battery life, thanks to the NP-FZ100 battery. It also offers two SD card slots (one UHS-II and one UHS-I) and full connectivity, including a USB-C port. The camera's 10 fps burst rate and buffer capacity of up to 40 RAW images or 177 JPEG images ensures optimal responsiveness. The camera features a 693-point hybrid autofocus system that covers 93% of the sensor, along with an Eye-AF function for precise eye tracking, ideal for portrait photography. Furthermore, the silent burst shutter allows for discreet and efficient photography.

Designed for intermediate and expert photographers, this camera offers excellent ergonomics, with a 2.36 million-dot OLED viewfinder and tilting touchscreen. Although now superseded by the more recent and more expensive Alpha 7 IV, the a7 III remains a sound investment with unbeatable value for money. Overall, the Sony Alpha 7 III continues to be a popular choice due to its versatile performance and durability.

Launching in July 2020, the Nikon Z5 is a 24.3-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera. Designed as a more affordable alternative in Nikon's full-format mirrorless camera lineup, it is aimed at beginners, enthusiasts looking for a high-performance second body, and those who want to discover photography with a high-quality hybrid camera. It inherits many of the features of its big brothers, the Z6 and Z7, while offering excellent value for money.

This rugged, lightweight model is designed to withstand moisture and dust. The Z5 is equipped with two UHS-II SD card slots, offering greater flexibility for storing and shooting photos and videos simultaneously. It uses the new EN-EL15c battery, which can be recharged via USB-C, ideal for long shooting sessions. The Z5's electronic viewfinder is identical to the Z6's, but its LCD screen resolution is slightly lower, an acceptable compromise for a more affordable model.

In terms of video, the Z5 offers 4K UHD recording at 30 fps and Full HD at 60 fps. However, burst rates are limited to 4.5 fps, well below the Z6's 12 fps, making the Z5 less suitable for sports photography. The mirrorless camera's 273-point autofocus system provides fast, accurate focusing, which is especially effective for portraits and moderate action scenes. In short, the Nikon Z5 is an excellent introduction to the world of full-frame photography, combining performance, flexibility and affordability at a competitive price.
