Nikon Z5 II vs Canon R8

Unveiled in April 2025, the Nikon Z5 II is the successor to a model launched five years earlier, clearly demonstrating the brand's ambition to set new standards. It features the EXPEED 7 processor, which is already used in professional cameras, enabling bursts of 14 fps in both mechanical and electronic modes. Its full-frame sensor features five-axis stabilisation and supports ISO speeds of up to 102,400 (expandable). The screen is more flexible thanks to full articulation and a comfortable resolution of 2.01 megapixels.

Physically, Nikon has remained faithful to the proportions of its predecessor, maintaining a compact size of 134 × 100.5 × 72 mm and a weight of approximately 700 g, so the camera still feels natural in the hand. However, the ergonomics have been optimised, making the camera more weather-resistant and equipping it with dual SD UHS-II ports and an extremely accurate autofocus, even in very low light (down to -10 EV). The result is a real sense of control, whether capturing a scene quickly or composing with care.

Designed with video in mind, the Z5 II offers internal N-RAW recording while retaining classic features such as 4K UHD at 30 fps and Full HD at up to 120 fps. Built-in creative profiles make it easy to achieve personalised results. The Canon EOS R8 is a full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24.2-megapixel sensor. It is positioned as an affordable solution in Canon's full-frame range, combining lightness and performance. Weighing just 461g, it is the lightest full-frame camera ever developed by Canon.

The R8 shares many of the features of the Canon R6 Mark II, including the sensor, 3-inch screen, 1.62 million-dot resolution and advanced autofocus algorithms. In terms of video, it boasts the ability to shoot in 4K UHD 60p without cropping, as well as Full HD slow-motion at 180 fps. However, it does not have 5-axis image stabilization.

In terms of ISO range, the R8 is similar to the R6 Mark II, with a native range of ISO 100 to 102400. Handling is pleasant even without a joystick, and it is designed to be dust- and moisture-resistant. The electronic viewfinder has a slightly lower resolution than the R6 Mk II, but is still comfortable to use.

In terms of connectivity, the R8 is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It uses an older LP-E17 battery, which limits its autonomy compared to Canon's other full-frame cameras. The Canon EOS R8 is ideal for amateurs looking for full-frame performance, or for professionals who need a backup camera. It offers excellent value for money, despite some limitations.
