Panasonic GH7 vs GH6

Released in the summer of 2024, two and a half years after the GH6, the Panasonic Lumix GH7 continues the tradition of the GH series while preserving the essence of its predecessor's strengths. It retains its 25.2 MP sensor, weather-resistant stabilised body and proportions similar to those of the GH6. The user experience remains the same, thanks in particular to the dual slot (CFexpress Type B + SD UHS-II) and the same battery.

The biggest change is to the autofocus system, which now uses a mirrorless mode that combines phase and contrast, whereas the GH6 used a contrast-only approach. At the same time, Panasonic has introduced a BSI CMOS sensor to improve noise management and sensitivity. Display and burst rates are close to those of the previous model, which were already impressive.

When it comes to video, the GH7 goes one step further with Open Gate mode and unlimited internal ProRes RAW recording up to 5.7K at 30fps. This range of features makes the GH7 a versatile camera, ideal for those who want a Micro 4/3 body that delivers excellent performance in both still and video capture.

The Lumix GH6 marks a turning point in the evolution of the Micro 4/3 range. Its 25.2 MP sensor offers better resolution than the GH5 II, while retaining the qualities for which the series is renowned: effective stabilisation and a construction that can withstand harsh conditions. The GH6's video capabilities are particularly impressive, with the ability to record in 5.8K at 30 fps.

In terms of design, the GH6 stands out for its robustness and meticulous ergonomics, despite weighing in at 823g, a slight increase on the previous model. There have been some notable improvements, notably the integration of two types of memory card slots: one for SD UHS-II and another for CFexpress type B, the latter being essential for the most advanced video modes. The autonomy is slightly reduced, allowing you to take around 360 pictures per charge. The 3.68 megapixel electronic viewfinder and 1.84 megapixel navigable touchscreen are retained to ensure the best possible user experience.

For dynamic photography enthusiasts, the GH6's burst mode achieves a remarkable 75 fps in electronic shutter mode. Without revolutionising the market, this camera stands out as a versatile, high-flying mirrorless camera capable of meeting the demands of photographers and videographers alike.
