Ricoh GR III vs Leica M10

Available in March 2019, the Ricoh GR III embodies the third generation of the brand's expert compact. Replacing the GR II, it offers some notable improvements. With a 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor, it features mechanical stabilisation and hybrid autofocus. Its fixed 28 mm full-frame lens is ideal for street photography. The GR III is small and light (257g), making it easy to carry. However, it loses the built-in flash of its predecessor and the screen remains fixed, which is a drawback. The menu interface is also very simple.

In terms of performance, the hybrid autofocus doesn't offer a significant improvement over the GR II. Burst rates are average and video mode is limited to 1080p at 60 fps. Image quality is satisfactory, with good sharpness thanks to the new sensor, but noise appears fairly quickly (ISO 3200/4000). Battery life is limited, at around 200 photos per charge.

To sum up, the improvements over the previous model are modest and the GR IIIx, which will be launched in September 2021, only brings a change of lens (equivalent to 40 mm). The Ricoh GR III remains an interesting option for photographers looking for a compact camera with a large sensor. An 'HDF' version was also introduced in March 2024, adding a diffusion filter for slightly milky, cinematic visual effects.

Launched at the beginning of 2017, the Leica M10 embodies a remarkable achievement within the renowned M range, staying true to classic photographic technology with a full-format sensor and M mount. This simplified camera deliberately omits autofocus and video. Weighing only 660 g, it combines optimal ergonomics with Leica's characteristic robustness. It has a modest burst rate of 5 fps, a decent quality screen, SD UHS-I card support and a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000s, perfect for capturing flash action in good light.

With no stabilisation, the M10 forces photographers to perfect their manual technique, enhancing their shooting experience. It is widely acclaimed for its excellent build quality, its accurate and improved rangefinder and its ability to produce high quality images up to ISO 6400.

In 2022, the M10 gave way to the Leica M11, which introduced major advances such as a more defined sensor, an improved processor, improved battery performance and longer battery life, while retaining the heritage of the M series. The M10 continues to appeal to purists with its combination of performance and traditional aesthetics.
