After covering all the classic brands known to the wider public, I recently decided to start listing more niche systems too. I have already talked about Leica with my page listing all the lenses for the L-mount, since Leica, Panasonic and Sigma formed an alliance in 2018 to produce lenses for this mount.

On this page, I’ll be looking at a mount that is almost as old as the hills: the Leica M mount, introduced by Leica in 1954 with the Leica M3 body. The “M” refers to the German word “Messsucher“, which translates as “Rangefinder” in English. Current M-mount cameras use what is known as a rangefinder system. This is a very specific type of photography, based on manual focus. Some people love it, others don’t!

Here is a quick overview of Leica cameras using this M mount. I have only listed the most recent models, although you will of course still find older cameras using this long-standing mount.

Acronyms related to the Leica M mount

ASPH: lenses equipped with aspherical elements.
APO: apochromatic lenses
ZM: used by Zeiss to indicate compatibility with the Leica M mount

In the table below, you will find the list of all recent Leica lenses for the Leica M mount. I know that some older lenses are missing.

For information, Leica uses several classic terms according to the maximum aperture of the lens. In general, you will find:

Noctilux: maximum aperture at f/1
Summilux: maximum aperture at f/1.4
Summicron: maximum aperture at f/2
Elmarit: maximum aperture at f/2.8
Elmar: maximum aperture at f/3.5 (but also used for larger apertures)

TTArtisan offers a set of lenses for the Leica M mount. The TTArtisan 50mm f/0.95 Leica M is especially worth noting, as it is an interesting alternative to the Leica Noctilux M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH, which is extremely expensive. Of course, we are not in the same category, but for less than 900€, this lens is worth considering if you are looking for a very fast 50mm, perfect for portrait photography, for example.
