Launched in October 2018 alongside the Canon R, the Canon EOS RP is one of the brand's first two full-format bodies. At 26.2 megapixels, it is not an evolution of a previous model, but rather an affordable offering for those looking to enter the world of full-format mirrorless cameras. Ideal for beginners, this body offers a low-cost entry into the world of high-quality photography without the complexity of more advanced models.

However, despite its accessibility, the Canon EOS RP has some limitations, such as the lack of internal stabilization, a low burst rate, and a maximum shutter speed limited to 1/4000 of a second. These characteristics can be a hindrance for certain types of photography, such as fast action or video, especially since its 4K video function also suffers from significant cropping. It also comes with a single UHS-II compatible SD memory card slot, which is sufficient for basic storage needs.

All in all, the Canon EOS RP is an excellent choice for photographers on a budget who want to discover the benefits of a full-frame mirrorless camera system. However, those looking for more advanced features may be better off looking at newer models such as the Canon R8, currently Canon's cheapest full-frame offering, which offers significant improvements over the EOS RP.

The Sony Alpha 6400, released in January 2019, is a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor camera. This new addition to the Sony range joins the A6100 and A6600 models, offering balanced performance for photography and video enthusiasts. Notwithstanding the lack of sensor stabilization, the camera offers remarkable image quality due to its effective management of ISO sensitivity.

In terms of design, the a6400 shares the same viewfinder and screen as the A6600 and A6100, with a modest resolution that may not meet the expectations of some users with more demanding requirements. While it is lacking a headphone jack and utilising only a micro USB port, the camera offers comprehensive connectivity with HDMI, Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.

The a6400 is suitable for both amateur photographers and experienced videographers, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of photography and videography applications, including portraits, landscapes, and sports photography. Its rapid autofocus and real-time eye tracking capabilities make it a highly capable camera. Despite a few limitations, the Sony a6400 offers excellent value for money and is a solid choice in Sony's APS-C range, especially for those seeking a balance between more economical models like the A6100 and more advanced and expensive options like the A6600 and A6700.
