Where to Stay in Lanzarote?
Last updated on 13 July 2026
We agree, choosing where to stay in Lanzarote is almost as important as the things to see and do on the island. The island itself is not very large, but like the other islands of the archipelago, you can also check our guide to know where to stay in the Canary Islands. Lanzarote has a strong identity with very different places to settle down. Broadly speaking, Lanzarote combines volcanic and lunar landscapes, villages with white houses, black and golden beaches, and the famous vineyards that create unique landscapes.
Whatever the case, there is no shortage of choice in Lanzarote. There's really something for everyone! That's exactly what we loved about the island, this exotic side between black, desert-like lands and its lively or more authentic little spots. Our goal is precisely to present you with the best places to stay in Lanzarote, according to your travel style, desires, and what you plan to do on the island. Between beaches, hikes, surfing, visits, lounging, villages... we intend to take things in hand to help you find the perfect spot to make the most of Lanzarote. If you're preparing your trip, also consider checking out the must-sees on the island of Lanzarote. And if you’re planning to explore more of the archipelago, you could also spend some time on Fuerteventura, which is right next to Lanzarote. So, are you in?

Which Area to Choose for Staying in Lanzarote?
Before booking, we suggest taking a look at the main areas of the island to help you choose the place that best matches your travel style.
South - Playa Blanca : It's not for nothing that we start with this area; it's one of our favorites among all the others on the island. Here, the sun shines all year round, and that feels good, with mild temperatures. Plus, the atmosphere is more relaxed and laid-back; you feel good right away! And then, as the island is still small, even if you're in the center of the island, you feel isolated but not really. You can reach all the must-sees (within an hour at most for the furthest ones).
East - Costa Teguise & Arrecife : If you like to move around without making long trips every day, this area should please you. It is lively and convenient, with everything you need at your fingertips: local restaurants, accessible beaches, small shops, and more! For your information, this is often where you find the most affordable accommodations on the entire island, if that interests you.
Center/Southeast - Puerto del Carmen & Puerto Calero : We arrive at the most comprehensive area. Here, you will find beautiful beaches to swim in, nice places to go out in the evening, all in a pleasant atmosphere. Plus, it's almost at the center of the island, so you can easily do plenty of activities on the island without spending a lot of time in the car or transportation. On our side, we especially loved the swims because the water is calmer on this side, and it's much more enjoyable, even with kids.

FAQ - Where to stay in Lanzarote
What’s the best area to stay in Lanzarote depending on my travel style (beaches, hiking, nightlife, or peace and quiet)?
To choose the right area, start with your priorities. For beaches and dream scenery, the south around Playa Blanca offers beautiful coves, a sea that’s often calmer, and easy access to the Papagayo landscapes. For nightlife, going out, and a wide choice of restaurants, look instead at Puerto del Carmen: it’s lively, convenient, and well located for exploring. If you’re after a family-friendly compromise with promenades, serviced beaches, and water sports, Costa Teguise is a safe bet, quieter in the evenings. For hiking, volcanoes, and a more authentic atmosphere, opt for the interior (Tinajo, Yaiza) or the north (Haría): you’ll be closest to trails, viewpoints, and whitewashed villages, with calmer nights.
Should I choose Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, or Costa Teguise to minimize driving time?
To minimize driving, the best choice depends on your plans. Puerto del Carmen is the most central: you can quickly reach the volcanic park, the north coast, the east, and the south, which reduces driving time if you want to see everything. Costa Teguise is also well located, especially if you plan to explore the north and east (viewpoints, villages, windy beaches), with easy access to Arrecife and the airport. Playa Blanca is ideal if your trip revolves around the south (Papagayo, trips to Fuerteventura, relaxing), but it increases distances to the north and the interior.
Is it better to choose a hotel or a self-catering apartment in Lanzarote?
The right choice depends on your pace and your budget. A hotel works well if you want to switch off: breakfast is ready, housekeeping is included, sometimes half board, and useful services (pool, reception, parking). It’s comfortable for a short stay or if you plan to be out during the day. A self-catering apartment is often more flexible and budget-friendly, especially for families or for a week: you set your own schedule, you can make picnics, and cut down on restaurant costs. It’s also handy if you like shopping locally (fish, fruit, cheeses) and having a quiet dinner.
Where should I stay in Lanzarote to enjoy the most beautiful beaches without sacrificing peace and quiet?
To combine beaches and tranquility, the south is generally the best option. Around Playa Blanca, you can choose accommodation slightly set back from the seafront: you’ll still have quick access to the Papagayo coves while avoiding the bustle of the busiest areas. Another option is to stay near Yaiza, in a village, and reach the coast in 15–25 minutes; you gain peace and charm at the cost of a few drives. If you prefer the east, look for small areas between the resorts, where you’ll find more peaceful apartments and villas.
Is it a good idea to change accommodation during the trip to experience different vibes?
Changing accommodation can be an excellent idea if you’re staying at least 7 to 10 days and want to vary the atmosphere. You can split it into two stops: a few nights in a seaside resort to enjoy the beaches, restaurants, and evenings, then a few nights in the interior or the north for peace and quiet, volcanic landscapes, villages, and hiking. This way you reduce back-and-forth driving and discover two very different sides of the island. However, for a short stay (3 to 5 days), it can cost you time (check-in/out, luggage, logistics).
