Where to stay in Tenerife?

Last updated on 13 May 2026

Choosing where to stay in Tenerife can be more complicated than it seems. Indeed, while the island looks small on the map, it's the largest of the Canarian archipelago. If you're planning to visit multiple islands, also consider our guide on where to stay in the Canary Islands. What's even more striking is the difference in scenery and climate between the north and the south of Tenerife. In fact, this is often what appeals to travelers who also enjoy wilder, volcanic islands like La Palma. In the south, you can enjoy limitless sun in hotels that are both affordable and luxurious around Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, and Los Cristianos. To the north, around Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna, the setting is more lush. You'll be facing the typical charm of the Canaries, we truly love this spot. For a change again, there are the famous cliffs of Los Gigantes, El Médano, and Santa Cruz, the island's capital. Trust us, you'll have lovely things to see and do in Tenerife.

In any case, there are places for all budgets and travel styles in Tenerife. In this article, you'll find out about the best areas to stay in Tenerife according to what suits you best: family, couples, luxury holidays, budget-friendly, etc. We've prepared this guide so you can make a good scouting of the areas that best suit your stay in Tenerife.

Which Area to Choose for Staying in Tenerife?

Before booking your accommodation, we advise you to take two minutes to get to know the main areas of the island better. It will help you avoid spending your days in a car or ending up in an environment that doesn't suit you.

South – Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas & Los Cristianos  : This is simply the most touristy area of the island. It's like a small sunny paradise all year long, with large black and golden sandy beaches and generally lively atmospheres. For better orientation, staying in Costa Adeje is the city of luxury with starred hotels. Playa de las Américas is just next door and offers much more accessible accommodations. However, we found the atmosphere there to be more lively and less family-friendly. Lastly, Los Cristianos is not too far either: it's the perfect southern compromise, with a village-like atmosphere and accommodations of all ranges. Overall, it's a well-developed and vacation-oriented area if you want to relax and just enjoy.

North – Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife North & La Laguna  : As we mentioned a bit earlier, the north of Tenerife is quite different from the south. We found it greener and more authentic, a true immersion into Canarian life. Puerto de la Cruz is the most touristic city in the north, and that's understandable. It's by the sea, with natural swimming pools and a delightful city center for strolling. The surrounding villages are quieter and nestled in nature. They are even more exotic. We also can't miss San Cristóbal de La Laguna, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's a magnificent city with colorful facades, offering a serene and local atmosphere (another favorite for us). If this kind of setting and ambiance is what you're looking for, go for it!

Other Areas – Santa Cruz, El Médano & Los Gigantes  : To our surprise, Santa Cruz is a lively and pleasant capital for a small island. It has its own charm with its museums and local side, although the industrial port might seem a bit dominant when you arrive. As for El Médano, it's clearly a haven for board sports like kitesurfing and surfing. It's a very windy area. Lastly, Los Gigantes is quite different. To set the scene, it’s a small seaside town organized around large cliffs reaching up to 600 meters. Even if it attracts tourists, there's a relaxed and friendly vibe spot that you instantly notice. Honestly, all these areas have something to offer; if you're hesitating between several, nothing stops you from changing accommodations during your trip!

Conclusion

If all goes well, you now have a good idea of the different places to stay in Tenerife. You should even have areas that stand out based on your preferences: the more touristy south, the more authentic north. That's the beauty of Tenerife. In one same island, it brings together different landscapes, atmospheres, and climates. That's what made us come back several times, and we're not the only ones.

Moreover, we even suggest not hesitating to change accommodations along the way if you like. This will allow you to dive into different settings and see all the faces of Tenerife. If, during your journey, you also plan to visit other islands of the archipelago, our guide on where to stay in the Canary Islands will be useful. It will be a valuable aid for planning your stay from A to Z. So, don't hesitate to use it; it's there for that! If you plan to travel across the archipelago, know that we've also devoted pages on the following topics: where to stay in Lanzarote, where to stay in La Gomera and accommodations in El Hierro.

FAQ - Where to stay in Tenerife

Should you choose the south or the north to stay in Tenerife depending on the season and the weather?

The choice mainly depends on your priorities. In winter and early spring, the south is generally more stable and sunny, with mild temperatures and little rain: ideal if you want to spend your days at the beach and by the pool. The north is greener, cooler, and more unpredictable, with more showers, but also a more local atmosphere and lush landscapes. In summer, the gap narrows: the weather is good everywhere, but the south can be hotter and drier, while the north remains pleasant, sometimes breezy.

Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas: what’s the difference in vibe and budget for a stay in Tenerife?

You’ll find two fairly different atmospheres, even though they almost blend into one another. Costa Adeje focuses on comfort: newer hotels, resorts, well-equipped beaches, more upscale restaurants, and a family-friendly vibe. Prices there are often higher, especially by the sea, but the quality of the infrastructure matches. Playa de las Américas is livelier: bars, nightlife, shopping centers, activities, and more accommodation options, from budget studios to 4-star hotels. Your budget can therefore be more flexible, but some areas are noisy in the evening. For a stay in Tenerife, choose Adeje if you prioritize calm, higher standards, and services, and Playa de las Américas if you want to go out, be on the move, and enjoy a good price-to-entertainment ratio.

Is it a good idea to change accommodation during a stay in Tenerife?

Changing accommodation can be an excellent idea if you want to reduce travel time and experience different atmospheres. You can go with a simple split such as 3–4 nights in a sunny seaside resort for relaxation, then 3–4 nights in a greener, more cultural town for hikes, villages, and sightseeing. It also helps you make the most of mountain roads without tiring back-and-forth drives. On the other hand, if your trip is short (4–5 nights), staying in one place prevents you from losing time to check-in/check-out and logistics.

Can you fully enjoy the island without renting a car by choosing the right base?

Yes, as long as you choose a well-connected base and accept a few limitations. Buses (Titsa) provide good links between the main towns, beach resorts, and the airport, and organized tours cover the must-sees (the volcano, the cliffs, whale and dolphin watching). A central, well-connected town will let you get around without stress, especially if you focus on beaches, restaurants, and city sightseeing. However, without a car, some remote hikes, little-visited coves, and high-altitude viewpoints become more complicated, with timetables and transfers to manage.

Which area should you choose for a more authentic and less touristy stay?

For a more authentic feel, opt for a historic town or a northern village, where life follows the rhythm of markets, squares, and cafés rather than hotel complexes. La Laguna is an excellent choice: colonial architecture, great local spots, a student vibe, and easy access to the Anaga mountains. Puerto de la Cruz also offers a more Canarian setting, with gardens, a seafront, traditional restaurants, and real neighborhood life, while still being practical for exploring nearby. If you like villages, look toward the La Orotava Valley: it’s quieter, often cheaper, and very beautiful.
