It had been a while since I’d taken the time to come back to Moorea. And yet, after already writing about where to stay in Tahiti and sharing quite a few articles about the island, I told myself it was time to put together a really complete guide to accommodations in Moorea.
In fact, if there’s one island that many people include in their itinerary in French Polynesia, it’s Moorea. Often right after Tahiti… and usually before or after Bora Bora. You have to say it has everything going for it: a stunning lagoon, mountains in the background, a laid-back vibe, and plenty to do without ever rushing around. As for me, I was lucky enough to go there several times during my 6 years in French Polynesia, and honestly I never got tired of it. A hike in the morning, snorkeling in the afternoon, a sunset in the evening… the days go by fast over there. Plus, it’s a pretty easy island to explore, with a gentle pace. It’s truly a change of scenery—it became a favorite!
Since Moorea is very touristy, there are lots of options… and that’s exactly what can sometimes make choosing harder. It’s an advantage, but you can also quickly get lost. You’ll find everything: well-known resorts, simple family-run guesthouses, vacation rentals, or small houses right on the water. So in this article, my goal is to share all my tips so you know where to stay in Moorea. Enough to make your life easier when choosing based on your budget, your travel style, and the areas that appeal to you most.
Are you planning your trip to French Polynesia?
We decided to make your life easier by creating our own travel guide, where everything is organized, categorized, and summarized. Save research time and start traveling already!

The best places to stay in Moorea
To guide you as best as possible in your search, I put together a selection of the accommodations I consider the best in Moorea. In this selection, there are some I’ve had the chance to try myself, and others that people close to me know well.
I organized the addresses by budget, because that’s usually what helps the most when planning a trip to French Polynesia. Whether you’re traveling on a tight budget, looking for comfort, or planning a more indulgent stay, you should find what you’re looking for.
Of course, I had to make choices in this selection. As I was saying, there are many accommodations on the island and I can’t list them all here. And if you want to go further, I also invite you to take a look at the other articles I’ve written about Moorea, especially those dedicated to guesthouses or hotels. That will give you a more complete overview of the options available to you.

The best budget places to stay in Moorea
Let me reassure you right away: it’s absolutely possible to find affordable accommodations in Moorea. Of course, we’re far from luxury hotels, but you can still find a few accessible places, especially in guesthouses or vacation rentals. These are great solutions to enjoy the island without blowing your budget. In fact, it’s often this type of accommodation that I recommend to those who want to travel longer in French Polynesia, or who prefer to prioritize activities over lodging. And honestly, sleeping in a local guesthouse is also a great way to have a more authentic experience.
Fare Temanea
If you’re looking for a guesthouse in Moorea that’s comfortable, well located, and truly has a “feel at home” vibe, Fare Temanea has a great chance of appealing to you. It’s on the Tiahura side, in one of the most pleasant areas of the island. You’ll be close to beautiful beaches, restaurants, and several activities. The welcome is really friendly. The owners take the time to chat and often share valuable tips about the island. It sets the tone right away.
As for the lodging, it’s an independent bungalow—simple but well equipped—with a bedroom, a private bathroom, and an outdoor kitchen. You’ll also enjoy a pool, Wi-Fi, a nice outdoor area, and even kayaks to enjoy the lagoon. Overall, the guesthouse is very well maintained. It’s the kind of place I’d recommend for 3 to 5 nights: comfortable enough to settle in, with a more local vibe than a big resort.
Haere Mai i te fare
If there’s one family-run guesthouse in Moorea that I’ve heard great feedback about, it’s this one. And that’s not very surprising. This is a true bed and breakfast the way we like them, with lush surroundings, a relaxed atmosphere, and above all a warm welcome. To help you locate it, it’s in Teavaro, just a few minutes from the ferry dock, the airport, and Temae Beach (it’s gorgeous!). So yes, the address is very well located.
The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and nicely decorated. If you ask me, you’ll quickly feel at home here. I almost forgot—there’s also an on-site restaurant. So you can have all your meals right there. There’s even a Tahitian brunch on Sundays. It’s a great chance to taste local cuisine. I can already tell you you’re going to love it! What I like about this kind of place is the simple, human side. You don’t come here only to sleep, but also to experience a little slice of Polynesia differently, with more interaction and more authenticity.
Moorea Vaiare Lodge
If you’re looking for a practical place to stay in Moorea, especially for a short stopover or a hassle-free stay, Moorea Vaiare Lodge is a name to keep in mind. The lodge is located near the ferry dock. So if you arrive loaded down from Tahiti, you can drop your bags right here. As for the rooms, they’re comfortable and well equipped. You won’t be missing anything. You’ll also have access to a shared kitchen area and pleasant outdoor spaces.
Another point that always makes you happy: the welcome and attentiveness of the host. Reviews are unanimous—the host is always attentive and available. I think that really makes the difference, especially on a first stay in Moorea. On the other hand, there’s no beach and no lagoon view; it’s more of a practical, well-located address. But in my eyes, it’s still a great option for exploring the island!
Fare Paloma Moorea
Head to the southwest coast of Moorea, near Atiha Bay, to discover the Fare Arana guesthouse! On the agenda: peaceful accommodations with a breathtaking lagoon view, all in a relaxed atmosphere. This is clearly a typical family-run guesthouse, run by Carole and Erick. You’ll immediately feel the warm, friendly vibe that’s so typical of Polynesia.
All the accommodations offer this lagoon view, which is a real plus. They have a simple but comfortable style. Plus, you’ll be slightly away from the most visited areas. It’s more pleasant for settling in and simply enjoying the idyllic scenery. What’s different from the previous guesthouses is the on-site restaurant. In the evening, there’s no need to go anywhere—you can eat right at the guesthouse, by the pool. Food lovers won’t be disappointed and can try local dishes. As for amenities, you’ll enjoy a pool, a garden, common areas, and even a fare pote’e (a wooden structure with a roof, but completely open, typical of Polynesia).
In short, Fare Arana is a guesthouse I recommend if you want to get a bit away from the tourist areas and enjoy some peace and quiet. Trust me, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy Moorea!

The best value-for-money stays in Moorea
After budget accommodations, I suggest moving slightly upmarket with places that offer a great balance between comfort, location, and price. In my opinion, this is often the best choice in Moorea, especially if you want to enjoy the paradise setting without blowing your budget. Let’s be honest: Moorea is still an island where prices climb quickly, especially as soon as you get closer to the waterfront or look for a bit more comfort. The idea here is to find addresses that offer a real Polynesian experience, without paying luxury resort rates.
Hôtel Fenua Mata’i’oa
I wanted to tell you about Hotel Fenua Mata’i’oa, because it’s clearly a one-of-a-kind address on the island of Moorea. Let me warn you: this is not a big hotel complex at all. It’s more like a small, charming hotel in a tropical garden, right on the lagoon, on the Tiahura side. What stands out right away about this property is its atmosphere. You feel like you’re in a cocoon, with beautiful decor in a lush environment. And above all, it has an intimate feel that you don’t find everywhere.
In fact, the suites are spacious and comfortable, with a private terrace and even an ocean view for some. At this hotel, the setting is on par with the comfort. You can even enjoy a small private beach. It’s definitely dreamy and it lets you head out for water activities like kayaking, snorkeling, or diving. In short, I recommend Fenua Mata’i’oa if you want to treat yourself without necessarily going for a very large luxury resort.
Moorea Island Beach Hotel
Located on the Haapiti side, right on the beach, this human-scale hotel checks a lot of boxes if you want a quiet, comfortable place to stay that’s well located for enjoying the lagoon. Once again, it’s not a big resort, but a small, intimate property. That’s exactly what makes it so charming. The accommodations are modern, well laid out, and comfortable. As a bonus, some offer a gorgeous ocean view. That’s not all!
You’ll have direct access to the beach, bikes available, a shared kitchen, and a very good breakfast. It’s a place that aims to be simple and no-frills, but it does the job very well. In short, if you absolutely want to be right on the lagoon at a reasonable price, you’re in the right place.
Fare Tokoau Moorea
For authenticity, peace and quiet, and a great location, I recommend Fare Tokoau. It’s beachfront with a really pleasant setting. To give you an idea, it’s in the heart of a lush garden with a small beach, a pool, and beautiful sunsets. As for the accommodations, as its name suggests, it offers traditional fares (all wood) with an ocean view from the balcony. It’s a great mix of natural scenery, Polynesian-style lodging, and a friendly welcome from the hosts.
People come here mainly to relax, enjoy the lagoon, and settle into the laid-back rhythm of Polynesia. And as I briefly mentioned, the location is just perfect. Basically, you’re close to Tiahura Beach, lots of restaurants, and well-known spots to enjoy the lagoon. To make the most of it, you’ll have kayaks available. The little extra that always makes you happy: the pool. In summary, it’s a great option if you like simple but charming places.

The best luxury hotels in Moorea
We’ll wrap up this selection with the most beautiful high-end hotels in Moorea. Clearly, we’re no longer talking about the same budgets, but if you’re dreaming of a stay with top-notch amenities and a truly exceptional setting, this is where you should look.
Many people choose this type of hotel for a honeymoon… and you quickly understand why. It’s true that in Moorea, some hotels offer an idyllic setting, with beautiful gardens, gorgeous beaches, spas, several restaurants and, for some, the famous overwater bungalows. For the record, it was in Moorea that we slept in an overwater bungalow for the first time. I can tell you it was a great experience. In my eyes, it’s something you should do at least once in your life! By the way, if you want to sleep in overwater bungalows in Bora Bora, we gathered the best addresses in a complete guide.
In the meantime, here are the most beautiful high-end hotels in Moorea—the ones I’d look at first if I wanted to treat myself on the island.
Hilton Moorea Hôtel resort & spa
We’re starting strong with the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa. This 5-star hotel, whose reputation speaks for itself, is located between the famous Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. The setting alone already sets the tone. The property offers several categories of rooms and bungalows, but it’s especially the overwater bungalows that make people dream. Honestly, waking up with the lagoon right under the terrace remains a great memory.
If your budget allows, some bungalows even include their own private pool. Otherwise, the garden-side or beach-side accommodations are also beautiful options, often more accessible. As for services, this is a true resort: large pool with a view, private beach, spa, gym, restaurants, bars, kayaks, paddleboarding, snorkeling… it’s all there.
We agree—the Hilton is a high-end address with high rates. It’s not the most budget-friendly option in Moorea. But if you’re dreaming of a beautiful stay, an overwater bungalow, or an unforgettable trip to French Polynesia, it’s a safe bet.
Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea beach resort
Another great address on the island! Its location is truly ideal: set on Temae Beach (which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Moorea). For that alone, the property is worth it! The setting is simply stunning with the lagoon, a beautiful white-sand beach, and the view of Tahiti in the distance. The hotel offers several categories of villas and, of course, overwater bungalows. Plenty to enjoy direct access to the water!
On site, you’ll find a high level of comfort and service with attentive staff. You’ll also enjoy two restaurants, a beautiful pool, a spa, and several activities available on site. In my opinion, this hotel is a good alternative to the Hilton. If you want to enjoy an exceptional setting and high-end amenities at slightly lower rates, you can come here. Of course, staying at Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort is still a budget!
Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea
This is the choice I’d recommend to those who want to treat themselves in Moorea without necessarily going all the way up to the highest rates of the Hilton or the Sofitel. We’re clearly still talking about a beautiful high-end hotel, with a superb setting, very good amenities, and above all a value for money that I find really interesting for this level of quality.
Plus, we had the chance to try it ourselves for a few days, so I can tell you we had an amazing time there. The hotel is located on the Maharepa side, in the north of the island, which is pretty convenient for visiting Moorea. You’re not too far from the dock, shops, restaurants, and the island’s main activities.
The setting is really pleasant, with a large infinity pool, a tropical garden, a pretty beach, and of course the famous overwater bungalows. So yes, the lagoon right in front is a bit less spectacular than the one at the Sofitel or the Hilton. It’s a bit deeper, a bit less turquoise in places. But careful—it’s still beautiful and more than enough to enjoy the setting and have a great time. The bungalows are beautiful, comfortable, decorated in an elegant Polynesian style. If you go for a premium overwater bungalow, you’ll clearly have a great view of the lagoon and the mountains in the background. And honestly, at sunset, the setting is just wow!
To keep it simple, I’d say the Manava is an excellent compromise and clearly an address I recommend without hesitation. If you want to know more, I wrote my review of the Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea in a dedicated article. You’ll find all the details of my few nights on site. It can help you make your choice! In any case, that’s what it’s for, so don’t hesitate!

We’ve covered the best accommodations in Moorea. I hope you enjoyed this guide and that it helped you make your final choice! As I often say, if you’re coming to French Polynesia, you absolutely have to stop in Moorea. For me, it’s still one of my favorite islands in the archipelago. Even though it’s becoming more and more touristy, I think it has still kept its authentic side—what I like to call the “real” Polynesia.
To organize your trip in the archipelago, I also wrote an article dedicated to accommodations in French Polynesia. To make your life easier, I organized them by island. Trust me, it will be much simpler for you! In any case, I really enjoyed writing about Moorea again, because I often received questions on the topic.
