Hello everyone! This time, I’m taking you to the Fakarava atoll in the Tuamotu! Lately, I’ve been writing again about Polynesia, notably to prepare accommodation guides for you. The aim here is to make things easier by giving you the best places to stay in Fakarava. A little more about this atoll: it has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so you can imagine the many marine species waiting to be discovered. In other words, it’s THE paradise for divers! It’s also famous for its two passes, North and South, where the waters are incredibly rich. For reference, the atoll lies 450 km from Tahiti.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit twice, including once on a catamaran cruise in the Tuamotu (I have a great contact for that!). It let me discover all the essentials of the atoll. I can tell you Fakarava is truly worth the trip! It’s even considered one of the world’s most beautiful dive sites for spotting manta rays, hammerhead sharks (impressive!) and much more. I have wonderful memories. If you’re heading to the Tuamotu, I also recommend stopping for a few days at Rangiroa and Tikehau, two more atolls perfect for diving in stunning turquoise lagoons.
In short, the goal of this article is to share the best accommodation in Fakarava. From lodges and family‑run guesthouses to campsites, you’ll have plenty of choice for a stay here! A word of warning though: there are no large hotel resorts or over‑water bungalows. You can enjoy that kind of luxury in Rangiroa instead!

Where to stay in Fakarava? The best areas to stay
As I mentioned, as soon as you set foot on Fakarava you quickly realise you’re far from the 5‑star hotels found elsewhere in Polynesia. Here, simplicity, tranquillity and authenticity are the priorities. Personally, that’s what I prefer and what I see as the “real” Polynesia—it adds charm to the atoll.
Most accommodation available is run by locals in idyllic surroundings. When it comes to the best areas to stay, you mainly have three options:
- Rotoava, in the north of the atoll: this is the main village and the heart of the activity. It’s true that most accommodation is here, mainly family guesthouses. The location is ideal for being close to amenities and the North Pass for dive sessions. It’s a very good base for exploring the atoll and the surrounding motus.
- Tetamanu, in the south: at the opposite end of the atoll, the vibe is completely different—wilder and more rugged. You feel like you’re at the end of the world! As you can guess, there is far less accommodation in the south. It’s often perfectly placed for diving the South Pass. If you really want to disconnect, there’s nothing better!
- Private motus: for even more peace and exclusivity, there are a few places to stay on private motus. No noise, no neighbours, just the lagoon and coconut palms. That, in my view, is true luxury!
The best accommodation in Fakarava
I may repeat myself, but staying in Fakarava means travelling differently. We’re far from all‑inclusive resort hotels. The atoll primarily offers an authentic getaway far from mass tourism. You’ll be fully immersed in the local culture, with family‑run guesthouses, lodges (with higher‑end amenities) and campsites. In any case, you’ll often sleep beside Fakarava’s magnificent crystal‑clear lagoon. It’s the chance to live to the rhythm of dives and, of course, sunsets—super enjoyable!

Lodges in Fakarava : comfort & high‑end services
We can all agree that, even though Fakarava is a largely unspoilt destination, some properties stand out. I’m thinking mainly of the lodges, which offer greater comfort while keeping the natural environment. Most are wooden and set in a paradise setting! I think it’s a good alternative if you want a more comfortable experience while staying in the Polynesian spirit.
Havaiki Lodge
Let’s start strong with this little haven of peace: Havaiki Lodge. On the lagoon’s edge, this family lodge offers 16 bungalows. Some are on the white‑sand beach, others in the tropical garden. It’s the kind of place where you disconnect and taste local cuisine. The lodge also has a superb pearl farm—the oldest on the atoll.
Activities abound: diving, snorkelling, bike rides, excursions to the pink‑sand motus—you won’t see time pass!
Travellers particularly appreciate the meals and friendly atmosphere, as if you were at home. In short, it’s a charming lodge that combines simplicity and conviviality in the heart of Polynesian nature.
KoriKori Lodge Fakarava
In the north of Faka, very close to the main village, you’ll find KoriKori House! It’s a superb guesthouse on the lagoon, ideal for enjoying the atoll in complete tranquillity. It has spacious modern bungalows with an equipped kitchen, private bathroom, terrace and outdoor shower—you’ll want for nothing! Its main asset is its setting just for you, with its private beach—truly dreamy!
The hosts give you a warm welcome and are always available. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate! They know the atoll like the back of their hand and can share their priceless tips. For meals, half‑board is available with tasty dishes from the KoriKori snack bar! To make life even easier, there’s private parking and an airport shuttle. Everything is designed so you can make the most of your stay. Honestly, if you’re looking for somewhere authentic while keeping your independence, this lodge is perfect! I’m pretty sure you won’t want to leave, haha.

Fafapiti Lodge Fakarava
Heading south of the atoll to Fafapiti Lodge! Discover this cocoon in the heart of nature, right by the pass for diving! On site, this family lodge offers three very comfortable bungalows, all well laid‑out and, above all, with a magnificent sea view. From the warm welcome by Valérie and René, you immediately feel the friendly atmosphere. Plus breakfast and dinner are home‑cooked—a real treat for food lovers.
To explore the surroundings, kayaks, bikes, masks, snorkels and sun loungers are provided so you can enjoy this beautiful setting to the full. For your information, the lodge is eco‑friendly: electricity is entirely solar and they favour short supply chains. That’s a real plus! You’ve got it: don’t miss this address if you want to stay in the most peaceful part of Fakarava.
Fareana Lodge Bungalow ho'e
Here’s an independent holiday home that’s perfect if you want a getaway in complete privacy and calm! You’ll be just metres from the turquoise lagoon, in a modern, cosy 40 m² lodge. Inside it has one bedroom, a bright living room, a well‑equipped kitchen and, to top it all, an open terrace facing the sea.
Outside, there’s a barbecue and dining area so you can enjoy the natural setting. The place is perfectly peaceful and well maintained. The hosts see to every detail so you lack nothing! Here too, snorkelling gear, kayaks and bikes are available. In short, this lodge promises a superb experience—the perfect combo of tranquillity, modern comfort and heavenly surroundings. Tempted?

If you’re looking for a guesthouse, there are plenty to choose from in Fakarava. It’s the most common type of accommodation on the atoll. Moreover, staying in a guesthouse is a great way to immerse yourself in local life and share experiences with Polynesians. There are lots of advantages! Not to mention that it’s often the most economical option. In short, you can enjoy an idyllic stay in Fakarava without breaking the bank!
Fare Tua - Meko et Kito
In the heart of Rotoava, Meko and Kito invite you to stay in their small seaside house. The house is located right across from the lagoon and features a breezy terrace and a garden lined with coconut trees. Inside, there is a double bedroom, a modern living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a private bathroom and free Wi-Fi, which is quite rare on the atoll.
Ideally located in the heart of the village of Rotoava, Fare Tua – Meko et Kito is perfect for those who want to experience Fakarava with complete independence. With a terrace facing the lagoon, a coconut tree garden and breathtaking ocean views, it’s the perfect place to relax.
A special mention goes to the hosts, who make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. In short, if you’re looking for a quiet place close to all amenities, look no further!
Alaroots Fakarava
This establishment lives up to its name — you’ll soon understand why! It’s a youth hostel that offers an authentic and welcoming experience with a down-to-earth vibe. It is known for its welcoming atmosphere, which encourages guests to meet and mingle with locals and other travellers. The hosts welcome guests like old friends with flower necklaces and stories about local life. They even offer weaving and fishing workshops, providing a real Polynesian immersion experience.
In terms of accommodation, you can choose between rooms and tents, and there is a shared kitchen, dining area and lush garden. As you can see, this hostel offers a stay focused on sharing and good vibes, and it’s close to the lagoon too.
Pension Vekeveke Village
Just a few kilometres from Rotoava, overlooking the famous lagoon, is the Pension Veke Veke Village. You can choose from eight traditional bungalows, each with a private bathroom. You’ll have direct access to the sea while being close to local snack bars, such as KoriKori, which I mentioned earlier — you’re in for a treat!
If you want to explore the atoll, you can borrow kayaks and snorkelling equipment, or join organised excursions on the lagoon which take you past pink sand beaches and the South Pass. You can also rent bikes or cars from the guesthouse. All in all, this guesthouse offers many advantages for stays with family, as a couple or in small groups!
Pension Tokerau Village
We venture 7 km away from the main village to discover this charming guesthouse! Once again, we find ourselves on the edge of the magnificent Fakarava lagoon.
For the record, this family-run guesthouse has been open since 2003 and has already welcomed quite a few travellers. It has been awarded two Tiare stars for offering good comfort at a reasonable price. Always good to know! There are four comfortable bungalows with terraces overlooking the garden and the lagoon.
Meals are shared, so you can enjoy spending time together! What’s more, they are made exclusively from local produce. This is your chance to sample Polynesian cuisine — I recommend the raw fish in coconut milk, which is delicious! Oh, and the guesthouse lends out kayaks and offers bike rentals too! In short, you won’t be disappointed if you choose this guesthouse!

Pension Vaiama Village
Pension Viaima invites you to experience Fakarava from the comfort of your own private haven overlooking the sea. You will be right by the water on a white-sand beach with a lit-up pontoon. The farés (traditional huts) here are simple yet offer all the necessary comforts. Your hosts, Dahlia and Jean-Jacques, are extremely welcoming. They offer shared meals in a large shaded area under one of the farés, overlooking the crystal-clear lagoon.
Speaking of which, you can go snorkelling, fishing or kayaking to see tropical fish, manta rays and much more besides! This guesthouse is surrounded by nature, calm and authenticity, and invites you to discover Fakarava and its gentle way of life.
Pension Paparara
We arrived at the guesthouse where I had stayed on both previous visits to Fakarava. Located on the edge of the lagoon in a peaceful setting, the place immediately exudes a friendly and warm atmosphere. As expected, the food was excellent: typically Polynesian and based on fresh fish from the Tuamotu Islands.
The bungalows are simple yet comfortable. You won’t want for anything! The location is just perfect, too! You can easily go to the beach, go snorkelling or diving, or go on excursions. There’s even a diving centre right next door. As you can imagine, I went back a second time because Paparara is the perfect place to visit the atoll.
Kaipolanie garden
Since late 2019, this guesthouse has been welcoming guests just outside the village of Rotoava. Surrounded by a tropical garden, you can enjoy one of two bungalows.
To give you an idea, they are quite spacious and comfortable, perfect for couples or small families. Each has a modern bathroom, a double bed, a single bed, and, best of all, a private garden with a terrace. As a bonus, half-board is included in the price. You’ll be served 100% homemade dishes—the best!
What’s more, you can choose to eat with your hosts or in complete privacy. You can always alternate between the two! In terms of location, you’ll be close to the beach, shops, and a diving club. For all these reasons, Kaipolanie Garden is an excellent starting point for visiting the atoll and its magnificent lagoon! You’ll see, I’m almost certain you’ll be delighted!
Tetamanu village
If you want to get off the beaten track, head south of Faka! You’ll feel as though you’re in your own world at the Tetamanu Village & Sauvage guesthouse. It is located in the old village of Tetamanu. There are five beach bungalows and one garden bungalow. All of the bungalows overlook the superb Tumakohua Pass, a great spot for scuba diving.
The accommodation is simple and blends in well with the natural surroundings. Each has a private shower and toilet. As an added bonus, the guesthouse restaurant is right on the pass. Imagine enjoying spectacular sunsets during dinner!
Given its location, it’s a diver’s paradise, offering the chance to observe sharks, corals and many other marine species. Even if you stay on the surface, the crystal-clear water allows you to see the marine life. In short, it’s the perfect place to experience the atoll in all its unspoilt beauty!
Raimiti
Stay at the Raimiti guesthouse in the south of the atoll! Nestled between the reef and the lagoon, it’s the perfect place to unwind completely. You’ll be far from everything: there’s no permanent electricity or TV, and you’ll be surrounded by nature in this natural paradise. There are two wooden bungalows on site, and their names might make you smile: Fare Crusoé and Fare Robinson. Both are well-appointed and comfortable.
An added bonus is that you’ll be welcomed like a member of the family into a really friendly atmosphere. You’ll share meals with your hosts, which will give you a real insight into local life! If you’re looking for a unique and authentic experience, Raimiti is the place for you!
Motu Aito Paradise
Also located in the south, in Tetamanu, this guesthouse offers a wonderful experience, particularly for nature and diving enthusiasts. It boasts eight traditional bungalows right on the beach. Specifically, there are two garden bungalows, two lagoon bungalows on stilts and four suites. The main attraction is the diving club, which is perfect for exploring the seabed of Fakarava.
As you know, diving works up an appetite! You can enjoy delicious Polynesian dishes made with fresh fish. In short, Motu Aito Paradise offers everything you need for a getaway in the heart of nature: authenticity, tranquillity and direct views of the lagoon.

Campsites in Fakarava: a nature experience on a budget
After the family guesthouses, I’m offering a final section on camping in Fakarava. If you want to be even closer to nature, often with your feet in the sand, this is a great option! There are plenty of other advantages to choosing a campsite: a friendly atmosphere, affordable rates and true immersion in Polynesian life. So, let me introduce you to 3 campsites on Fakarava Atoll.
Camping Tetamanu at Sab's
In the south of Fakarava, this is the only campsite in the area! At Sab’s, you come for an unusual and authentic stay in the village of Tetamanu. Here, you can camp with your own tent and gear, or rent them on‑site along with the pitch. If you prefer to sleep indoors, Sabrina, the campsite host, offers a small room.
But if you’re here to be fully immersed in nature, you’ll sleep on the beach to the gentle lapping of the lagoon. We can agree it’s a wonderful experience to recharge and enjoy this dream setting!
And Sabrina is a great host: she welcomes you with a smile and is always available. Clearly, this campsite is for travelers who want a different experience, enjoying nature with a little less comfort.
Camping Tekopa Village
Just 6 km from Faka’s main village, Tekiopa Camping & Lodge is ideal if you’re looking for a simple vacation in the heart of nature. At this campsite, you can choose between pitching your tent facing the lagoon or sleeping in one of the 3 bungalows (including a family one for 4 people). As for facilities, unsurprisingly they are simple but practical. You’ll have access to shared bathrooms, a communal kitchen and a fare — a real living space where you spend time with locals and other travelers.
In fact, it’s often the warm, welcoming atmosphere that people remember when they stay at this campsite. Perfect for creating great memories! Special mention to the sunsets over the lagoon: you can’t get any closer to admire them.
For your information, Tekiopa is also a good base for getting around the atoll. You can rent bikes or arrange transfers to the airport. You’ve got it: this campsite is an excellent option for traveling on a budget while enjoying the authenticity and beauty of the setting!
Relais Marama
If you prefer to camp in the village of Rotoava to be close to amenities, Relais Marama is the place for you! In fact, this guesthouse offers two types of accommodation: beachfront bungalows with terraces and pitches where you can pitch your tent. Because yes, you can’t rent camping gear here, so you’ll need to bring your own.
As I was saying, you’ll be in the center of the main village with easy access to shops, snack bars and dive clubs. At the guesthouse, you’ll have a shared kitchen to prepare your lunches and dinners. In the morning, no hassle: breakfast is included. Honestly, this guesthouse has many advantages: idyllic setting, great value for money and a friendly atmosphere.
As you’ve seen, the convenient thing is that the three campsites are located in three different areas of the atoll. I think that’s a good thing, and you’ll probably choose your campsite based on its location.
This guide to the best accommodations in Fakarava is coming to an end! We can agree: you’re not short of options to find your perfect spot on this superb atoll.
It really all depends on the kind of stay you’re looking for. If you want a certain level of comfort, close to that of a hotel, then a lodge will be perfect. If you prefer to be closer to Polynesian life, choose a family guesthouse. And if you’re after a more unusual and economical stay, camping is an excellent option.
One last tip: because Fakarava is known for its dive spots, remember to book your accommodation in advance!
If you plan to stay longer in the Tuamotus, I recommend reading our accommodation guides for Rangiroa and Tikehau. They’ll save you time in your search!
See you very soon for more tips on Polynesia!
