Hello, here I am again with an article about… Tahiti! As you know, we already wrote a complete guide to accommodations in Polynesia. I realized that an article on where to stay in Tahiti (the main island) is really essential. So, here it is! Tahiti was our home for six years with Mélanie and the kids! We had time to go all around it and we even shared all the activities to do on the island of Tahiti. We also had the chance to discover several beautiful places to stay on the island. The advantage is that there’s everything: from family guesthouses to luxury hotels! In my opinion, whatever your expectations, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Even though I know few travelers really devote time to Tahiti, it remains the entry point to Polynesia. So, if you’re up for spending a few days or more, this article should interest you!
You know us, we mainly base ourselves on our own experience or that of our loved ones! It’s a good way to share our good tips and above all our impressions with you. As I was saying, in Tahiti, you’ll find accommodations suited to all budgets.

Why choose Tahiti for your vacation in Polynesia?
If you’re still hesitating to spend time in Tahiti, know that it will be your point of arrival, right in the heart of the Polynesian archipelago. That’s where the international airport is, and it’s a convenient location for traveling to other islands in Polynesia. To give you a better idea of the island, know that it’s not just a transit point. In fact, it’s full of magnificent landscapes such as: turquoise lagoons, black sand beaches, mountains, discreet waterfalls, and so on! You see, the Tahitian island is full of lovely surprises! For example, the interior is still preserved and wild, a paradise for hikers. Along the coast, there are beautiful beaches for moments of swimming or relaxing. Culture-wise, it’s in Papeete, the capital, that you’ll feel the local vibe the most, notably with its colorful, artisanal market.
If you want my opinion, a few days in Tahiti make an excellent start to your trip to Polynesia, before heading to islands that are more well-known or, on the contrary, more authentic. To me, it’s worth making Tahiti your first stop: it will already be a change of scenery and varied. So, convinced? If so, don’t hesitate to keep reading! I also invite you to read our guide on the island of Tahiti, you’ll find everything you need there!

Where to stay in Tahiti : the best areas to stay
Now that you’ve decided to devote a bit of time to Tahiti, I suggest finding the right place to stay on the island. It mainly depends on the vibe and the type of stay you’re looking for! Here are the options available to you:
- Papeete : the capital, a must-see, but also a central and convenient base. It’s ideal for discovering both the west coast and the east coast. Plus, you’ll be at the heart of the buzz and local life, while being close to shops, restaurants, the market and more! On the other hand, the city center can be a bit noisy, that’s part of the deal.
- Punaauia : for a quieter, seaside setting, head for the west coast! This is where you’ll find beautiful hotels and magnificent beaches with lagoon. It’s a rather quiet area but remains more touristy. You can imagine, the vibe is rather family-friendly, like a seaside resort. You therefore feel less of the island’s local atmosphere here, even if it’s still a pleasant area to stay in.
- Mahina / Arue : if you prefer a more authentic vacation, the northeast coast is great. It’s less frequented by tourists; you’ll enjoy a good immersion in Polynesian culture. Plus, you’ll be very close to the magnificent Pointe Vénus beach. By the way, I recommend you read our article on the most beautiful beaches of Tahiti.
- Peninsula of Tahiti Iti : for a more nature/adventure experience, this place will suit you for sure. Indeed, it’s a wild, lush area where it’s cooler. This is where you’ll find the famous Teahupo’o wave (one of the best surf spots in the world!). It’s also a very good location for setting off on hikes or on the sea to observe whales, in the right season. We have even written an article dedicated to where to stay on the Tahiti peninsula.
We agree, Tahiti offers very different areas from one another. I’d even say that’s what makes it so charming! Whether you’re looking for luxury, a local immersion or a nature adventure, Tahiti will welcome you as it should!
The best accommodations in Tahiti
Unlike other Polynesian islands, in Tahiti, there really is something for everyone and every budget. It ranges from a luxury hotel on the lagoon to a family guesthouse for a more authentic experience. You’ll easily find the lodging that suits you. Plus, as we saw above, each part of the island has its charm and its addresses for a successful stay in Tahiti!
High-end accommodations in Tahiti : for a luxury experience
If you dream of a luxury stay in a paradisiacal setting, this section should interest you! Tahiti offers several high-end hotels. Between villas with private pools, spas, gourmet restaurants, everything is designed to discover Tahiti in luxury mode. Come on, I’ll let you discover a few standout hotels to treat yourself!
Hilton Hotel Tahiti
Let’s start with the famous Hilton Hotel Tahiti! True to the Hilton chain, this 4-star complex offers a breathtaking view of the lagoon. Its high-quality facilities, like its outdoor pool, its luxury rooms/suites, its spa, its gym and its restaurant, live up to its standing. You’ll have plenty to enjoy on site! Plus, the atmosphere is pleasant, perfect for recharging. To tell you more about the rooms/suites, they accommodate between 2 and 3 people, including a family one. Some even offer a superb ocean view and a “kitchenette” (well, it’s more like a large modern kitchen, ahah).
In terms of location, you’ll be between the port, the beaches, the shops and the restaurants, right in Papeete. It’s really practical for getting around the island and enjoying the capital’s entertainment. Between us, the Hilton in Tahiti is clearly a safe bet for a luxury stay.
InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa
From the moment you arrive at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, you’ll be enchanted by the setting: between a tropical garden and a turquoise lagoon with a view of Moorea. It sets the scene right away! The hotel is located in Fa’a’ā, just 5 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from downtown Papeete. In other words, it’s a good location to start (or end) your stay in the Polynesian archipelago.
As for the rooms, they are spacious and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the garden or the ocean. You can also enjoy two pools (including one with a sand bottom), a high-end spa, a gym and an overwater restaurant. The food is very good, and the sunset view is incredible! Not to mention the staff, who are very welcoming and attentive: it’s a real plus. Basically, if you choose this establishment, you’re sure to have a dream stay.
Te Moana Tahiti Resort
When we still lived in Polynesia, we had the opportunity to try the Te Moana Tahiti Resort (formerly Manava Suite Resort). It’s located in Punaauia, just 10 minutes from Tahiti airport. We spent 2 nights on site, in the lagoon suite, which has a separate bedroom, a spacious living room, an equipped kitchen and, to top it all off: a terrace. There are also other accommodation options: studios, apartments and different suites. In any case, you can enjoy an infinity pool facing the lagoon, and especially the Taapuna bar. Even before staying in this hotel, we had already come a few times to have a drink at this bar at sunset. It’s just magnificent, I recommend it!
We really appreciated the welcome from the staff, the hearty breakfast and the comfort of the hotel. Even though we’re in the urban part of the island, the hotel is surrounded by greenery: you feel good there. Frankly, we recommend the Te Moana Tahiti Resort, without hesitation! It’s a superb hotel in a beautiful setting, close to the airport. Given the services, the prices remain quite reasonable compared to other hotels on the island. If it tempts you, just remember to book in advance!
If you want to know more about our experience at the Te Moana Tahiti Resort, check out our dedicated article!
Le Tahiti By Pearl Resorts
To finish this selection, discover another 4-star hotel: Le Tahiti by Pearl Resorts. Located on Lafayette Beach, this establishment offers an incredible view of Matavai Bay, with a wild black sand beach, which is rather rare on Tahiti. So you might as well enjoy it! Here, they mainly offer suites with different levels of comfort. They are all spacious, with a terrace, and some even have a jacuzzi. The plus: you feel the Polynesian atmosphere combined with modern comfort.
In addition, travelers particularly appreciate the welcome from the staff: it’s a warm resort. Food-wise, there’s a seaside restaurant that is very good! And then, I’ll let you imagine the view during your meals. In terms of facilities, you’ll have access to a spa with treatments and massages, and even Tahitian dance classes. I think it’s pretty nice to offer activities linked to the local culture. In short, it’s an accommodation to keep in mind if you want to be in a calm setting while still being close to the city!

Mid-range accommodations in Tahiti : the compromise between comfort and budget
If you’re looking for the right balance between comfort and price, I think mid-range accommodations are a good option. These are very often family-run hotels that offer a good level of service without making you break the bank. Honestly, I think it’s the perfect compromise!
Royal Tahitien
Here we are at a hotel that offers good value for money, while being quiet and close to Papeete. The Royal Tahiti is located on the east coast, in Pirae, on the edge of a black sand beach. The advantage is that this beach is little-known and little-frequented: you’ll be in a peaceful spot. As for the rooms, they are large, simple but comfortable. Among them, some offer a large balcony with a view of the lush garden.
What stands out in the reviews: the green setting, the pool with a waterfall and, of course, the superb welcome from the staff! For your meals, the hotel’s restaurant is by the lagoon and offers good dishes. In addition, the setting is particularly beautiful at sunset! I admit, we’re not talking about a luxury resort, but about a simple, comfortable and well-located hotel.
Villa Hana'iki
This time, head for the peninsula of Tahiti Iti, with Villa Hana’iki. This vacation home is a real little cocoon for a stay with family or friends, far from the hustle and bustle of the capital. On site, no tourists, just calm, birdsong… and you, haha! To tell you about the place, it offers a lovely view of the lush garden and a private pool.
As for the villa, it is modern and well maintained, with a terrace to enjoy the outdoors. It can accommodate up to 8 people with its 69 m². You’re going to tell me it’s not huge, but it is well laid out: everyone will have their space. It has two large bedrooms, two bathrooms, an equipped kitchen and a pool table. You won’t lack anything! In short, this villa is perfect for a more local and intimate getaway.
Boutique Hotel Kon Tiki Tahiti
We’re back in Papeete with the Boutique Hotel Kon Tiki Tahiti! This modern, central and above all practical accommodation even lets you discover Papeete on foot. To situate it for you, it is right opposite the port, and therefore the ferries to Moorea. Back to the hotel: it sports a style that is both modern and Polynesian, while offering a direct view of the port or the capital from its balconies. The studios offered are comfortable, with nice decor. Some include a kitchenette; it can always be useful for preparing your meals!
As a bonus, on the rooftop, there is a bar-restaurant that offers an unobstructed view over the lagoon! It’s ideal for a drink or dinner at sunset. In summary, this 3-star hotel offers excellent value for money given its amenities and location. I suggest you take advantage of this good deal!
Vanylle Lodge
Located in Punaauia, Vanylle Lodge is a vacation home with 3 bedrooms for 8 people! It’s a great option if you’re traveling in a group, with family or friends. Set on the heights, this house reveals a beautiful panorama of the mountains and the lagoon. What’s more, it is well equipped: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a modern kitchen, a terrace, a barbecue area, and to top it all off: a private pool.
You’ll quickly feel at home there, but in the middle of tropical landscapes. Not to mention the fare pote’e, a Polynesian shelter in the garden. It’s great for outdoor meals! You’ll have gathered, you’ll have everything you need in this villa: you can set down your bags with your eyes closed!

Chez Karine et Robert
Welcome to the villa Chez Karine et Robert, on the heights of Punaauia! You will be simply facing Moorea, with a superb view over the translucent lagoon. The house is made to accommodate 2 to 4 people. It’s therefore a good choice for a stay as a couple or with the little family. It is well laid out, air-conditioned, with a full kitchen, a living room and a bedroom opening onto the outdoor area. Not to mention the infinity pool, which looks directly onto the ocean. A real postcard landscape! The atmosphere is ideal for recharging, with that feeling of being at home, even at the other end of the world. The hosts are always available and discreet, wonderful encounters for travelers.
Lastly, the vacation home is just 10 minutes from the airport and close to the beaches, restaurants and the Tahiti museum. Ultimately, we’re looking at an accommodation that combines comfort and panoramic views, to be discovered at the pace of Polynesia.
Fare Arearea
We arrive at a little corner of paradise on the east of the island of Tahiti! Fare Arearea is located on the edge of a black sand beach, surrounded by a lush garden. And as its name suggests, it’s a traditional Polynesian bungalow. With its 30 m², the fare is small, but very well laid out and equipped. It is air-conditioned and comfortable, with a full kitchen and a private terrace. Right next door, there is a shared fare pote’e to share a meal outdoors.
But the difference here is the hosts’ welcome: they are super nice and warm. Many travelers keep a very good memory of their visit here. And then, the environment is perfect for a stay in the heart of nature, between sea and mountain!

That’s what gives this sense of calm and disconnection. The rooms are simple but comfortable and clean. The hosts, Martine and Cyril, pay attention to every detail so you’ll have an excellent stay at the guesthouse.
You’ll enjoy a good, hearty breakfast made with fresh products: the perfect way to start the day before setting off on an adventure. There’s also an outdoor pool you can enjoy.
