After the guide to accommodation in Tahiti, here’s one on the places where to stay on the Tahiti Peninsula. We get a lot of requests about this area of the island—it’s true it’s increasingly popular. And it’s easy to see why! For our part, during our 6 years in Tahiti, we loved going to the peninsula because it’s calmer, greener, and cooler than the rest of Tahiti. To tell you everything, we often went there to swim, go hiking, and even head up to the Taravao Plateau (up there, you almost feel like you’re in Normandy with all the greenery and cows—if you forget the temperature, haha). By the way, even the town of Taravao is quiet, and above all a very good spot for watching cetaceans and diving. Honestly, I can only recommend going to Tahiti Iti: it’s a change! I’d even say it’s one of the must-sees in Tahiti.
Clearly, the aim of this article is to share our best tips on the Tahiti Peninsula. It’s a place that’s really worth the trip! I’m sure you’ll appreciate its tranquility. You’re starting to know me: I share places that my loved ones and I have been lucky enough to try to give you our feedback.
Also, if you haven’t read it yet, we wrote a very comprehensive article on the best accommodations in Polynesia. You’ll find our top recommendations there: by archipelago and by island.

Why choose Tahiti for your vacation in Polynesia?
As I was saying just above, the peninsula is much calmer than Tahiti. If you want to discover another side of Tahiti—more authentic and natural, off the beaten path—you’re really going to love the peninsula. Life moves more gently here: there are small communes and wild landscapes. It’s surely for all these reasons that Tahiti Iti is attracting more and more travelers.
To give you a better idea, the peninsula is a part of Tahiti that remains preserved and wild, because the coastal road ends on both sides. You reach Tautira in the north and Teahupo’o in the south; beyond that, the rest of the coast is done on foot or by boat. And that’s what offers a real feast for the eyes: between lush valleys and deserted bays, you almost feel alone in the world—and it feels good!
To discover more of the peninsula, a boat is an excellent way. There are great outings at sea to do: cruise along the wild coast, explore sea caves, watch wildlife, see the coral gardens up close, and so on! Not to mention the famous Teahupo’o wave. It’s clearly a must, even if you don’t surf. You can see it from the lagoon or from land; it’s truly impressive!
If you want to swim in calm spots with almost no waves, the peninsula is full of lovely black-sand beaches. You can swim in total peace, with no one around (the dream!). If you want to learn more about the beaches of Tahiti, I recommend checking our dedicated article!
In short, Tahiti Iti goes hand in hand with a gentle vibe and wild scenery. It’s the perfect place for an authentic getaway and to disconnect!
The best areas to stay on the Tahiti Peninsula
To get to know the peninsula better, let’s take a quick overview of the best areas to stay. Here they are:
- Teahupo’o: unsurprisingly, it’s simply a surfers’ paradise—but not only… The atmosphere on site remains calm while giving you access to boat trips and sunsets over the lagoon. Basically, it’s a convenient location to enjoy the natural landscapes, even if you don’t surf!
- Vairao: fair warning: we’re switching to a completely different setting! Here you’ll be right between the north and the south of the island, between Teahupo’o and Tautira. In my opinion, it’s the perfect compromise between authenticity and “logistics.” You can easily visit everything without changing accommodation.
- Toahotu: the vibe is peaceful, with small beaches nearby. It’s a lovely place to be, far from the hustle and bustle, while being close to Taravao to do your shopping, for example. If your priority is tranquility, you can’t do better!
- Tautira: at the very end of the road on the north side, Tautira reveals raw landscapes: mountains, rivers, bays, and villages. There are very few buildings: nature predominates. It’s worth the trip! And if you like preserved places and hikes between valley and ocean, go for it!
- Taravao: it’s a bit of the “hub” between Tahiti Nui and the peninsula. You’ll be close to all amenities. It’s a handy base between the peninsula and Tahiti! I’d say it’s ideal for those who want to make life easier by being close to everything.
As you’ve seen, there are quite a few places to stay, even though we’re on the Tahiti Peninsula. I hope this quick tour has already given you a good overview!
One last thing before getting to the heart of the matter! Find the accommodations available on the peninsula directly on the following map:

The best accommodations on the Tahiti Peninsula
Rest assured, on the Tahiti Peninsula, you’ll find a bit of everything. It ranges from family-run guesthouses to lodges, all the way to bungalows on the lagoon. In terms of standards, it’s the same: you’ll find both high-end and more affordable accommodations. So I’ve made sure to select lodgings for all tastes and budgets. Alright, I won’t go on and on—I’ll let you discover it all!
High-end accommodations on the Tahiti Peninsula: hotels and private villas
In Tahiti Iti, you’ll find some lovely high-end addresses. Between lodges and private villas with beach access, you’ll have choices. In general, these are properties that offer exclusive settings to enjoy the wild side of Tahiti Iti. Without further ado, let me show you the stand-out accommodations!
Vanira Lodge
In Teahupo’o, discover Vanira Lodge, which ranks among the best places to stay in Tahiti Iti! It’s a guesthouse that offers an incredible view of the lagoon with, in the distance, the famous waves of Teahupo’o (that sets the tone right away!). Here, there are 9 bungalows inspired by the typical Polynesian fare: in wood and stone. You’ll have the choice between 3 different types of bungalows: the Fare Nature, simply open to the outdoors; the Fare Spa, with a jacuzzi overlooking the sea; and the Fare Terrace, with a private garden and kitchenette.
As for facilities and services, there’s plenty: two pools, restaurant, à la carte breakfast, free parking, and Wi-Fi at the restaurant. Add to that its exceptional and peaceful setting and the super warm welcome. Needless to say, availability at this lodge goes fast! So if it interests you, I recommend booking well in advance!
Motu Nono House
In Afaahiti, on the peninsula’s coast, Montu Nono House is a beachfront villa with a private beach and a view of the lagoon to match. I’ll let you imagine the setting! The vacation home is made to host 8 to 10 people, with its 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living room, a full kitchen, a terrace, and a lush garden. You can also enjoy a small fare by the sea, with a separate bedroom, an outdoor kitchenette, and a barbecue area (perfect for aperitifs or meals at sunset!).
That’s not all! You’ll also be lent 3 kayaks and snorkeling gear. You’ll have everything you need to enjoy this magnificent setting! For your information: pets are allowed. Location-wise, you’ll be close to all amenities: supermarket, restaurants, bakery. You’ll also have all the must-sees within easy reach. Honestly, if you’re traveling with friends or family, this vacation home is really worth it!
Le Village de Vairao
As its name suggests, this accommodation is located in Vairao, on the wild coast of the Tahiti Iti peninsula! This “village” includes several vacation homes on the lagoon, with a private beach and views of the sea or the mountain. The main difference between the villas is the number of bedrooms (one or two). Some even have a private pool. In all cases, the houses are well equipped: air conditioning, terrace, kitchen, and barbecue.
In addition, you’ll have access to two small pools and a fare pote facing the sea for cooking and eating at sunset. Between its calm, natural setting and its direct beach access, this property has everything going for it. If you ask me, you’ll have a superb stay there!
Villa Mitirapa
In Toahotu, Villa Mitirapa invites you to spend a vacation on the lagoon! To explain: there are two independent villas, each with 2 bedrooms and a private pool, and, above all, a sublime view of the sea or the mountain. They are both identical and side by side. It is possible to rent both if you’re traveling with a group!
Inside, you’ll find a living room, a modern kitchen, and a terrace. As a bonus, you’ll have direct access to the beach! I almost forgot: on site, there are also two restaurants and an optional breakfast, if you wish. In short, these villas offer great amenities for a family vacation or for two, while staying self-sufficient.

Omati Lodge
Head to Taravao to stay at Omati Lodge! Here, you’ll have a choice among several 2-bedroom villas/chalets with a contemporary and Polynesian style. Each accommodation has an equipped kitchen, a living room, and a large terrace. To top it off, depending on the option you choose, you’ll either have your own private pool or access to the 2 pools on the property. You’ll also either have a sea view or a mountain view. Outside, there’s free parking and a barbecue!
The little extra: excursions are offered from the lodge, such as hikes in the heights, snorkeling, diving, or even kayaking! One thing is certain: you won’t be bored! We agree: this lodge is an excellent option to enjoy the calm of the plateau and all the great amenities.
Here’s a little help to make your choice! It’s a table that brings together all the info on the accommodations presented.

Family-run guesthouses and good-value lodges are the very heart of Tahiti Iti. You can stay in a room or a bungalow—simple but comfortable—with homemade breakfast and gorgeous settings (by the lagoon, for example). It’s also a chance to be carried along by Polynesian hospitality, always warm and smiling!
Pension Reva
Pension Reva welcomes you to Teahupo’o! In reality, it’s a family-run, human-scale ecolodge set between a lush garden and the lagoon. In total, it has eight wooden bungalows, family or standard. They’re all surrounded by greenery to enjoy the calm and recharge. To delight your taste buds, I recommend the on-site restaurant, which serves local cuisine. It’s renowned across the island!
As for activities, there’s plenty to do! The team even organizes excursions for you if you’d rather be guided. What’s great is the proximity to the Teahupo’o spot to surf or at least see it once, haha. If you’re looking for a family vibe and a very natural setting, this is the place for you!
Kia Ora Lodge
In Afaahiti (Taravao side), Kia Ora Lodge is ideal for exploring the peninsula! This property offers studios, bungalows with kitchenette, and even a mixed dorm to travel on the cheap. Apart from the dorm, the accommodations have their own bathroom, a terrace/patio, and Wi-Fi. For those who fear the heat, some offer A/C!
In addition, you’ll have access to an outdoor pool, a garden, a lounge, and a shared barbecue. I’d say the real plus of this lodge is its location. It’s simple: you’re in a quiet area while being close to Taravao’s amenities. In the reviews, what stands out are the well-equipped studios, the warm welcome, and the very good value for money. Between us, it’s a great deal, so you might as well take advantage of it!
Te Mana Lodge
Still in Taravao, above Phaëton Bay, Te Mana Lodge is a large apartment just for you (80 m²). To give you an idea, it’s on the upper floor of a villa, with a terrace and a superb sea view. It has 2 double bedrooms, a living room with a small office area, a private bathroom, and a simple kitchen with everything you need. That’s not all! You’ll have access to on-site parking and an infinity pool. As a bonus: there’s a relaxation area with a pool table and several games, as well as a superb terrace.
Clearly, you come here for the tranquility and the panoramic view of the lagoon! I think it’s the ideal accommodation for families or couples who want good independence, in a preserved setting.
A Pueu Village
On the east coast of the peninsula, A Pueu Village includes several simple, typical fare on the lagoon. You’ll be literally a few meters from the water and the reef. Each fare (bungalow) has a kitchenette, a private bathroom, a double bedroom and, to top it all off, a terrace (perfect for sunsets!). The property also has a pool, a tropical garden, and direct access to the lagoon.
What stands out is simply the setting that’s both paradisiacal and peaceful. The hosts’ welcome is exceptional too. Indeed, Victor and Blandine are discreet while giving you the best advice. Note that you’ll be halfway between Teahupo’o, Vaipahi, the caves, and the waterfalls. So I recommend keeping this address in mind!

Vai Iti Lodge
We end this selection with Vai Iti Lodge! It’s a small guesthouse with a magnificent panorama of the ocean, in Afaahiti. On site, bright bungalows are offered between 36 m² and 49 m². As you can imagine, the largest bungalow is made to accommodate families. It has a queen-size bed with mosquito net, a sofa bed, a full kitchen, a bathroom, and a private terrace. You’ll also have access to a pool and a fare pote for breakfast.
You’ll be warmly welcomed by Laina and Cédric, who are always very attentive. Honestly, you won’t lack anything. This lodge perfectly combines a pleasant setting, a postcard-worthy view, and good value for money. I almost forgot: the location is less than 3 km from Taravao and its shops.
