It has been quite a while since I last wrote about Moorea. Still, if there is one island I almost always recommend for a trip to French Polynesia, it is definitely Moorea. People often think first of the hotels on the island, but there are also many guesthouses in Moorea. They are a great alternative for discovering Tahiti’s sister island. Between its turquoise lagoon, lush vegetation, and beautiful beaches, it really does feel like a paradise island. Even after several stays there, Mélanie and I always wanted to go back.
In my view, Moorea is clearly one of those places where you feel good right away. You come to enjoy the lagoon, explore the bays, hike inland, or simply slow down for a while. And when it comes to guesthouses, this is the option we recommend if you are looking for a stay that feels more authentic, warmer, and of course more affordable. Honestly, staying in a guesthouse in Moorea is a great way to discover another side of the island, one that feels more local and more human.
You know us by now: we are sharing the best guesthouses based on our own experience there, or on feedback from people close to us. And we are not just giving you a list; we are sharing all the tips that go with it. So, are you in?
Are you planning your trip to French Polynesia?

The best guesthouses in Moorea
As I was saying, even though people often think of big hotels and overwater bungalows, guesthouses should not be overlooked. In my opinion, they are often one of the best ways to discover the island, especially if you are looking for lodging with a little more charm, simplicity, and human connection.
On the island, you will find very different types of guesthouses. Each one has something to offer. Some focus on the setting, others on direct access to the lagoon, or even on beautiful mountain views. Others stand out for the quality of their welcome, their family atmosphere, or their excellent value for money. As you can see, there are guesthouses for every taste and every budget.
To explain my approach, I focused on the guesthouses we know, or those we have received very good feedback about. In this selection, you will therefore find the ones I consider to be the best guesthouses in Moorea. All right, I will leave it there and let you judge for yourself!

Linareva Moorea
On the west coast of the island, Linareva Moorea is a small, human-scale guesthouse set in a natural environment. Its big advantage is that it sits away from Moorea’s most touristy areas. In other words, if you are looking for peace and quiet, this is a very good place to start. The guesthouse offers around ten accommodations, most with a Polynesian wooden style, surrounded by vegetation and open to the outdoors. You get that authentic side that gives the “real” Polynesia, as I like to call it, so much of its charm.
As for the accommodations, you can choose between garden bungalows, studios, beach bungalows with lagoon views, or larger options like the beach suite or the family villa. Another strong point: every unit has either a kitchenette or a full kitchen. This is useful because there is no full restaurant on-site: breakfast is the main service, served directly on your terrace.
For activities, the guesthouse provides quite a few things free of charge: kayaks, outrigger canoe, bikes, snorkeling gear… plenty to enjoy the lagoon without necessarily booking excursions. Clearly, this is the kind of place I recommend if you want a quiet guesthouse in Moorea, good value for money, and a truly authentic feel.
Fare Edith
This time, we are looking at a simple guesthouse on Moorea’s west coast, in the Haapiti area. It is a good option if you want to stay in a quieter part of the island while keeping access to the lagoon and the coast. Fare Edith is a small property with just a few bungalows. To set the scene, everything is surrounded by flowers and greenery, and the atmosphere feels relaxed and family-friendly.
As for the bungalows, they are simple but well equipped, with useful amenities for an independent stay. It is perfect if you prefer to have your own space and manage part of your trip at your own pace. There are only a few fare; they all share the same spirit, but they are designed to accommodate couples, families, or small groups.
That is not all! Depending on what is available during your stay, you can also enjoy the lagoon and organize activities nearby. A nice touch: the place is well suited to a simple stay without the more impersonal feel of a large hotel. All in all, Fare Edith is a good guesthouse if you want value for money, a local atmosphere, and a quieter side of Moorea.
Poerani Moorea
If you are looking for a charming guesthouse with direct access to the lagoon, Poerani Moorea is a very good option. It is located in the Maharepa area, in a quiet setting, with shops and restaurants nearby. To give you a better idea, it is a small property set in a tropical garden. The atmosphere immediately sets the tone: vegetation, wood, Polynesian decor… everything is designed to make you feel good as soon as you arrive.
And above all, the main asset is its direct lagoon access with a private beach area. That is the dream in Moorea! For accommodations, you can choose between independent units, including suites and bungalows, all with a good level of comfort. Whatever you choose, you will have space, a terrace, and enough independence to enjoy your stay at your own pace.
By the way, a concierge service is available to help you organize activities or transfers. That is always a plus if you do not know the island yet. In short, Poerani Moorea is a safe bet for a successful stay in Moorea for all these reasons. So do not wait too long—availability can go fast.
Fare Arana
Head to Moorea’s southwest coast, near Atiha Bay, to discover Fare Arana! On the agenda: quiet accommodations with lagoon views, all in a relaxed atmosphere. Here, we are clearly talking about a typical family-run guesthouse. You immediately feel the warm, friendly vibe that is so typical of Polynesia.
The accommodations have a simple but comfortable style, and the setting is a real plus. You will be slightly away from the most visited areas, which makes it more pleasant if you want to settle in and simply enjoy the scenery. What sets it apart from some other guesthouses is the on-site restaurant. In the evening, there is no need to go anywhere: you can eat right at the guesthouse, by the pool. Food lovers can try local dishes too. As for amenities, you will enjoy a pool, a garden, common areas, and even a fare pote’e (a wooden structure with a roof but completely open, typical of Polynesia).
Clearly, Fare Arana is a guesthouse I recommend if you want to get a bit away from the tourist areas and enjoy some peace and quiet. Trust me, it is a great opportunity to enjoy Moorea!
Painapaopao Backpacker
As its name suggests, we are moving on to a guesthouse with simpler comfort, but also a more budget-friendly spirit. In any case, it is an address worth knowing. It is located between the famous Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, which is ideal for exploring Moorea at your own pace. Plus, you will be just a few minutes from Ta’ahiamanu Beach and close to several of the island’s must-sees. Small bonus: you have lagoon access just a few meters away.
Here, it is more of a hostel-style place where you can meet other travelers. The vibe is really nice. You can choose between two double units with private bathrooms and a mixed dorm with shared bathrooms, which is much cheaper. One of the strong points of this guesthouse is the large, well-equipped shared kitchen where you can prepare your meals. That is a real plus on the island because it helps you save on your restaurant budget.
You got it: this is a simple, accessible, and welcoming place where you can meet people and enjoy Moorea without breaking the bank. It is also one of the cheapest options compared to the guesthouses listed above. It would be a shame to miss out if this style of accommodation suits you!

Moorea Vaiare Lodge
This guesthouse lives up to its name: it is located in Vaiare, very close to the ferry dock. So if you arrive from Tahiti without a car, you can settle in right away without having to cross the whole island. To describe the lodging a bit more, it is simple, comfortable, and well laid out. The rooms come with a private bathroom, a comfortable bed, and the essential amenities for a pleasant stay.
You will also have access to an equipped kitchen, a terrace, a garden, and free parking. In other words, everything is designed to make your life easier. Reviews often highlight the warm welcome and the hosts’ availability, especially when it comes to sharing useful tips. As for the location, you will be near the dock and close to practical amenities, so you will not need to go far. I will grant you, this is not a feet-in-the-sand address, but rather a practical, well-located guesthouse with excellent value for money in the Vaiare area.
In my view, it is a very good guesthouse if you are looking for a stay near the ferry where you can feel comfortable right away. It can work perfectly for a one-night stopover, but also for a longer stay. I suggest keeping its name in mind.
Mark’s Place Moorea
We are changing scenery compared to the previous guesthouse and heading into a more natural setting with Mark’s Place Moorea. Here, you move a little away from the lagoon to settle in a tropical valley. To help you locate it, you will be on the island’s southwest coast, in the Haapiti area. This coast is well known for its beautiful sunsets and calmer vibe. The lagoon is not very far, and you will also be close to one of the island’s best-known surf spots.
From the moment you arrive, the setting sets the tone with a quiet, jungle-like atmosphere. It is the kind of place that feels good if you want to recharge. This is a wilder corner of Moorea, away from the most touristy areas.
As for accommodations, you can choose between several bungalows. Overall, they are simple but comfortable, while blending well into the natural setting. Whether you come to Moorea with family, friends, as a couple, or solo, the bungalows adapt well to different travel styles. In any case, the options remain quite affordable. It is truly a great deal in Moorea. Honestly, I especially recommend this address to solo travelers, those on a tighter budget, or anyone who wants to get a bit away from the busiest areas and discover another side of Moorea.
Green Lodge
To end this selection on a high note, Green Lodge is a great option to consider. More specifically, you will be near the beach, with a higher level of comfort than most guesthouses. To be more precise, this guesthouse is located in Teavaro, close to Temae Beach and the golf course. It is a very pleasant and quiet location.
As I was saying, this place focuses on more upscale services than a classic guesthouse. On the agenda: a beautiful garden, tasteful decor, spacious bungalows, and more. Everything is designed to offer a comfortable getaway in a peaceful setting. As a bonus, you will have beach access and an on-site pool. Let’s be honest, that clearly makes a difference.
As for accommodations, they are modern, well equipped, and air-conditioned, with a terrace and a private bathroom. The atmosphere remains intimate, with only a few lodges, so you keep that friendly feel, far from big hotels. Another advantage: there is an on-site restaurant. You can have breakfast there, but also lunch or dinner without having to go anywhere. As for activities, you will have plenty to do between the beach, the pool, billiards, or bike rentals to explore the surrounding area.
If you ask me, Green Lodge Moorea is a safe bet if you want lodging that is both charming and comfortable. It is a place to treat yourself without necessarily going for a luxury hotel. It is not the cheapest guesthouse, but if you have the budget, you should have a very nice stay.
