It has been quite a while since I last wrote about Moorea. Even so, if there is one island I almost always recommend on a trip to French Polynesia, it is definitely Moorea. People often think of the hotels on the island, but there are also many guesthouses in Moorea. It is a great alternative for discovering Tahiti’s sister island. Between its turquoise lagoon, lush vegetation, and gorgeous beaches, it is a true paradise island. Even after several stays there, Melanie and I always wanted to go back.
In my view, Moorea clearly is one of those places where you feel good right away. You come to enjoy the lagoon, explore the bays, go hiking inland, or simply slow the pace a bit. To get back to guesthouses, it is the option we recommend if you are looking for a more authentic, warmer, and of course more affordable stay. Honestly, staying in a guesthouse in Moorea is a great way to discover another side of the island, more local and more human.
You know us by now: we are sharing the best guesthouses based on our own experience there or that of people close to us. And we are not just giving you a list, we are sharing all our tips that go with it. So, are you in?
Are you planning your trip to French Polynesia?

The best guesthouses in Moorea
As I was saying, even though people often think of big hotels and overwater bungalows, you should not miss out on guesthouses either. In my opinion, it is often one of the best ways to discover the island, especially if you are looking for lodging with a bit more charm, simplicity, and human connection.
On the island, you should know that there are very different guesthouses. Each one has something to offer. In fact, some focus on the setting, others on direct access to the lagoon, or even on a breathtaking mountain view. Others highlight the quality of their welcome, their family vibe, or their excellent value for money. As you can see, there are guesthouses for every taste and every budget.
To explain my approach, I focused on the guesthouses we know or that we have received very good feedback about. In this selection, you will therefore find the ones I consider the best guesthouses in Moorea. All right, I will not say more and I will let you judge for yourself!

Linareva moorea
On the west coast of the island, this is a small, human-scale guesthouse set in a natural environment. The advantage is that it is far from Moorea’s most touristy areas. In other words, if you are looking for peace and quiet, there is no better place! In that sense, the guesthouse offers only about ten accommodations. They all feature a Polynesian wooden style, with vegetation and open to the outdoors… So you will find that authentic side that gives all the charm of the “real” Polynesia, as I like to call it.
To say more about the accommodations offered, you can choose between garden bungalows, studios, beach bungalows with lagoon views, or larger options like the beach suite or the family villa. Another strong point: there is a kitchenette or a kitchen in every unit. This is important because there is no on-site restaurant: you will only have breakfast served on your terrace.
As for activities, the guesthouse provides quite a few things for free: kayak, outrigger canoe, bikes, snorkeling gear… plenty to fully enjoy the lagoon without necessarily booking excursions. Clearly, this is the kind of place I recommend to those who want a quiet guesthouse in Moorea, with great value for money and a truly authentic feel.
Fare Edith
This time, we are looking at a place near Moorea’s famous lagoon. To help you locate it, it is on the Papetoai side, near Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. Its location is ideal, so you can easily get around the island as much as you want. This guesthouse is small, with only a few bungalows. To set the scene, everything is in bloom, and it feels like a little corner of paradise.
As for the bungalows, they are simple but well equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and a kitchen. It is perfect if you prefer to be independent. There are still several fare; they are all in the same spirit but designed to accommodate couples, families, or small groups.
That is not all! The guesthouse lends you kayaks to enjoy the lagoon. And as always, you can organize nearby excursions. A nice touch: breakfast can be served in your bungalow. All in all, Fare Edith is the ideal guesthouse if you want a stay with great value for money, close to the lagoon, and in a simple, welcoming atmosphere.
Poerani Moorea
If you are looking for a charming guesthouse with direct access to the lagoon, Poerani Moorea is a good option for you. It is located in the Maharepa area and is very well situated, in a quiet setting, with all amenities nearby. To give you a better idea, it is a small property right in the middle of a tropical garden. The atmosphere immediately sets the tone: vegetation, wood, Polynesian decor, everything is designed to make you feel good as soon as you arrive.
And above all, the main asset: direct access to the lagoon with a private beach. It is the dream in Moorea! For accommodations, you can choose between a wooden villa and three suites. Whatever you choose, the units are spacious, with beautiful terraces and a good level of comfort. In any case, you will have good independence on-site with real support and advice if needed.
By the way, a concierge service is available to help you organize your activities or transfers. It is always a plus if you do not know the island yet. In short, it is for all these reasons that Poerani Moorea is a safe bet for a successful stay in Moorea. So do not hesitate! Availability goes fast.
Fare Arana
Head to Moorea’s southwest coast, near Atiha Bay, to discover the Fare Arana guesthouse! On the agenda: quiet accommodations with a stunning lagoon view, all in a relaxed atmosphere. Here, we are clearly talking about a typical family-run guesthouse, run by Carole and Erick. You will immediately feel the warm, friendly vibe that is typical of Polynesia.
All accommodations offer this lagoon view, which is a real plus. They have a simple but comfortable style. Plus, you will be slightly away from the most visited areas. It is more pleasant for settling in and simply enjoying the idyllic scenery. What differs from the previous guesthouses is the on-site restaurant. In fact, in the evening, no need to go anywhere: you can eat right at the guesthouse, by the pool. Food lovers will not be disappointed and can try local dishes. As for amenities, you will enjoy a pool, a garden, common areas, and even a fare pote’e (a wooden structure with a roof but completely open, typical of Polynesia).
Clearly, Fare Arana is a guesthouse I recommend if you want to get a bit away from tourist areas and enjoy some peace and quiet. Trust me, it is a great opportunity to enjoy Moorea!
Painapaopao Backpacker
As its name suggests, we are moving on to a guesthouse with simpler comfort but also more budget-friendly. In any case, it is an address worth knowing. It is located between the famous Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. Needless to say, it is ideal for exploring Moorea at your own pace. Plus, you will be just a few minutes from Ta’ahiamanu Beach and close to the island’s must-sees. Small bonus: you have lagoon access just a few meters away.
Here, it is more of a hostel concept to meet other travelers. The vibe is really nice. You can choose between two double fare with a private bathroom and a mixed dorm with shared bathrooms, but much cheaper. Among the strong points of this guesthouse is a large, well-equipped shared kitchen to prepare your meals. It is a real plus on the island because it helps you save on your restaurant budget.
You got it: this is a place that aims to be simple and accessible. It is a welcoming spot where you can meet people and enjoy Moorea without breaking the bank. It is also the cheapest guesthouse compared to the ones we saw above. It would be a shame to miss out, take advantage of it!

Moorea Vaiare Lodge
This guesthouse lives up to its name; it is located in Vaiare, very close to the ferry dock. So if you arrive from Tahiti without a car, this guesthouse invites you to settle in right away, without having to cross the whole island. To describe the lodging a bit more, it is simple, comfortable, and well laid out. In fact, it offers rooms with a private bathroom, a comfortable bed, and all the necessary amenities for a successful stay!
Not to mention that you will also have an equipped kitchen, a terrace, a garden, and free parking. In other words, everything is designed to make your life easier! In any case, reviews are unanimous: the hosts are warm and always available to share valuable tips. So do not hesitate to ask them if you have any questions! As for the location, you will be near the dock but also close to all amenities. At least, you will not need to go far. I will grant you, this is not a place with your feet in the sand, but rather a practical, well-located guesthouse. Not to mention that it offers excellent value for money for the Vaiare area.
In my view, it is a very good guesthouse if you are looking for a stay near the ferry where you will feel comfortable right away. It can work perfectly for a one-night stopover, but also for a longer stay! I suggest keeping its name in mind.
Mark’s Place Moorea
We are changing scenery compared to the previous guesthouse and heading into the heart of nature with Mark’s Place Moorea. You will see, we move a bit away from the lagoon to settle in a tropical valley. To help you locate it, you will be on the island’s southwest coast, in the Haapiti area. This coast is well known for its magnificent sunsets and its calmer vibe. The lagoon is not very far, but you will be facing one of the best surf spots.
From the moment you arrive, the setting sets the tone with a jungle-like, quiet, and even exotic atmosphere. It is the kind of place that feels good, to recharge. It is a wilder corner of Moorea, far from tourist areas.
As for accommodations, you can choose between several bungalows. Overall, they are simple but comfortable, while blending well into the natural setting. Whether you come to Moorea with family, friends, as a couple, or solo, the bungalows adapt well to each situation. In any case, all options are quite affordable. It is truly a great deal in Moorea! Honestly, I especially recommend this address to solo travelers, those on a tight budget, or those who want to get a bit away from the busiest areas to discover another side of Moorea.
Green Lodge
To end this selection on a high note, Green Lodge is a great option available to you. Specifically, you will be near the beach with a higher level of comfort than most guesthouses. To be more precise, this guesthouse is located in Teavaro, close to Temae Beach and the golf course. Just imagine the location: it is super pleasant and quiet.
As I was saying, this place focuses on more upscale services than a classic guesthouse. On the agenda: a gorgeous garden, tasteful decor, large bungalows, and more. One thing is certain: everything is designed to offer you a comfortable getaway in a serene setting. As a bonus, you will have direct access to the beach and even an on-site pool. Let’s be honest, it clearly makes a difference.
As for accommodations, they are modern, well equipped, and air-conditioned, with a terrace and a private bathroom. The atmosphere remains intimate, with only a few lodges. You keep that friendly feel, far from big hotels. Another advantage: there is an on-site restaurant. You can have breakfast there, but also lunch or dinner without having to go anywhere. As for activities, you will have plenty to do between the beach, the pool, billiards, or bike rentals to explore the surrounding area.
If you ask me, Green Lodge Moorea is a safe bet if you want lodging that is both charming and comfortable. It is a place to treat yourself without necessarily going for a luxury hotel. It is not the cheapest guesthouse, but if you have the budget, you clearly will not be disappointed.
