This time I’m back with a new article about Costa Rica. We were lucky enough to spend one month in Costa Rica in 2023 with the kids, and it was a fantastic experience! With its incredible biodiversity and volcanic landscapes, we made plenty of discoveries in this small Central American country. It was also our first time in this part of the world, and it turned out to be a truly enriching trip—both culturally and for the scenery.
During our month-long journey in Costa Rica, we stopped in La Fortuna/Arenal, a very popular and unmissable destination. To put it simply, La Fortuna is the starting point for most excursions in the region. That’s why I’ve put together a complete guide to the best hotels in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Since it’s a tourist hotspot, the good news is that you’ll find plenty of accommodation options—and above all, something for every budget.
For us, La Fortuna offered amazing experiences, from hanging bridges to hot springs and tropical forests. That said, be careful: we also found that some activities felt more like tourist traps. I recommend staying alert when booking excursions. But then again, that’s often the case in highly touristy areas! In any case, I can assure you that La Fortuna and its surroundings are well worth the trip.
As you can tell, the purpose of this article is to help you plan your trip to Costa Rica. For us, it wasn’t very far from Guadeloupe, but depending on where you’re coming from, it could be quite a long journey. So, let me give you a hand in your search for accommodation in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.
The Best Hotels in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
As I mentioned, La Fortuna/Arenal was one of the stops on our one-month itinerary in Costa Rica. Since it’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area, you’ll find all kinds of hotels here. There are small, simple but well-loved places as well as luxury hotels—it all depends on what you’re looking for! In any case, I’ve put together a selection of hotels organized by category to make your search easier. You can go directly to the part that interests you, or if you’re unsure, just read through the full article! If you ask me, you’ll definitely find at least one hotel that suits you (if not more).
Luxury Hotels in La Fortuna: Between Opulence and Outstanding Ambiance
If you want to treat yourself during your stay in La Fortuna, you’ll be glad to know it offers some beautiful high-end properties. You’ll find stunning 4- and 5-star hotels with everything that goes with them: idyllic settings, spas, pools, fitness rooms, fine dining restaurants, and much more! That said, even though the selection is wide, I can tell you that the best hotels sell out quickly, especially during high season. So if I can give you one piece of advice: once you’ve made your choice, don’t wait too long to book.

The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal
Located right across from Arenal Volcano, this resort is rated 5 stars. I’ll let you discover it for yourself, but everything here is designed to wow visitors! In concrete terms, it features 28 thermal-water pools surrounded by lush greenery, with an incredible view of Arenal’s cone. The rooms live up to the setting: they’re spacious, with a hot tub and a terrace. And the best part? They face the volcano—just wow!
Unsurprisingly, the facilities are top-notch, including the spa (sauna/steam room), gym, free parking, and five restaurants (buffet, grill, sushi bar—plenty to enjoy!). As for service, reviews are unanimous: the staff is warm and very attentive. Of course, this setting and these amenities come at a price. But if you’re looking for a luxurious escape in La Fortuna, The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal is the perfect choice!
Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa
At Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, you’ll be even closer to Arenal Volcano! You’ll literally be at the foot of the volcano while enjoying natural hot springs. To set the scene, you’ll find five pools hidden in the jungle, promising a truly nature-focused experience. As you can imagine, this is the property’s main highlight.
The rooms and suites are modern and extremely comfortable, featuring air conditioning, premium bedding, and stylish bathrooms. The difference between the rooms and suites comes down to the addition of a sitting area. To make your stay even more complete, you’ll also find a luxury spa, a sauna, a bar, and two restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Add to that a few extras—free valet parking, a welcome cocktail, and unlimited access to the hot springs—and you’ve got a premium property for a full immersion in nature.
Nayara Gardens
Very close to Arenal Volcano, Nayara Gardens is a luxurious boutique hotel tucked away in the rainforest. Here, you’ll stay in independent bungalow-style casitas, beautifully decorated with wood, featuring a private terrace and, very often, a small pool or hot tub—all surrounded by lush greenery.
At this property, the key words are luxury and relaxation, with pools, hot springs, a high-end spa (with volcanic mud), three restaurants, and a wine bar. To help you picture it better, there are flower-filled paths, a small maze, and an outdoor pool with a bar—perfect for relaxing after a day of excursions. For dining, there’s a buffet breakfast and a restaurant serving international cuisine. Although it’s a slight step down in range compared to the previous hotels and doesn’t have hot springs, this property offers a true immersion in nature, complete with wildlife like hummingbirds and frogs. A real treat!
Hotel Lomas del Volcan
This 4-star hotel combines the charm of wooden cabins with the comfort of a resort. You can choose between several bungalows accommodating 2 to 4 people. They’re independent, with a terrace overlooking the gardens, and some even come with a private hot tub!
The property is designed to be very green and natural, while still offering excellent services such as a pool with a swim-up bar, a hot tub, two restaurants, and even a private 1.5 km trail. Not to mention the included buffet breakfast, the spa with massages, and the organization of excursions. In short, you come here for peace, independence, natural surroundings, local wildlife, and high-quality amenities. In my opinion, you won’t be disappointed!
