I’m back with a slightly different kind of article about Guadeloupe. We’ve now been living in this beautiful archipelago for almost two and a half years, and I recently mentioned that I wanted to start publishing shorter pieces about some of the special experiences you can enjoy here. One of the first was about the massages at Parc aux Orchidées.
Today, I’m taking things in a different direction and sharing our brunch experience at Habitation l’Oiseau, in Vieux-Habitants on the west coast of Basse-Terre. It may seem a little unusual to devote an article to brunch, but Mélanie and I have recently talked about writing more often about the places where we eat. After all, food matters to us—as it does to any self-respecting French family.
We’d heard about the place several times and wanted to try it for ourselves. I can’t promise that we’ll turn into a restaurant review blog, but it’s a type of content we’d like to develop gradually in Guadeloupe, sharing honest feedback to help readers choose where to eat.
It’s similar to the way we write about different places to stay. We’ve already published a review of Jardin des Colibris in Deshaies.
So here’s a short article with our impressions of the experience.
Brunch at Habitation l'Oiseau
At the time of our visit, Habitation l’Oiseau appeared to offer brunch only on Sunday mornings. Since it didn’t start until 10 a.m.—a little late for brunch, isn’t it, or is that just me?—we left Vieux-Fort, where we live, at 9:30 a.m.
We already knew the property from a previous visit for a different occasion, which we’ll write about another time. After about half an hour along the leeward coast, we reached the beautiful house in Vieux-Habitants. Habitation l’Oiseau is a former colonial home that has been converted into a guesthouse and event venue.

The property makes a lovely first impression as you drive in. The house stands on the right, surrounded by extensive grounds with access to the river. We’ve walked through the park several times, and I really recommend taking a stroll around the house to get a feel for the setting. It isn’t a botanical garden, but it’s still pleasant to wander among the trees and buildings. The enormous mango tree beside the parking lot is especially impressive. It looks as though it may have been there for centuries.
We headed to the brunch reception area, where a short line had formed. After paying €26 per adult and €15 per child ages 3 to 13, the staff explained how everything worked. The concept was simple: both sweet and savory dishes were included, and guests could sit almost anywhere in the garden where tables and chairs were available.

We settled with the kids at a folding table in the shade, which suited us perfectly. It was a relaxed way to spend a Sunday morning together, and everyone was happy.
The buffet was arranged beneath a large covered structure, with separate sections for savory and sweet dishes.
The sweet section included all the usual brunch staples: tea, coffee, hot chocolate, iced tea, excellent fresh fruit juice, pastries such as pain au chocolat and croissants, pancakes with jam and Nutella, bread, chocolate muffins, banana muffins, apple cake, and assorted fruit. It was a generous selection. I’m generally more interested in savory food than sweet dishes, but there was still plenty to choose from.
The savory selection included pies, quiche, scrambled eggs, bacon, cucumber salad, cod chiquetaille, merguez, chicken skewers, and tabbouleh. There were also excellent chicken bokits and migan de fruit à pain, a Creole dish made with breadfruit and pork in sauce.
Overall, there was more than enough food, and the price felt reasonable for what was offered. The presentation could have been a little more polished, as several dishes were served in large metal containers that felt slightly cafeteria-like, but that’s a minor point. What mattered most was that we enjoyed the meal.
We ended up spending two hours there with the kids. One of the property’s biggest advantages is that children can play safely in the park while the adults relax. Families can enjoy Sunday brunch while the kids use the swing and run around the spacious grounds. It’s an easy way to spend a laid-back morning.

Practical information
Here are a few practical details about the brunch.
How do I get there?
As always, travel time depends on where you’re starting. From Basse-Terre, allow roughly 30 minutes for the 10-kilometer drive. Here’s the exact route. Watch for the turnoff near the Vieux-Habitants exit, just before the Grande Rivière bridge. There is a sign, and GPS directions should take you there without difficulty.
Where to stay nearby?
It may be possible to stay on-site, as the property has several rooms at different price points. I wasn’t able to confirm whether individual rooms can be booked separately.
There are also plenty of other places to stay in the surrounding area.
What to do in the area
Your plans will depend on your interests, but here are a few activities worth considering while you’re in the area:
- Climb the Soufrière volcano high above Saint-Claude.
- Enjoy the beautiful beaches on the west coast, such as Petit Anse.
- Go a little farther north and dive at the Cousteau Reserve.
- And plenty more besides!
That brings me to the end of this short article about brunch at Habitation l’Oiseau. We’ll be back with more reviews of the restaurants we visit around Guadeloupe. Since this article was first published, we have also tried Restaurant O Ranch in Basse-Terre, where we had a very enjoyable meal and would happily recommend the experience.
See you soon.
