Five years on from the launch of the G9, Panasonic introduces the G9 II, a model that enhances its technical capabilities without compromising on the compactness and weight for which its predecessor is renowned. The move from 20 MP to 25 MP improves image sharpness, while starting at ISO 100 improves low-light quality. On the recording side, video is up to 5.7K at 60 fps and LUTs can be applied in real time for instantly adjustable colour rendition. Meanwhile, Leica Monochrome mode offers enriched black and white images that are richer and more subtle.

The key development of the G9 II is the hybrid autofocus, which for the first time combines phase detection with contrast detection, overcoming the limitations of the G9. With 315 points, autofocus is more accurate and responsive, even when the subject is moving. Burst speeds of 75 frames per second with AF-S and 60 frames per second with AF-C are supported by a 200 frame buffer. The 5-axis image stabiliser has been further improved to provide a gain of 8.5 stops, allowing photographers to shoot in difficult lighting conditions without the need for a tripod.

In terms of handling, the adjustable screen is reminiscent of the G9's, while the OLED viewfinder with its 3.68 million dots improves aiming quality. Another big plus is the ability to record directly to SSD, which comes in handy for the most demanding workflows.
