Panasonic GH5S vs G9

Introduced in January 2018, the Panasonic GH5S is a micro 4/3 hybrid body focused on the needs of videographers. Its 10.2 MP sensor promotes excellent high-sensitivity management, which is well suited to low-light conditions. Weighing just 660g, it features a precise 3.68 million-dot OLED viewfinder and a 1.62 million-dot steerable touchscreen. It offers an extended ISO range of 160 to 51,200 and has two UHS-II SD slots for smooth shooting. However, unlike the GH5, it does not have mechanical image stabilisation.

Unlike the GH5, the GH5S focuses more on video than stills, opting for a lower-resolution sensor. Its autofocus system, based on contrast detection and DFD technology, was efficient for its time, but now seems outdated by the advances of newer cameras such as the GH6 and GH7. Similarly, its limited 12 fps burst, while respectable in 2018, now seems modest by today's standards.

Despite these limitations, the GH5S retains important advantages for video content creators. With features such as 4K DCI recording, built-in V-Log and extensive connectivity options, it remains a powerful tool for professionals. Its tropicalised design and low-light capabilities make it a relevant choice for certain applications, even if it has been superseded by newer models.

The Lumix G9 also excels in video, capable of shooting 4K at 60fps, a rare feature at the time of launch. It includes innovations such as 6K Photo mode and Post Focus, ideal for capturing moving subjects or adjusting focus after shooting. Despite its effectiveness, this model was replaced in 2023 by the Lumix G9 II, which brings significant improvements: more powerful autofocus thanks to AI, better ISO management and expanded connectivity options.

Despite the arrival of new models, the Lumix G9 retains a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. Its solidity, range of features and now lower price make it a reliable option, perfect for those looking for a versatile, durable mirrorless camera.
