Hello, here I am again with an article that might surprise you. Today, I’m completely changing gears! I’m going to tell you about an accessory that has become increasingly trendy and used in recent years: portable photo printers. In fact, back in 2013, when I went to Southeast Asia, they already existed. But at that time, they were rather rare and the quality was average. Since then, things have really evolved!
Still with the idea of telling you about photo gear at an acceptable price, note that I had written an article on the best instant cameras. We’ve recently updated it.
In my view, portable printers are among those very interesting accessories, especially if you travel! They let you print a photo directly from your smartphone or your advanced compact camera. I’d even say it’s a nice way to leave memories with the people you meet: travelers, locals, lost in the depths of the countryside. Or even with children, a photo is always a lovely keepsake. You can even go further: the printer will be welcome at a family meal or even a weekend with friends. In other words, it’s useful in all sorts of everyday situations, events, or trips…
Alright, since you’re here for that, I’ll give you all the details on the best portable photo printers of the moment!
A tablet can also be very useful for storing, editing or printing your photos when travelling. Check out our guide to the best iPads.
The best portable photo printers
Canon mini portable printers
Canon Selphy QX20 Photo Printer
Released in October 2024, the Canon Selphy QX20 is a portable photo printer with dye-sublimation technology. It’s a process based on three color passes that ensures sharp, precise prints that are especially water- and fingerprint-resistant. This printer offers two print formats: square or credit card. What’s more, it works only via Wi-Fi while charging over USB-C.
As for the battery, you get a life of 20 prints. Its dimensions and weight remain quite reasonable, even if it’s bulkier than some of its competitors. Plus, you’ll have access to the SELPHY Photo Layout mobile app for your edits and collages, with text and borders, for example.
Designed primarily for leisure and creativity, the QX20 is ideal for scrapbooking fans and printed memories to share at events. It’s also easy to use (no need to be a pro!). Finally, it offers rather satisfying image quality, especially in small formats.
In short, the Selphy QX20 ticks many boxes: easy to use, intuitive app, output with beautiful color. However, there are a few limits, such as the need to change the paper and ribbon to switch from one format to another, as well as the 10-sheet loading limit. If these two points don’t bother you too much, the QX20 is an interesting option, as it delivers superior print quality for a compact device.

Papers to use for Canon Selphy QX20:
- Canon XS-20L (Square Sticker Paper): square format 72 × 85 mm with writable border
- Canon XC-20L (Card-size Sticker Paper): card format 54 × 85 mm
Canon Zoemini 2 Photo Printer
Available since November 2022, the Canon Zoemini 2 is a photo printer that works with ZINK technology, which means the ink is integrated directly into the paper. Compared to dye-sublimation models like the Selphy, it’s a process that creates cartridge-free prints. That’s what makes the printer less bulky. Compared to previous models, image quality is improved, with a resolution of 314 × 500 DPI, versus 314 × 400 DPI. It works over Bluetooth 5.0.
Its dimensions make it more than compact and easy to take everywhere with you. It offers sticker paper in two formats: classic (5 × 7.6 cm) and round (with a 33 mm diameter). The Canon Mini Print mobile app has evolved as well. Concretely, it offers more creative tools: filters, collages, stickers, etc.
The Zoemini 2 is aimed primarily at creative users who like printed memories to share. It’s perfectly at home at parties and events. Among its strengths, we note its ease of use and transport.
You’ve got it: if you prioritize compactness, the Zoemini 2 is an excellent option! Although its system, which includes the ink directly in the paper, offers lower quality than thermal, it still remains perfectly acceptable. Something to keep in mind!

Canon Selphy Square QX10 Photo Printer
Announced in February 2020, the Canon Selphy Square QX10 is a printer that uses dye-sublimation technology. It offers a single print size: square (6.5 × 6.5 cm). Its printing uses four passes: three colors and a protective varnish. That ensures a sharp, high-quality result. Some even consider its resolution close to that of desktop printers. The printer works only over Wi-Fi. It charges via micro-USB and offers a battery life of 20 prints.
As for size, even though it’s fairly compact, it won’t fit in a pocket, but rather a small bag. It’s compatible with the Canon Selphy Layout app, which is great for customizing your keepsake photos. Printing is fairly fast, at 45 seconds.
In terms of use, the QX10 is made for anyone looking for superior image quality in a portable printer. Indeed, it perfectly combines creativity and sharpness. However, it only prints in square format, whereas rectangular (credit card) is increasingly trendy. It’s a deliberate choice.
In a few words, although this printer has a few limits, such as its battery life and operating noise, it delivers very beautiful results. It positions itself as an interesting alternative to ZINK or Instax printers for users with high demands (sharpness, quality, and compactness). In my opinion, it’s a safe bet—you can go for it without hesitation!

Kodak mini portable printers
KODAK Mini 2 Retro Photo Printer
Available since August 2020, the Kodak Mini 2 Retro is a photo printer based on 4 PASS dye-sublimation technology. That’s what ensures professional print quality. This process includes three color passes + a protective layer. The printer offers a credit-card print size, and works via Bluetooth. It can be controlled just as well from a smartphone as from a tablet, through the dedicated app.
In terms of design, it lives up to its name: it sports a retro style with Kodak’s signature colors. It’s also compact and autonomous with its built-in battery. It’s meant to be intuitive and accessible to everyone. Moreover, the dedicated app offers numerous creative possibilities, such as filters, adding text, cropping, and more!
In other words, the Kodak Mini 2 Retro is perfectly suited to fans of instant photos who want to immortalize their memories on paper. Its print size is ideal for albums, journals, or a decorative touch.
In conclusion, the Kodak Mini 2 Retro has already won over quite a few users. It’s lightweight, effective, and easy to carry. Once again, it’s a good alternative to ZINK or Instax models. It even offers a unique design while being resistant to humidity and fingerprints. Frankly, I think it’s the perfect compromise between quality and creativity!

KODAK Mini 3 Retro Photo Printer
Released the year after the Mini 2 Retro, this version also relies on 4 PASS dye-sublimation technology, while offering square prints only (7.6 × 7.6 cm). The print format is the main difference between the Mini 2 Retro and the Mini 3 Retro. It also offers good protection against humidity and fingerprints, so results stay sharp and durable. It also works via Bluetooth and has a built-in battery.
Compact and lightweight, this printer is easy to take anywhere with you. Its retro design appeals to many users with a touch of nostalgia. It’s controlled from a smartphone or tablet via the corresponding app. It’s meant to be intuitive and efficient for cropping, adding filters, stickers, or frames. What’s more, print quality is excellent: it’s sharp and color-faithful compared to ZINK or Instax printers.
The Mini 3 Retro is aimed at anyone who wants to keep tangible memories at events or day-to-day. Its square format gives it a touch of originality, as most current printers offer a credit-card print. It’s also easy to handle for teens and adults looking for beautiful results and an original design.
To sum up, this printer is an excellent option for anyone who wants a portable printer with good quality. Indeed, its visual output and ease of use make it the perfect ally for all your events! Believe me, you won’t be disappointed!

Kodak Mini Photo Printer
The Kodak Mini presents itself as a portable dye-sublimation printer. It produces credit-card-size images with a depth of 16.7 million colors and a resolution of 256 gradation levels. Its battery guarantees a life of around 20 prints. Plus, connectivity is wireless: Wi-Fi and NFC.
This printer stands out for its light weight (450 g) and its more-than-compact format. It’s controlled via the Kodak Photo Printer app, which aims to be intuitive for printing and customization.
In terms of use, the Kodak Mini Printer fits into everyday life and all kinds of events to print memories quickly. Given its size, it’s perfectly possible to take it traveling, to parties, and more. We still note that its print speed is lower than that of its competitors. Expect about 1 minute per print. On the other hand, the final result is impeccable and of better quality than ZINK printers. Simply put, colors are more faithful, with a finish that’s resistant to humidity.
Clearly, the Kodak Mini photo printer has many assets: compact format, good-quality output, clean design (no retro style, unlike the two Kodaks presented above). Plus, it’s reliable and offers good consumable longevity (paper + cartridges).

Instax mini portable printers
Fujifilm Instax Square Link Photo Printer
Released in November 2022, this printer offers square prints only (62 × 62 mm). It uses Instax film to create retro-style results. It’s much lighter than the Kodaks (only 236 g), while its dimensions are more than reasonable. It connects via Bluetooth and charges by USB-C (a first for Fuji in this range). Its battery life is generally better than its competitors: it can reach up to 100 prints.
Among its strong points, there’s the dedicated Instax app, which lets you push print customization: cropping, filters, but not only — videos via QR code or animations. It also offers two color profiles: rich (more faithful) and natural (more pastel). Printing is done at a resolution of 318 DPI. This allows for a sharp result, but inferior to dye-sublimation printers. Finally, the cost per photo is fairly high: between 90 cents and €1.30 per print, depending on the pack.
Designed for users seeking the perfect balance between creativity and practicality. Indeed, it’s easy to handle while sporting a clean, modern design. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a tool to capture their memories live.
In conclusion, the Square Link fits perfectly with Fujifilm’s identity with its design and vintage films. If you prefer to prioritize creativity over quality, I can only recommend it. Of course, even if output quality is lower than thermal systems, it’s still perfectly fine. And I think it helps create more retro results. It’s up to you!

Fujifilm Instax Square Link Photo Printer
Paper compatible with this printer:
Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 3 Photo Printer
On sale since August 2024, the Fujifilm Instax mini Link 3 stands out as a portable photo printer in credit-card format, using Instax chemical emulsion technology. Prints are made at a resolution of 318 DPI, via a process that takes about 1 min 30. It’s compatible with Bluetooth 5.1 via its Instax mini Link app (iOS/Android). It charges via USB-C and offers a battery life of around 100 prints.
As for design, it’s lightweight, minimalist, and comes in three colors. The app is simple while offering plenty of possibilities: frames, filters, you can even extract an image from a video. We also note more playful features like InstaxAIR Studio, which overlays augmented-reality elements on your photos. In terms of color, there are still two modes: “rich” and “natural.” The first remains the most accurate, while the second creates a more vintage effect.
The mini Link 3 targets users looking for an accessible portable printer with a touch of creativity and nostalgia. What’s more, it’s easy to take anywhere, whether for special events or simple moments to share (and capture).
To sum up, even if the Fujifilm Instax mini Link 3 isn’t as precise as dye-sublimation technologies, it focuses on many other strengths. I’m thinking of its retro design, its battery life, and all its creative options. In my opinion, this printer above all offers a playful and fast experience!

Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 3 Photo Printer
Paper to use for this printer:
Fujifilm Instax Link Wide Photo Printer
As its name suggests, the Fujifilm Instax Link Wide produces instant prints in a wide format (film 108 × 86 mm, image 99 × 62 mm). Based on Instax technology, it connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth. Its battery allows up to 100 prints per charge. With its fairly reasonable dimensions and weight, it’s easy to carry in a bag. But we still notice that it’s bulkier than mini or square models. Printing is very fast (15 seconds for paper output), while you’ll have to wait a few minutes for the image to fully develop.
As for the dedicated app, it’s Link Wide, compatible with iOS and Android. It’s easy to use, with several creative options: filters, emojis, frames, QR code, and even audio messages embedded in a photo. You can even duplicate the same image ten times. The main improvement over previous versions remains the color rendering. Of course, the result won’t be perfect, especially for yellow tones. But it remains acceptable for a portable photo printer.
This printer is suitable for both retro photo enthusiasts and pros who want to create original materials. Indeed, the Wide format offers more detailed results for portraits and landscapes. Of course, it doesn’t offer the precision of a dye-sublimation printer, but its vintage results are what make it trendy.
You’ve got it: with the Instax Link Wide, you have a tool that’s simple to use, with good battery life and a nice result. Even if the cost per photo is high, it remains an excellent option! If you want my opinion, you won’t be disappointed!

Paper compatible with this printer:
Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 portable photo printer
Launched in November 2017 (it’s the oldest in the article!), the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 is aimed primarily at fans of instant photos in square format. It uses Instax Square films, which deliver a retro result, close to the famous Polaroids. With the square format, it’s possible to create creative compositions and scrapbooking. In other words, just let your creativity run free!
On the connectivity side, it works via a Wi-Fi connection, which was great at the time of its release. But today, it’s not the most innovative connectivity. Indeed, unlike more recent Fuji models, this printer has neither Bluetooth nor a USB port, which may put some people off. In addition, according to feedback, we note an unstable connection.
In terms of quality, nothing to complain about: it delivers sharp, aesthetic results. Moreover, compared with models released around the same time, it offers soft, matte colors thanks to Instax technology. Battery life is pretty good, with 100 prints per charge. It’s therefore perfectly suited to regular use. As for consumables, the cost is the same as other products in the Instax range: between €0.99 and €1.20.
In a few words, the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 remains trendy with its square format and quality vintage image rendering. On the other hand, it’s the connectivity that lets it down and imposes certain limits on efficiency and speed. It remains a printer that does the job for instant-photo enthusiasts. What’s more, it’s much cheaper than more recent models.

Launched in 2021, the AgfaPhoto Realipix Mini P is so compact it literally fits in your pocket. It’s based on ZINK technology and prints in 5 × 7.6 cm format, with no ink or cartridge, since the colors are integrated directly into the paper. What’s more, the paper is water-resistant and offers a self-adhesive back, handy for sticking your memories wherever you want.
As for the battery, it charges via USB without any fuss. Its design is discreet and easy to carry. Between its battery and size, it’s the perfect companion for all your trips. The associated app, CONVI, offers good personalization features like filters, text, or stickers. It’s also possible to do simple crops to adjust photos.

In terms of performance, the printer has proven itself. Feedback is rather positive. We note its ease of use, light weight, and creative side. It’s well suited to occasional use, even if color rendering isn’t 100% faithful.
In short, the AgfaPhoto Realipix Mini P is priced around €80, which corresponds to the market average. So we’re looking at an affordable, fun, and intuitive printer. If you’re looking for a fun, creative solution to make memories without high demands, I recommend it!

- AMC20, AMC30 or AMC50 (the digits after “AMC” correspond to the number of prints, to be chosen according to your needs).
Portable Photo Printer - AgfaPhoto Realipix SQUARE P
The AgfaPhoto Realipix Square P stands out as a printer with original prints: square format 7.6 × 7.6 cm. Both compact and lightweight, it uses dye-sublimation printing (4Pass). This technology ensures a good-quality, durable result with faithful colors.
Its design is rather minimalist and clean, with a small LED screen to monitor the printer’s status. For your information, it comes with a cartridge of 8 photos, so you can get to grips with it as soon as it arrives.
In use, it’s intuitive and simple to handle. It’s perfect for a creative and mobile audience who want trendy, retro photos. Indeed, the quality of its output and its compactness are among its strengths. On the other hand, we notice that the specific cartridges to use are often out of stock.
In two words, the AgfaPhoto Realipix Square P is an interesting printer for creative square-format photos. I simply advise you to check consumable availability before ordering. It’s always better to make sure you’ll really be able to use it!

Other brands?
Xiaomi Mi Portable Photo Printer
Launched in 2020, the Xiaomi Mi Portable Photo Printer stands out as a mini photo printer that fits in a pocket or small bag. This printer focuses on ease of use. It works only via Bluetooth while relying on ZINK technology. Printing is therefore done without ink or cartridges, which is really convenient.
Compared to other similar models, this printer offers limited battery life: up to 20 photos per charge. Its print format corresponds to classic mini sticker photos. The prints are therefore suited to journals, collages, or decoration.
Its image quality remains lower than dye-sublimation printers such as the Canon Selphy or the Agfa Realipix Moments presented above. Photos may lack sharpness, contrast, and precision. Despite that, the result remains acceptable for playful, natural-looking output. We also note that its associated app offers fairly basic options compared to other models. Its main asset therefore remains its price: between €49 and €75, depending on the period and retailer. It’s therefore among the most affordable portable photo printers on the market.
Clearly, this Xiaomi portable printer is mainly made to create instant memories quickly and at a low price. So don’t focus on quality and customization options. That said, for the price, it remains perfectly satisfactory, compact, and affordable. It focuses above all on the fun, creative experience of making memories in physical form.

Polaroid Hi-Print 2×3 pocket photo printer
The Polaroid Hi-Print, on sale since 2020, presents itself as a pocket photo printer with a playful design, while departing a bit from the brand’s DNA. Moreover, unlike the brand’s other devices, this printer does not use instant films. It relies entirely on dye-sublimation.
On the connectivity side, everything is done via Bluetooth with a mobile app (iOS and Android) that lets you retouch photos: brightness, contrast, sharpness, filters, stickers, etc. The print size is sticker and 54 × 86 mm (equivalent to a credit card).
Its ergonomics and user experience are great. However, image quality is clearly not the best. For example, colors aren’t very faithful, details are soft (due to a lack of bite). Even on small prints, it’s noticeable. It’s a pity, since dye-sublimation generally offers a sharper, more precise result than ZINK technology. Finally, the battery allows up to 20 prints per charge, while the cost per photo is around 85 cents per print.
In conclusion, the Polaroid Hi-Print has potential, as it’s easy to use, just like its dedicated app. However, don’t expect exceptional quality when it comes to prints. I’m repeating myself, but I find that really unfortunate. Maybe Polaroid will release a new version with improved quality? That said, if you’re looking above all for fun, quick enjoyment, you’ll be happy with this printer.

How to choose your mini portable printer?
To go further and help you find the mini portable printer that suits you, I’m giving you a few more tips! Here are all the elements to take into account, in my view.
1. Dimensions and weight
I’d say these are the first specs to check for a portable printer. Above all, it should be easy to carry, especially if you travel often. That will be much more convenient for you! I therefore advise you to make sure it’s light and compact enough to fit in a pocket, for example, or to carry it in a small, unobtrusive bag.
2. Type of printing
Here’s another important element to consider! ZINK (Zero Ink) printers, often confused with classic thermal printers, are very compact and don’t require ink cartridges. They use a specific paper. However, their image quality is decent, with colors that are sometimes less faithful.
Dye-sublimation models, on the other hand, offer much higher image quality, with sharp results, natural colors, and very good durability.
Finally, inkjet printers, rarer in ultra-compact formats, are very versatile and offer excellent color accuracy. They’re suitable for those seeking precise photo printing. But you have to think about ink refills: they require more maintenance.
3. Print quality (DPI)
For beautiful results, it’s essential to look at print resolution. It’s expressed in DPI (dots per inch) and greatly contributes to sharpness. I recommend prioritizing a high resolution (300 DPI or more).

4. Connectivity
Although most portable photo printers offer wireless connectivity, I advise you to check the connection options:
- Bluetooth or Wi-Fi: perfect for wireless printing from your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
- USB: useful as a wired alternative.
5. Compatibility
Make sure the printer is compatible with your devices (Android, iOS, Windows, macOS). Some printers require a specific app. Rest assured, in general, dedicated apps are at least compatible with Android and iOS.
6. Power supply
There are two options:
- Built-in battery: this is the most convenient for use without an immediate power source. Just check the battery life.
- USB cable or mains: pay attention to this, especially when you’re on the move and don’t have an outlet handy.
7. Supported print formats
Each model offers one or more different print formats: that’s what lets you give free rein to your creations. Check these formats carefully so they match your wishes before ordering!

8. Consumables
We can agree on this: consumables have a cost. I therefore advise you to look closely at their price (often in packs) and their availability (some are harder to find than others). For example, some printers use very specific papers, like ZINK paper. For inkjet printers, you also need to factor in the cost of cartridges. Simply put: by checking the consumables, you’ll get a good estimate of the total price of your portable photo printer.
9. Print speed
A few minutes, more or less depending on the model, sounds fast. But as soon as you chain prints, it starts to drag on… and you lose patience. So opt for a faster printer to avoid overly long waits!
10. Additional features
- Photo printing: as you’ve seen, some models are specially designed to print photos with high quality.
- Water- or heat-resistance: you don’t think of it at first, but it’s useful for printing outdoors or in particular conditions. And it also prevents fingerprints!
- Duplex printing: rather rare on portable models, but it’s a good asset if it’s an option available on the printer you have in mind.
11. Budget
Since budget remains important, I recommend comparing printer prices first. Then check the cost of consumables. That will let you be sure the total cost of your printer is affordable!
I’ll stop here on mini portable photo printers. It’s a bit different from what I usually write, but I thought it was important to tell you about it. It’s an accessory that’s becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to understand why! In any case, I hope this article helps you make your choice.
Without getting too far ahead, I think that among all the models presented, you’re bound to find what you’re looking for. And if you already have a portable photo printer, feel free to share your opinion and experience in the comments. It can always help other readers!
