Panasonic GH5 II vs GH5S

The arrival of the Panasonic Lumix GH5 II in June 2021 is a welcome update to the famous GH5, which appeared four years earlier. The camera retains the strengths of its predecessor, such as its 20.3 MP Micro 4/3 sensor, an ISO range of 200 to 25,600 and a 3.68 million-dot OLED viewfinder. New features include improved stabilisation of up to 6.5 stops and enhanced autofocus thanks to artificial intelligence that can identify faces, bodies and even animals.

The GH5 II remains compatible with UHS-II SD cards, enabling fast and efficient file processing for professionals. The burst rate peaks at 12fps with autofocus tracking, while videographers will appreciate the ability to shoot 6K anamorphic at 30fps and 4K DCI at 60fps, all without cropping. A new wireless streaming function, accessible via the Lumix Sync app, simplifies live streaming of Full HD video, making the camera even more attractive to content creators.

However, the GH5 II is already showing its limitations in the face of newer models such as the GH6, which offers improved performance with a higher-resolution sensor, more responsive autofocus and advanced stabilisation. Although no longer the most innovative model, it remains an excellent choice for those looking for a reliable, full-featured and affordable mirrorless camera.

Launched in January 2018, the Panasonic GH5S is a micro 4/3 hybrid camera with a 10.2 MP sensor designed specifically for videographers. Weighing in at around 660g, it stands out for its robustness and advanced features. Its 3.68 million-dot OLED viewfinder and 1.62 million-dot steerable touchscreen provide a comfortable viewing experience. It has two UHS-II SD slots, ideal for smooth shooting, and can capture 4K DCI footage while offering an extended ISO range of 160 to 51,200. However, unlike the GH5, it doesn't have built-in image stabilisation.

Compared to its predecessor, the GH5S sacrifices sensor resolution (10.2 MP vs. 20 MP) for better high-sensitivity performance. It relies on a contrast-detection autofocus system coupled with DFD technology, which has its limitations when compared to the more advanced solutions found on newer models such as the GH5 II, GH6 or GH7. In terms of speed, the 12 fps burst rate is still acceptable for a camera of this generation, but it falls short of current standards.

Despite its age, the GH5S remains a benchmark for videographers looking for a compact, high-performance camera. Its advanced video features (built-in V-Log, 4K DCI recording, extensive connectivity) and tropical design make it a relevant choice for professionals equipped with external stabilisers. Although the GH5S is beginning to be superseded by its successors, it remains relevant for certain applications.
