In September 2020, Panasonic expanded its full-frame product line with the introduction of the Lumix S5, a groundbreaking camera. The successor to the S1/S1R/S1H line, the brand's L-mount pioneer, this camera is notable for its compactness (714g) and resistance to the elements. Launched in January 2018, the Panasonic GH5S is a micro 4/3 hybrid camera with a 10.2 MP sensor designed specifically for videographers. Weighing in at around 660g, it stands out for its robustness and advanced features. Its 3.68 million-dot OLED viewfinder and 1.62 million-dot steerable touchscreen provide a comfortable viewing experience. It has two UHS-II SD slots, ideal for smooth shooting, and can capture 4K DCI footage while offering an extended ISO range of 160 to 51,200. However, unlike the GH5, it doesn't have built-in image stabilisation.

Compared to its predecessor, the GH5S sacrifices sensor resolution (10.2 MP vs. 20 MP) for better high-sensitivity performance. It relies on a contrast-detection autofocus system coupled with DFD technology, which has its limitations when compared to the more advanced solutions found on newer models such as the GH5 II, GH6 or GH7. In terms of speed, the 12 fps burst rate is still acceptable for a camera of this generation, but it falls short of current standards.

Despite its age, the GH5S remains a benchmark for videographers looking for a compact, high-performance camera. Its advanced video features (built-in V-Log, 4K DCI recording, extensive connectivity) and tropical design make it a relevant choice for professionals equipped with external stabilisers. Although the GH5S is beginning to be superseded by its successors, it remains relevant for certain applications.
