Sony A7 III vs A7S II

The Sony Alpha 7 III, released in February 2018, is a 24.2-megapixel full-format mirrorless camera. In selecting this model for my switch to mirrorless cameras, I chose it as a benchmark due to its exceptional image quality in both photo and video. The camera features a back-illuminated sensor and BIONZ X processor, enabling 4K UHD recording at 30 fps (with slight cropping) and Full HD recording at 120 fps. The ISO sensitivity extends to 51,200, extendable to 204,800, offering outstanding low-light performance.

The Alpha 7 III features integrated 5-axis stabilization, protection against the effects of temperature and humidity, and an enhanced battery life, thanks to the NP-FZ100 battery. It also offers two SD card slots (one UHS-II and one UHS-I) and full connectivity, including a USB-C port. The camera's 10 fps burst rate and buffer capacity of up to 40 RAW images or 177 JPEG images ensures optimal responsiveness. The camera features a 693-point hybrid autofocus system that covers 93% of the sensor, along with an Eye-AF function for precise eye tracking, ideal for portrait photography. Furthermore, the silent burst shutter allows for discreet and efficient photography.

Designed for intermediate and expert photographers, this camera offers excellent ergonomics, with a 2.36 million-dot OLED viewfinder and tilting touchscreen. Although now superseded by the more recent and more expensive Alpha 7 IV, the a7 III remains a sound investment with unbeatable value for money. Overall, the Sony Alpha 7 III continues to be a popular choice due to its versatile performance and durability.

The Sony A7S II, launched in October 2015, features a 12.2-megapixel full-frame sensor and is designed for professionals in video and low-light photography. Despite its age, this model remains highly regarded for its high sensitivity and ability to shoot in 4K UHD at 30 fps and 1080p up to 120 fps.

The A7S II is equipped with a BIONZ X processor and uses an older generation of NP-FW50 batteries, supporting SD UHS-II and CF Express Type A cards. While the viewfinder and screen resolution are in line with industry standards at the time of its release, the camera offers a highly satisfying experience with 5-axis stabilization and advanced video features, including S-Log3 for greater image dynamics.

However, due to the rapid evolution of technology and cameras, the A7S II is no longer a particularly recommended option for new purchases (it is unlikely that you will be able to find one anyway). For those seeking enhanced performance and more contemporary features, the Sony A7S III, launched in August 2020, is a superior alternative. The A7S III outperforms its predecessor in every aspect, offering superior resolution, optimized light and color management, and a more robust battery life, making it well-suited to the current demands of professional photography and video.
