I’m back with a new article about Guadeloupe! We’ve now been living on Basse‑Terre—the southern wing of Guadeloupe’s butterfly shape—for four years. It’s wilder, greener, and pleasantly removed from the busiest tourist areas (which we love!). As you know, we enjoy hiking as a family, and living in Basse‑Terre puts us close to the starting points for some beautiful trails, including the hike up La Soufrière. Why choose Basse‑Terre for your stay?
As I mentioned, Basse‑Terre feels wilder and more authentic than Grande‑Terre. You’ll generally be farther from the tourist crowds, with a choice of lovely hotels and ecolodges, as well as natural beaches that tend to be less busy. You’ll also be close to the famous La Soufrière volcano, along with numerous hiking trails and waterfalls deep in the rainforest. The well‑marked paths reveal plenty of surprises along the way: clear rivers, natural pools, sweeping viewpoints, and more. So, if hiking is one of the main reasons you’re coming to Guadeloupe, Basse‑Terre is where you’ll want to be.
Beach lovers are well catered to as well, with both black‑sand and golden‑sand shores. One of our favorite family spots is Grande Anse in Trois‑Rivières. Its black sand creates a striking contrast with the color of the water, and best of all, it rarely feels crowded, even when we visit as a family on weekends.

The best places to stay in Basse‑Terre, Guadeloupe
Now that you know a little more about Basse‑Terre, let’s look at some of the best areas to base yourself:
- Bouillante: if you want to be by the sea and close to natural hot springs, I’d say this is Basse‑Terre’s top spot! Plus, you’ll be right next to Îlet Pigeon and the famous Cousteau Reserve.
- Saint‑Claude: if you’re more into nature and mountains, I recommend Saint‑Claude. It’s the ideal starting point to climb La Soufrière and visit the Carbet Falls. On site, the vibe is peaceful—you’ll feel great!
- Sainte‑Rose: the scenery changes completely as you move closer to the mangroves and the Grand Cul‑de‑Sac Marin (a magnificent turquoise‑blue lagoon). You’ll be surrounded by scenery that feels straight out of a postcard!
- Deshaies: at the northern tip of Basse‑Terre, you’ll be close to stunning beaches like Grande Anse. It’s also a good base for exploring the west coast. However, it’s not always a quiet place, so it’s up to you!

High-end hotels in Basse‑Terre
A more luxurious stay is entirely possible in Basse‑Terre, with several high‑end properties worth considering. Many combine attentive service with a memorable setting, whether by the sea, surrounded by tropical vegetation, or overlooking La Soufrière.
Habitation Saint Charles – Hôtel de Charme & Spa
In the heart of Basse‑Terre, Habitation Saint Charles – Hôtel de Charme & Spa is an attractive 4‑star hotel set in peaceful surroundings. Facilities include an outdoor pool, a spa, a gym, well‑regarded restaurants serving local cuisine, and even bungalows with modern kitchens for guests who prefer a little more independence.
The warm welcome is another highlight, with staff paying close attention to the details that make a stay more enjoyable. Guests often mention the generous breakfast and the massages in particular, making this a lovely place to slow down and make the most of the hotel’s facilities. It’s also conveniently located about 14 km from Pointe‑à‑Pitre Airport and makes a practical base for exploring nearby waterfalls and hiking trails. All in all, this high‑end hotel has plenty to recommend it.
Le Gaetana Hotel
Set in the hills above Sainte‑Rose, this luxury hotel combines peaceful surroundings with a beautiful setting. The sea views are magnificent—just imagine waking up to them each morning! The accommodations are all suites, with several options designed for 2 to 6 guests. The suites are huge: one even measures 162 m². Even when traveling as a group, you certainly won’t be short on space. All of the suites are tastefully decorated, and some include a kitchen, a spacious terrace, lovely views, and access to an infinity pool.
Another advantage is the location: you’ll be very close to downtown Sainte‑Rose and the beaches, yet in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle. It’s easy to see why Le Gaetana Hotel is so tempting!
Tropicana Suites
Next, we’re heading to Deshaies, near Anse du Petit Bas Vent and Grand Bas Vent beaches, for Tropicana Suites. This time it’s a 4‑star aparthotel with great amenities. It combines comfort, independence, and a tropical décor. The apartments offered can host 1 to 5 people, depending on the size of your group and the option you choose. In any case, they are air‑conditioned and have a kitchen and private bathroom. Some also come with a terrace and a private pool—two welcome extras.
As you’d expect, you’ll be in a stunning setting right in the middle of nature. On‑site, there’s a bistro serving tasty local dishes. It’s a good opportunity to sample a few local specialties. In short, if you’re looking for a quiet place to discover the region independently, this is certainly one to consider.
Hôtel - Résidence Habitation Grande Anse
We’re staying in Deshaies, this time just a few steps from Grande Anse beach. This charming property is surrounded by tropical vegetation. What stands out most is the peaceful setting and warm atmosphere. Several types of accommodation are available: studios, suites, and apartments. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a kitchenette, a sleeping area or bedroom, very often with a sea view. You’ll also have access to a beautiful garden and an outdoor pool.
A good breakfast is available, while for other meals there’s the “Le Papillon” restaurant right next door. However, it only opens from mid‑October to May. Between the quality of service, the calm of the place, and the comfort of the accommodation, Hôtel‑Résidence Habitation Grande Anse is a great option in Basse‑Terre!
Résidence Paradis Tropical
Set in the hills above the town of Basse‑Terre, Résidence Paradis Tropical certainly lives up to its name. The property offers small lodges with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and the mountains. They are mainly designed for two guests, and each is self‑contained and well equipped, with a kitchen, balcony, and air conditioning.
There’s also a tropical garden, two pools with views, a relaxed atmosphere, and very friendly hosts. In terms of location, you’re at the far south of Basse‑Terre and close to everything. You’ll be close to Saint‑Claude (and therefore La Soufrière), the waterfalls, and the southern Basse‑Terre beaches. In my view, it’s a great option for discovering the authentic side of Guadeloupe while enjoying a calm, family‑friendly vibe.
Hôtel Lune de Miel
Located less than 1 km from Grande Anse beach, Hôtel Lune de Miel invites you to enjoy a high‑end stay. As the name suggests, the experience is primarily designed for couples. The property offers several suites that feel more like small private villas. Some even have a private heated pool. Each one includes a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room, and a beautiful terrace overlooking greenery. The contemporary, elegant decor is in keeping with the hotel’s overall standard.
Philippe, the owner, is known for being available and happy to share useful local tips. Food lovers can also enjoy a generous breakfast and a very good on‑site restaurant. For me, it has everything you need for a getaway that combines comfort and privacy.

From the moment you arrive, the calm, authentic atmosphere sets the tone, while the infinity pool offers a remarkable view toward Les Saintes. You’ll have a choice between rooms, suites, or bungalows for 2 to 3 people. They’re tastefully decorated, with wood used throughout. Facilities include a beautiful pool and the well‑regarded Panga restaurant.
Not to mention that this hotel is very well located: near La Soufrière, hot springs, and the southern beaches. It’s also a great starting point for excursions to Les Saintes! All in all, this is a charming hotel in Basse‑Terre. If you’re interested, I suggest booking well in advance!
Hôtel Saint-Georges
Next, we move closer to La Soufrière, to Hôtel Saint‑Georges in Saint‑Claude. This 3-star establishment offers good comfort to explore Basse-Terre at your own pace. To give you a better sense of the location, the volcano is only a short drive away. If you’re particularly fond of hikes, go for it!
The hotel itself has a lovely pool, a spa, and comfortable air‑conditioned rooms. In fact, some rooms even offer a mountain view. As you’ve probably gathered, if you want to be close to hikes and nature while enjoying quality services, this hotel is a very good option to keep in mind!
Habitation du Comté
In Sainte-Rose, this charming hotel welcomes you for a lovely getaway in Guadeloupe. For context, Habitation du Comté is a colonial house that has been completely transformed into a hotel surrounded by a tropical garden. Today, old and new sit side by side, which is a big part of its charm.
The rooms are quite spacious and well-equipped, with terraces and all the essentials for a comfortable stay (some even have a terrace with a garden view). You can also enjoy an outdoor pool, a large terrace, and a bar (perfect for an evening drink in a nice setting). As you might guess, the atmosphere on site is all about relaxation. You’ll even be warmly welcomed with a welcome punch—a friendly touch that sets the tone from the moment you arrive. Even though you’re not right on the beach, you’ll be less than 2 km from some beaches while still being close to hikes and hot springs. In my opinion, it’s an authentic hotel that should please you if it fits what you’re looking for!
Les Gîtes de la Lézarde
If you’re coming to Basse‑Terre to switch off, Les Gîtes de la Lézarde should interest you! Plus, they’re right in the heart of Guadeloupe’s national park, in Petit-Bourg. They’re also very close to the famous Saut de la Lézarde waterfall. This 3‑star property has a warm, family‑friendly atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease.
You’ll have a choice between several rooms with private bathrooms, terraces, and dining areas. You can also unwind in the spa, jacuzzi, or outdoor pool! You’ll feel like you’re in a cocoon, with a small restaurant serving local cuisine. All in all, it’s a simple, authentic little gem. You know, it’s the kind of place that’s hard to leave at the end of your vacation.
Le Bougainvillier Blanc
Between tropical forest and the Caribbean Sea, Le Bougainvillier Blanc is worth a visit! It offers wooden bungalows open to the greenery—a true little haven of peace. They’re comfortable, with a kitchen, a balcony, some even directly overlooking the sea. Even the photos make it look inviting. Guests consistently praise the warm welcome from Lucien and the tranquility of the place. Not to mention the outdoor pool surrounded by greenery. Another plus: pets are welcome.
To give you a better idea, you’ll be very close to Saut d’Acomat and Marigot Beach—both well worth visiting. With its excellent value for money, family atmosphere, and setting, I think you’ll have great memories of this accommodation!

Nestled in lush surroundings in the hills above Pointe‑Noire, TropicAngel Écolodge feels wonderfully secluded. This 4‑star property combines an eco‑friendly concept with an intimate atmosphere, making it easy to switch off completely. The wooden lodges are spacious, nicely decorated, and include a fully equipped kitchen, a terrace overlooking the sea or the mountains, and sometimes a hot tub.
When it comes to facilities, you’ll have access to a lush garden, an infinity pool, and a spa! Travelers also appreciate the team’s warm welcome, which adds a personal touch to the stay—a real plus in my book. Just over 2 km from Marigot Beach, this ecolodge is perfect for a getaway of a few days or more.
We were lucky enough to spend a night in this superb ecolodge in Pointe-Noire, and we highly recommend it!
Au Jardin des colibris
A little after we arrived in Guadeloupe (three years ago), we had the chance to spend two nights at Jardin des Colibris in Deshaies! The atmosphere draws you in as soon as you arrive, helped along by the wonderfully friendly host, Floria. You can choose between several types of accommodation: a wooden Creole cabin, a treehouse, or even a villa with a private pool. There’s something to suit a range of preferences. We stayed in the wooden cabin with a mezzanine—the all‑wood decor is beautiful and full of character. Everything is arranged so that you can be completely independent. And the finishing touch was an open‑air shower.
In addition to the lodging, snorkeling gear and children’s games are available to borrow. A good breakfast is prepared for you every morning. For other meals, the ecolodge works with a local caterer—we all thoroughly enjoyed it. On the eco side: there are compost and recycling bins, and no air‑conditioning in the units. Even so, the pool and surrounding greenery help keep things comfortable.
As you can probably tell, we genuinely loved our time there and weren’t ready to leave. In any case, It’s a beautiful place to stay in Basse‑Terre and one we would happily recommend.
Piton Bungalows Ecolodges
Far from the busiest tourist areas, Piton Bungalows Écolodge offers total immersion in Guadeloupean nature. Here, the bungalows are made of red wood, giving them a Creole touch. They’re also independent, fairly spacious, and nicely decorated. Each one also has a terrace open to the outdoors, with a view of either the sea or the mountains—depending on the unit you choose. They come with a fully equipped kitchen and a private bathroom (some even have a jacuzzi, but those go quickly).
Another advantage is that, you’ll be very close to Grande Anse and La Perle beaches—perfect for exploring the north of Basse‑Terre. In terms of services, there’s naturally a heated outdoor pool. All in all, this ecolodge has everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Les Bananes Vertes Ecolodges
In Saint‑Claude, this ecolodge is ideal for a getaway at the foot of La Soufrière. Its peaceful atmosphere and tropical garden make it a lovely place to stay. What’s more, the property is recognized with the official EU Ecolabel for its eco‑friendly concept—a useful point to know.
The accommodations feature Creole decor while being surrounded by vegetation. The setting feels like a private bubble in the heart of nature. Plus, each lodge is fairly well equipped, with a kitchenette, a private bathroom, and a terrace overlooking the garden! You can also enjoy the outdoor pool. Another nice touch is the welcome ti‑punch on arrival. With its facilities, warm welcome, and location, it’s easy to see why Les Bananes Vertes is so popular.
