I’m back with a new article about Guadeloupe! We’ve now been living here for four years, on the island of Basse‑Terre, the southern wing of the butterfly. It’s wilder, more natural, and nicely away from most tourists (and we love that!). As you know, we enjoy going on family hikes. Let me tell you, in Basse‑Terre we’re close to plenty of trailheads for beautiful hikes, like the Soufrière volcano. For all these reasons I decided to put together a complete guide to the best hotels in Basse‑Terre (on the island) in Guadeloupe. When I say “hotels,” I mean it broadly: I’ll also tell you about a few ecolodges, for example. There are more and more of them in Guadeloupe. Staying in Basse‑Terre—and in an ecolodge—is the best way to get off the beaten path!
In short, the aim of this article is to share the best places to stay in Basse‑Terre, Guadeloupe. You’ll see, some of them we’ve tested ourselves (and approved). For others, we’ve had good feedback from friends and family. In this article, we’re sharing our impressions and above all our best tips. So, are you in?
If you’re in the middle of planning your trip to Guadeloupe, I imagine Les Saintes are part of your itinerary. If you’re unsure, I really recommend giving them a few vacation days. By the way, we’ve already written a complete guide to the best accommodations in Les Saintes. It should make organizing easier!
And don’t forget our article on all the things to do in Guadeloupe!
We also have an article on the best seaside hotels in Guadeloupe.
Why choose Basse‑Terre for your stay?
As I was saying, Basse‑Terre is the wilder and more authentic side compared with Grande‑Terre. Here, you’ll generally be farther from the tourist bustle. When it comes to accommodation, there are beautiful hotels, ecolodges, and more natural (uncrowded) beaches. You’ll be right next to the famous Soufrière volcano, as well as other hikes and waterfalls in the heart of the rainforest. Speaking of hiking, there are plenty of well‑marked trails with all sorts of surprises along the way: crystal‑clear rivers, natural pools, breathtaking viewpoints, and more… At least now you know: if you’re coming to Guadeloupe for hiking, you need to head to Basse‑Terre.
If you love beaches, there are some very beautiful ones too, with both black sand and golden sand. We personally love going with the family to Grande Anse (Trois‑Rivières). It’s a black‑sand beach; the contrast with the color of the water is amazing. And above all, it’s rarely crowded: we can go there peacefully with the family on weekends.
I’d say that if you want a getaway to disconnect and hike, Basse‑Terre should be right up your alley! If you’re an adventurer looking for unique experiences, we’ve written a comprehensive article on unusual places to stay in Guadeloupe.
The best places to stay in Basse‑Terre, Guadeloupe
Now that you know a little more about Basse‑Terre, let me show you the best spots to drop your bags. Here are a few:
- Bouillante: if you want to be by the sea and close to natural hot springs, I’d say this is Basse‑Terre’s top spot! Plus, you’ll be right next to Îlet Pigeon and the famous Cousteau Reserve.
- Saint‑Claude: if you’re more into nature and mountains, I recommend Saint‑Claude. It’s the ideal starting point to climb La Soufrière and visit the Carbet Falls. On site, the vibe is peaceful—you’ll feel great!
- Sainte‑Rose: we completely change scenery to get closer to the mangroves and the Grand Cul‑de‑Sac Marin (a magnificent turquoise‑blue lagoon). You’ll clearly be in a postcard setting!
- Deshaies: at the very north of Basse‑Terre, you’ll be close to stunning beaches like Grande Anse. It’s also a good base for exploring the west coast. However, it’s not always a quiet place, so it’s up to you!
All right, I’ll leave it there. I think you already have a good overview of Basse‑Terre’s different areas. What I like is that each place has something very different to offer—it really depends on what you’re after! And of course, you can always switch hotels and locations during your stay to mix things up!
Another point to help you, even if it’s not the most fun: the budget! We’ve written an article to help you estimate your travel budget for Guadeloupe. It should give you a hand!

Now for the serious stuff: discovering the best accommodations in Basse‑Terre. You know me—I always present places so everyone can find what suits them. Basically, there will be something for all tastes and all budgets. Let me know what you think!
High-end hotels in Basse‑Terre
If you want a rather luxurious stay, that’s perfectly possible on Basse‑Terre. There are several high‑end establishments that are well worth it! Very often you’ll find hotels with top‑quality service and, above all, an exceptional setting: facing the sea, in the heart of tropical vegetation, or with a view of La Soufrière.
Habitation Saint Charles - Hôtel de Charme & Spa
Right in the heart of Basse‑Terre, discover this beautiful 4‑star hotel: Habitation Saint Charles – Hôtel de Charme & Spa. You’ll be in a peaceful setting with high‑quality facilities such as an outdoor pool, spa, gym, local restaurants (they have a great reputation—you’ll love them!), and even bungalows with modern kitchens for more independence.
That’s not all! The staff welcome is top‑notch: they pay attention to every detail to give you an exceptional stay. Guests often rave about the hearty breakfast and the massages. It’s really the perfect chance to relax and enjoy all the hotel’s services. To situate you, you’re only 14 km from Pointe‑à‑Pitre Airport, which is pretty handy. Speaking of location, this hotel is a great starting point for discovering nearby waterfalls and hikes! In short, this luxury hotel has plenty going for it—you can’t go wrong!
Le Gaetana Hotel
Located on the heights of Sainte‑Rose, you’ll enjoy a luxury hotel that combines tranquility with a dream setting. You’ll have a magnificent sea view—just imagine the spectacle when you wake up! As for rooms (or rather suites), the hotel offers several with different comfort levels to accommodate 2 to 6 people. The suites are huge: one even measures 162 m². One thing is certain: even if you come with several people, you won’t lack space. To tell you more, all suites are nicely decorated; some are equipped with a kitchen, with beautiful terraces, views, and an infinity pool.
The added bonus: the location. Let me explain: you’ll be very close to downtown Sainte‑Rose and the beaches, yet in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle. Between us, it’s hard not to be tempted by the Gaetana Hotel!
Tropicana Suites
We’re changing settings again to Deshaies, near the Anse du Petit and Grand Bas Vent beaches, with Tropicana Suites. This time it’s a 4‑star aparthotel with great amenities. It combines comfort, independence, and a tropical décor. The apartments offered can host 1 to 5 people, depending on how many you are and which you choose. In any case, they are air‑conditioned and have a kitchen and private bathroom. Some even offer a terrace and a private pool (two real bonuses!).
As you’d expect, you’ll be in a stunning setting right in the middle of nature. On‑site, there’s a bistro serving tasty local dishes. I recommend taking the opportunity to try some specialties! In short, if you’re looking for a quiet place to discover the region independently, you can book here without hesitation!
Hôtel - Résidence Habitation Grande Anse
We’re still in Deshaies—more precisely just a few steps from Grande Anse beach! Here’s a charming property surrounded by tropical vegetation. What we particularly appreciate here is the tranquility, the warm atmosphere, and the setting! You’re offered different types of accommodation: studios, suites, and apartments. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a kitchenette, a sleeping area or bedroom, very often with a sea view. You’ll also have access to a beautiful garden and an outdoor pool.
To delight your taste buds, a good breakfast is offered, while for other meals there’s the “Le Papillon” restaurant right next door. However, it only opens from mid‑October to May. Between the quality of service, the calm of the place, and the comfort of the accommodation, Hôtel‑Résidence Habitation Grande Anse is a great option in Basse‑Terre!

Résidence Paradis Tropical
Located on the heights of the town of Basse‑Terre, Résidence Paradis Tropical truly lives up to its name! On‑site, small lodges are offered with an incredible view of the Caribbean Sea and the mountains! They are primarily designed for 2 people. All are independent and well equipped, with kitchen, balcony, and air conditioning.
Not to mention the tropical garden! You can also enjoy two pools with a view and a relaxing atmosphere with very friendly hosts! In terms of location, you’re at the far south of Basse‑Terre and close to everything. Basically, you’re near Saint‑Claude (and therefore La Soufrière), the waterfalls, and the southern Basse‑Terre beaches. In my opinion, it’s a great deal for discovering the authentic side of Guadeloupe while enjoying a calm, family‑friendly vibe.
Hôtel Lune de Miel
Located less than 1 km from Grande Anse beach, Hôtel Lune de Miel invites you to enjoy a high‑end stay. As you can guess from the name, the experience in this establishment is mainly designed for couples. For accommodation, several suites are offered that feel like mini‑villas. Some even have a private heated pool. In all cases, they include a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room, and a beautiful terrace overlooking greenery. Plus, the decor matches the hotel’s standard: contemporary and elegant.
You’ll be welcomed by Philippe, the owner, who is always available and shares his valuable tips! For food lovers, you can enjoy a generous breakfast and a very good restaurant on site. In my opinion, all conditions are met here for a getaway blending luxury and intimacy!

Unique hotels & ecolodges in Basse‑Terre
For a change and to get off the beaten path, why not take a look at Basse‑Terre’s ecolodges? There are more and more of them, tucked away in tropical vegetation. It’s the perfect way to get close to nature and discover Guadeloupe differently. If that sounds good to you, I’ve picked out a few that really stand out!
TropicAngel ECOLODGE de Charme
Up in the hills above Pointe‑Noire, TropicAngel Écolodge is nestled in a lush setting. This 4‑star property attracts guests with its eco‑friendly concept and intimate atmosphere—it will let you completely disconnect! The wooden lodges are spacious, nicely decorated, and include a fully equipped kitchen, a terrace overlooking the sea or the mountains, and sometimes a hot tub.

On top of that, travelers particularly appreciate the team’s warm welcome, which adds a human touch to the vacation—definitely a plus in my book! Barely 2 km from Marigot Beach, this ecolodge is perfect for a getaway of a few days or more.
We were lucky enough to spend a night in this superb ecolodge in Pointe-Noire, and we highly recommend it!

Au Jardin des colibris
A little after we arrived in Guadeloupe (three years ago), we had the chance to spend two nights at Jardin des Colibris in Deshaies! As soon as you arrive, you’re immersed in the vibe thanks to the host, Floria, who is super friendly. You can choose between several types of accommodation: a wooden Creole cabin, a treehouse, or even a villa with a private pool. You’re bound to find what you’re looking for. We stayed in the wooden cabin with a mezzanine—the decor is really beautiful, all wood and authentic. Everything is set up so you can be 100 % independent. And the icing on the cake: there was an open‑air shower!
In addition to the lodging, you’re lent snorkeling gear and kids’ games. A good breakfast is prepared for you every morning. For other meals, the ecolodge works with a local caterer—I can tell you we all loved it, haha. On the eco side: there are compost and recycling bins, and no air‑conditioning in the units. But between the pool and the surrounding nature, you stay pretty cool.
I think you can tell from these lines: we really loved our time there. We didn’t want to leave, haha. In any case, I can assure you it’s a beautiful place to stay in Basse‑Terre—you can book with complete confidence!
Piton Bungalows Ecolodges
Far from the tourist hustle and bustle, Piton Bungalows Écolodge offers total immersion in Guadeloupean nature. Here, the bungalows are made of red wood, giving them a Creole touch. They’re also independent, fairly spacious, and nicely decorated. What’s more, each one has a terrace open to the outdoors, with a view of either the sea or the mountains—your choice! They come with a fully equipped kitchen and a private bathroom (some even have a jacuzzi, but those go quickly).
As a bonus, you’ll be very close to Grande Anse and La Perle beaches—perfect for exploring the north of Basse‑Terre. In terms of services, there’s naturally a heated outdoor pool. In short, you won’t lack for anything at this ecolodge!
Les Bananes Vertes Ecolodges
In Saint‑Claude, this ecolodge is ideal for a getaway at the foot of La Soufrière. It’s a great spot thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and tropical garden. What’s more, the property is recognized with the official EU Ecolabel for its eco‑friendly concept—a good thing to know!
The accommodations feature Creole decor while being surrounded by vegetation. You feel like you’re in a bubble, right in the midst of nature. Plus, each lodge is fairly well equipped, with a kitchenette, a private bathroom, and a terrace overlooking the garden! You can also enjoy the outdoor pool. Added bonus: you’re welcomed with a ti‑punch to say hello! All in all, with its facilities, welcome, and location, Les Bananes Vertes is a popular ecolodge.
