Whether you are an amateur photographer or a professional, the question of digital photography equipment always comes up. When you start learning photography, you often wonder whether there really is such a thing as the perfect camera. Is there a best choice between a DSLR, a compact camera, or a bridge camera?

The purpose of this page is to help you choose the equipment you need, especially if you are looking to buy a camera or a lens. I only cover these two topics here; for other photography accessories, you can read my dedicated article on camera accessories!

So, what can you expect to find on this page?

Choosing your camera: it may seem like a simple question at first, but the choice is huge. Between the best smartphones, compact cameras, bridge cameras, mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, instant cameras, and of course DSLRs, there is no longer one obvious answer. Which camera should you choose? This is a question many people ask themselves.

The right choice will therefore depend on many factors: what do you want to photograph? Is camera size important to you? Is this your first camera? Do you prefer manual mode or automatic mode? Would you like to shoot video with your camera? Are you looking for something versatile that can do a bit of everything? Do you want to try macro photography? Are you planning to edit your images afterward? Do you want a particularly small camera? Are you looking for a compromise between an expensive model and a cheaper entry-level option? Do you want to shoot adventure photos, street photos, or night photos? I’ll stop there, but you get the idea! It is obviously difficult to answer all those questions and simply say, “Take this one, it’s great.”

I have already started writing about the difference between a full-frame camera and an APS-C sensor, and I will come back to this in more detail another time. I will also look at other issues that can affect your camera, such as dust, moisture, maintenance, and more.

Camera lenses: Just like choosing a digital camera, choosing the right lens is not always easy. Different lenses have different qualities and uses, and they do not all offer the same advantages. Some are clearly better than others, for example.

This is the topic I will spend the most time on throughout this page, with the aim of helping you choose, for example, a telephoto lens, a macro lens, or a wide-angle lens. I will also explain the difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens, which lens to choose for landscape photography, how to take pictures with a wide-angle lens, which focal length to use in different situations, the benefits of stabilization on a 200mm or 300mm lens, and more.

Finally, to fully understand both topics, I also suggest reading my page on the basics of photography, which explains concepts such as depth of field, how the diaphragm works, aperture, autofocus, framing, shutter speed, and more. All of these are directly related to either lenses or cameras.
